Book excerpt: This quantitative study investigated the perceptions of higher education faculty with respect to their behavioral intentions to use learning management systems and the perceived effect of COVID-19 on those intentions. An online survey was administered through private Facebook groups to faculty in higher education and listservs focused on technology in higher education. The sample size initially included 137 participants but participants were reduced to 121 due to incomplete responses on some surveys or not meeting the selection criteria for the research. The theoretical framework for this research was the intersection of the technology acceptance model and digital transformations. The data were analyzed using SPSS AMOS software to develop a structural equation model based on the technology acceptance model with the additional construct of the perceived effect of COVID-19 protocols. The results confirmed that the hypothesized model was a good fit and that COVID-19 had an effect on faculty members’ perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude toward use of learning management systems. The results also confirmed high behavioral intentions to use learning management systems in the future. Key findings of this research included a shift in the technology acceptance model’s mediating variable that impacted the focus of professional development programs and the potential acceptance of learning management systems by higher education faculty in the foreseeable future. Book excerpt: The question of whether particular aspects of pre-service business education programs can be effectively delivered using traditional and distance methods of course delivery was examined by investigating faculty attitudes and perceptions. The faculty members selected for this study was the entire population of faculty that have registered programs at their institutions with the National Association for Business Teacher Education (NABTE), which is a branch of the National Business Education Association (NBEA). This research study was a quantitative, survey design using a questionnaire that was developed to measure the degree to which faculty perceive the effectiveness of traditional and distance courses delivery methods when educating pre-service business education students. Prior to distribution of the questionnaire, a pilot study was conducted to ensure internal validity and instrument reliability. The following research questions guided this study: When teaching pre-service business education curriculum using traditional and distance course delivery methods, how effectively do faculty feel that ... (a) students can be taught the skills necessary for them to demonstrate proficiency of the key points of the ten national business standards? (b) commonly practiced assessment techniques can be implemented to measure student proficiency in the pre-service business teacher education curriculum? and (c) each of the eight courses commonly found in the pre-service business teacher education curriculum are able to be delivered? The purpose of this study is to investigate faculty attitudes and perceptions of how course delivery methods (traditional and distance) can help to effectively prepare qualified teachers in pre-service business education programs. The overarching, conceptual framework of this study is based on the theoretical underpinnings originated by Ajzen and Fishbein called the theory of reasoned action (1975; 1980), which later was refined and renamed as the theory of planned behavior (1988). Ajzen and Fishbein's theory asserts that a person who believes that performing a behavior will lead to positive outcomes will hold a favorable attitude toward performing that behavior, while a person who believes that performing a behavior will lead to negative outcomes will hold an unfavorable attitude. It is believed that this study is grounded in this theory, which helps to explain and understand why some faculty members may or may not accept or adopt teaching a distance course, especially if they have a choice. After analyzing the findings, it was undoubtedly discovered that the faculty perceive traditional courses as the most effective method of course delivery for all questions asked. Further, it was interesting to discover that although the faculty agreed strongly that traditional course methods were most effective, they also indicated that almost all of the key points of the standards, implementation of assessments, and commonly found courses were able to be delivered through distance course delivery methods. These findings add and contribute to the existing literature and should assist other faculty, chairs of departments, as well as academic affairs administrators (i.e. deans and provosts) when making decisions whether particular courses should be taught traditionally or through distance, as well as understanding how other faculty feel when considering the delivery and implementation of commonly practiced assessments and key points of teacher education standards through these two methods of course delivery.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if reasonable and reliable models of faculty engagements with an LMS could be constructed, and to determine how attitudes and perceptions of the technology might be reflected in those engagements. The study grew from a desire to understand which LMS components faculty found most and least helpful, how faculty used those components to teach and communicate, and why they used them. A model was developed to aid in understanding how faculty engage with LMS. In order to construct the model, several multiple data sources were used that provided information on tool usage, course design, and attitudes toward/perceptions of an LMS. The model chosen was based upon Jerome Bruner's (1965) amplification systems, which he introduced at the Seventy-Third Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association. The model, once constructed, demonstrated how the system amplified the process of teaching, how the instructor was trained to use the system and how the instructor "plugged into" the system. The findings revealed that a usable model of faculty engagement with the technology was possible. It was determined from the model that study participants taught online according to more traditional approaches, that they were trained in a variety of ways to use the system, that they tended to use file manipulation and asynchronous communication tools more than others and that content delivery, course administration and steady, albeit not constant, contact with the students was considered important. Further research is necessary in order to model faculty and student interactions within courses, and in order to help modify or construct a good working theory of teaching and learning online, via an LMS.

Other interest included faculty development in distance learning. The population for this study was faculty members from three Maryland community colleges, one rural, one suburban and one urban. This descriptive study utilized both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey instrument and semi-structured interviews were used as a means for collecting data. The survey and interview data were used to compare perceptions among varying levels of faculty based on age, gender, educational level, and years of service. The findings provided insight into faculty views about distance learning training at their own institutions. The research study was designed utilizing Gaff's (1975) conceptual framework for staff development in education, which included motivational and attitudinal variables that affected faculty effectiveness. Attitude theory as discussed by several theorists including Eagly, Chaiken, Rokeach, and Maultsby, were theoretical perspectives used to explain and interpret the fact that attitudes made actions as well as ideas instantly feel right or wrong without conscious analysis. The major finding from this study suggested that male faculty had more positive attitudes toward distance learning than female faculty. The three key factors for faculty participation in distance learning were found to be training, extra pay and extra time. Implications for faculty development were identified as a result of the study's findings. -- Abstract.
