Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceived effectiveness of the leadership styles of music department chairs and the responses to the leadership styles by faculty. This study specifically investigated the leadership styles of music department chairs serving in public higher education institutions with NASM accredited music units in the states of Arkansas and Mississippi. The study examined the perceived types of leadership styles used by music department chairs and their relationship with music faculties' self-reported productivity as seen by faculty members within the department. The need for this study is to assist universities in recruiting and developing effective leaders as department chairs. This study used a descriptive correlation design. The data for this study were collected using the survey research approach to examine the perception of the leadership styles by faculty and the effect that style has on music faculty's self-reported productivity. The sample for this study consisted of one hundred and seventy-four (174) faculty members with non-administrative titles and full-time position appointment as senior professors and junior professors. Results from the summary of responses were presented in frequency counts and percentages among the ranks to describe the data. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) was analyzed using chi-square to determine if there were significant differences among the groups. The Spearman rho was used to determine if there was a relationship with music faculty perception of the chair's leadership and self-reported of productivity. Based upon the findings from the MLQ, senior and junior faculty was satisfied with the chair's leadership. In the chi- square findings, the analysis revealed that a significant difference was only found in two subscales, subscales one and eleven. The two subscales are Subscale One "Transformational: Idealized Influence" and Subscale Eleven "Outcomes of Leadership: Effeteness". The Spearman rho revealed that the there is a relationship with the chairs leadership and self-report of productivity from music faculty.

Book excerpt: With department chairs providing a critical link between faculty and administration, their leadership impacts universities on a broad level. However, chairs often report dissatisfaction with the position and experience rapid turnover. In an effort to help understand the role that communication plays in effective leadership for department chairs, this study provides an empirical test of Gibb's theory of defensive vs. supportive communication. As such, this project investigated the communication and leadership behaviors of university department chairs as evaluated by their faculty members. Specifically, 202 randomly selected faculty members from colleges and universities affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges, Washington, D.C., comprise the sample. Respondents completed a multi-page survey assessing supportive and defensive communication, Bureaucratic, Machiavellian, and Transformational leadership behaviors of their department chair, and in addition, faculty members evaluated perceived chair effectiveness, their own relational and job satisfaction, as well as organizational commitment. T-tests revealed that more effective chairs utilized all six supportive communication behaviors more and five of six defensive behaviors less than their more negatively evaluated peers. Furthermore, multiple regression procedures explained 53% of the variance in perceived chair effectiveness showing that the supportive behaviors of problem orientation and description and the defensive behaviors of strategy and control were the most powerful predictors. Secondly, a series of regression procedures were used to explore the three types of leadership included in this study; communication behaviors explained 17% of the variance in bureaucracy scores, 69% of the variance in Machiavellianism, and 62% of the variance in Transformational leadership. Lastly, the study explored faculty job satisfaction and commitment using regression models; communication behaviors explained 56% of the variance in faculty job satisfaction and 41% of the variance in organizational commitment. Based on the findings of this study four implications are discussed. The first implication is that communication does indeed matter. The second implication gleaned from this study is that leadership is a communication phenomenon. The third implication discusses the need for policy implementation of training for department chairs. Finally, it is recommended that Gibb's original instrument be utilized in more empirical research to continue to test his concepts validity.

Book excerpt: Community colleges have become increasingly reliant on adjunct faculty members to deliver content to their students. The impact adjunct faculty members have on the success of community college students is profound. Researchers found students taught by part-time faculty had less favorable outcomes in terms of persistence, completion, and transfer. Improvement of working conditions for community college adjunct faculty is imperative, as student success may be contingent on these improvements. Researchers have found job satisfaction to be related to performance, effectiveness, and other outcomes. Presumably, adjunct faculty members who are more satisfied with their jobs will have higher performance outcomes. Thus, understanding the level of job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles thereof can have a lasting impact on the success of students. There is a gap in the literature on job satisfaction and the role of leadership styles on job satisfaction of community adjunct faculty. The purpose of this explanatory sequential mixed methods study was to examine the relationship between the leadership style employed by the academic team leader and the job satisfaction of community college adjunct faculty members.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to explore the leadership of community college department chairs and the job satisfaction of the faculty in community colleges. There appears to be a leadership crisis in higher education that has resulted from the complexity of the leaders' roles. The goal of this study was to investigate the leadership style of the department chairs in one community college and to research the satisfaction levels of the faculty at the community college to determine if indeed the leaders who demonstrate the characteristics of transformational leadership have followers who are more satisfied with their job. Leadership style surveys were distributed to each department chair and each faculty member on the campus and job satisfaction surveys will be distributed to each faculty member. Eight two-tailed, null hypotheses were tested at the .05 level of significance, addressing the eight research questions of the study. The Pearson correlation, two-sample t test, and ANOVA tests were used. There were non-significant correlations and outcomes that suggested directional propensities or tendencies among the variables. Although the literature indicated that higher order leadership skills such as transformational leadership should have been associated with greater job satisfaction among leaders and workers, the findings of this study did not confirm and even implied a possible reversal of the notion that transformational leadership led to greater job satisfaction. The relationship determined between leadership style and effectiveness of department chairs in a community college setting and faculty job satisfaction were an anomaly in this situation when contrasted to previous studies for other types of institutions. Faculty job satisfaction in this instance was not enhanced by department chairs practicing transformational leadership styles in the community college setting.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the leadership characteristics of respiratory care program directors and determine the relationship between the director's leadership style, effectiveness, faculty satisfaction, extra effort, and program outcomes. Differences between the directors' perceived leadership style and faculties' perception of the directors' leadership style were also examined. Directors' leadership styles were measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ). Director, faculty and program information was measured with a researcher-designed questionnaire. CoARC accredited program directors (n=321) and their full and part-time faculty (n=172) received an e-mail and a web link to obtain demographic information. All participants received an e-mail from Mind Garden, Inc. with a web link to complete the MLQ. Regression analysis and t tests were used to analyze the data. The results found a significant relationship between faculty satisfaction, extra effort, and perceived director effectiveness and each of the predictors transformational, transactional, and passive/avoidant leadership behaviors. There was no relationship between program director leadership style and program outcomes. This study found no difference between the directors' and the faculty's perception of the directors' transformational and transactional leadership behaviors. However, there was a significant difference between the directors' and the faculties' perception of the directors' passive/avoidant behavior.
