Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faculty in five social science disciplines in four-year predominantly black colleges and universities were surveyed. Members of the sample of 1,168 faculty from 82 primarily southern institutions had advanced degrees in one of the following disciplines: economics, education, political science, psychology, or sociology. Attention was directed to their personal goals in undergraduate education, their perception of their institutions' objectives, their professional activities, ethnic background, and other demographic information. Findings include the following: most of the respondents were black; there were considerably more male than female respondents; most of the respondents were full-time faculty who held doctorates; the principal activity for most of the respondents was teaching; slightly more than half of all the respondents had published at least one article; respondents indicated that instilling the ability to think clearly was their most important personal teaching goal; respondents perceived preparing students for employment after college as the most important institutional goal, while research was perceived as the least important institutional goal. Appendices include: a list of institutions represented by faculty respondents; the study questionnaire; and results of 14 surveys of predominantly black institutions. (SW)

Book excerpt: Enrollment management structures, models, and activities have been embraced by many colleges and universities as an institutional practice. Some institutions, however, experience challenges to implementation because of a lack of human and financial resources, campus understanding and awareness. For minority serving institutions, particularly a number of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), this is the case. Shifts in student populations, policy, internal and external challenges exist. These challenges are evident at the HBCU (called Truth University in this document) where the current study was conducted. First, leadership at the HBCU questioned whether the financial investment was worth onboarding enrollment management. Second, there has been unstable leadership which impeded the critical decision making process necessary to support enrollment management. Finally, there was a question of whether enrollment management practices were an affordable and feasible option at Truth University with low enrollment numbers and constant staff turnover. This study examined faculty and administrators' perceptions of enrollment management practices at this Historically Black College and University on the East Coast. Purposeful sampling of a cross section of 124 faculty and administrators employed at the institution with direct and indirect influence on enrollment management was used. Data were collected on the various enrollment components including: marketing, recruitment, academic advising, career services, academic support, institutional research, orientation, and financial aid, retention, and student services. Survey questions sought responses to the existence, effectiveness and the importance of 54 individual enrollment management components at the institution. Additional data were collected on two additional questions regarding the perceived existing enrollment management structure at the institution and the perceived enrollment management structure most important to effective enrollment management implementation at the institution. With only a few exceptions, faculty and administrators exhibited an overall lack of awareness of enrollment management practices at Truth University. To the extent that they are aware of what practices exist at Truth, they generally feel that the activities are not effective. However, the respondents acknowledge the importance of enrollment components. Interestingly, there were few differences between the faculty and the administrators in these perceptions. The implications of these results for Truth University were discussed in light of these findings.

Are black colleges necessary?Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are at the same time the least studied and the least understood institutions of higher education and the most maligned and the most endangered.This unique study examines the mission of four-year HBCUs from the perspective of the campus president, as a foundation for understanding the relevance and role of these institutions. This is the first research to focus on the role of presidents of black colleges; is based on extensive interviews with fifteen presidents; and takes into particular account the type of campus environments in which they operate.Unlike community colleges, women’s colleges, men’s colleges, and Hispanic-serving colleges, Black colleges are racially identifiable institutions. They also vary significantly in, among other characteristics: size, control (public or private), religious affiliation, gender composition, and available resources. Although united in the historic mission of educating African Americans, each black college or university has its own identity and set of educational objectives. The book examines how presidents define and implement mission in the context of their campuses, view the challenges they face, and confront the factors that promote or hinder implementation of their missions.
