Book excerpt: This is the second book by Mrs. Inskeep that breaks new ground with respect to the estimated 200,000 poor and abandoned orphaned children who were shipped from New York City orphanages to western families for adoption between 1853 and 1929. These children were placed primarily by the New York Foundling Hospital (NYFH) and the Children's Aid Society (CAS) and are now referred to as "Orphan Train Riders." Information as to the identities of a large number of these children has been preserved in federal and state censuses taken between 1855 and 1925, as well as in the 1890 New York City Police Census, and represents a potential boon to the descendants of these foundlings. This book, the sequel to Mars. Inskeep's 1995 work on the orphans from the New York Foundling Hospital, treats the residents of the Children's Aid Society.

Since that time the number has increased. In the Eleventh Ward, Mr. Squiers, Captain of the Police in 1853, collected after much labor the following statistics - Out of the children of the Ward, between the ages of 5 and 16, only attended public schools, and Sabbath schools, leaving without the common privileges ibf education, and destitute of public religious influence. In the unpublished Report of the Chief of Police for the year 1853, it appears that over commitments were made of persons under 21 years and by the estimate of the Police, nearly ar rests, during the same period, of minors. Crime among boys and girls has become organized, as it never 'was previously. The Police state that picking pockets is now a profession among a certain class of boys. They have their haunts, their flash language, their decoys, and coverers, as they are called, or persons Who will entice others where they can be plundered, and protect the thieves if they are caught.
