Book excerpt: Despite all of the information that exists to encourage students to attend and do well in college, this is the first research-based guide that directly advises first- and second-year college students. With a focus on the needs and interests of students who are underrepresented in the academy (African American, Latinx, low-income, and first-generation students), this book will help all students take full advantage of the academic resources that the university setting has to offer. The authors introduce students to different types of research across the disciplines, showing them how to work with professors to build a course of study, how to integrate research work into coursework, and how to write and present research. This timely volume will also assist faculty, staff, and parents in providing the needed tools to promote student success. Book Features: Prepares students for the transition from high school to college with a focus on writing, time management, and research skills.Addresses the challenges that face high-achieving, underrepresented students.Empowers students to seek out resources and research opportunities to achieve their full academic potential.Includes models, approaches, student voices, and vignettes from the authors’ successful undergraduate research program. “A must read for every college student. This practical guide provides a roadmap for success as a researcher, a scholar, and a learner.” —Tia Brown McNair, Association of American Colleges & Universities “Faculty mentors and administrative leaders who aspire to be effective sponsors and supporters of students from diverse backgrounds should definitely acquire this resource.” —Elizabeth L. Ambos, Council on Undergraduate Research “What I love about this book is the broader, humanistic conversation about how pursuing research becomes a window into how one becomes a supremely informed and critical citizen.” —Armando Bengochea, director, Mellon-Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program

Book excerpt: Although many articles and books have been written about conducting research with undergraduates, there is a dearth of research on the process of publishing with undergraduates. Thus, in this research topic, we assembled a collection of 43 articles from 98 researchers worldwide who are passionate about—and have had success in—publishing high quality peer-reviewed journal articles with undergraduates. The diverse articles represent a wide range of practices to help researchers publish with undergraduates, including structuring the curriculum to promote undergraduate research and publication, optimizing research experiences for undergraduates, training students in implementing advanced techniques, accessing special populations, or conducting research in off-campus settings, addressing institutional and career challenges for faculty, and increasing inclusion and diversity. Each article provides a unique and diverse perspective that nevertheless resonates across contexts and situations. We hope that the ideas, models, techniques, and practices in these articles will motivate and inspire readers to begin, continue, or rethink how they engage undergraduates in publishable research; we also hope to stimulate empirical and quantitative research on the effectiveness of these ideas, models, techniques, and practices.

Book excerpt: This yearbook is a project of the Consortium for Educational Development, Evaluation and Research (CEDER), the research and development arm of the College of Education and Human Development at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. With this edition of the CEDER Yearbook, the editors wished to support student researchers as emerging scholars. Participating in research projects entails many benefits for students, including the onboarding of new teaching methods and strategies, becoming a reflective practitioner, engaging in a different model of professional learning, learning how to behave like a researcher, improving writing skills, and pursuing further degrees. Collaboration between faculty members and students (often teacher or pre-service teacher researchers) is critical (Brew, 2013; Johnson, 2000; Ries, 2018).Strickland (1988) posits that teacher researchers need to be engaged in every step of the research process and allowed to take ownership of the work. It should be thought of as helping to create lifelong researchers, for "if students are properly trained, prepared, and supervised, the student-faculty collaboration can be a memorable and successful experience. It may even inspire the career goal of a future professor or two" (Fenn, 2010, p. 259). The call for proposals asked for empirical, conceptual and theoretical contributions to the area of research conducted by students. Personal Perspectives and Research Focus of students include the following categories: Culture, International Students, Men of Color, Teaching, Doctoral Students, Latino/a Culture, STEM, LBGTQ, Policy and Administration, Student Faculty, and Curriculum. The intended audience for this yearbook includes educators, decision-makers, policymakers, and leaders within faculty and student development programs as well as international student departments. A call for proposals was issued to a variety of universities and professional organizations. Two hundred and sixty-four articles from a total of 217 authors representing 72 universities were submitted. Those blinded articles were distributed to a panel of reviewers. Each article was seen by two reviewers and the editors of the yearbook. The editorial team selected 21 articles for inclusion in this yearbook.

This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Co-published with and With the growing interest in undergraduate research as a high-impact practice, and the recognition that college education is increasingly moving online, this book – the first to do so – provides a framework, guidance from pioneering practitioners, and a range of examples across disciplines on how to engage remote students in research. Two foundational chapters set the scene. For those new to incorporating undergraduate research in their courses, the opening chapter provides an introduction to its evolution and practice, and reviews the evidence of its benefits for students, faculty, and institutions. The second addresses the benefit that undergraduate research can bring to online learning and provides an overview of the ways research can be incorporated into online and virtual courses to meet the course and student learning objectives. The remaining chapters illustrate implementation of undergraduate research in courses across many disciplines. They address thematic issues related to the work and its effects on students, such as transitioning them from users of, to active participants in, research; and consideration of the technological tools needed to support students in a virtual environment. The contributors, some of whom have been implementing these practices for some years, offer important insights and expertise. While the examples range across the behavioral sciences, business, education, the health professions, the humanities, social sciences, and STEM, readers will find much of value and inspiration from reading the chapters beyond their disciplines.
