Download or read book New York written by Michael N. Danielson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1982-09-15 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the fourth in the Franklin K. Lane series on the governance of major metropolitan regions. The series is sponsored by the Institute of Governmental Studies and the Institute of International Studies, University of California in Berkeley. Readers of these volumes and other relevant literature will no doubt agree with the authors of this book that similar patterns are found in New York, London, Toronto, Stockholm, and indeed in "every other major metropolitan region in the United States and in other advanced industrial societies." The presence of such common factors and trends, although they assume different configurations in various metropolitan regions, has been demonstrated by the work of many scholars, including Peter Hall, Brian Berry, Marion Clawson, Jean Gottmann, Larry Bourne and William Robson, as well as by the authors of the other Franklin K. Lane books—Donald Foley, Albert Rose and Thomas Anton. In the present volume Michael Danielson and Jameson Doig have described and analyzed the cultural, economic, political and other social forces shaping development in the New York region. They present a picture of a region singular in its attractions, problems, geographic scope, magnitude of development, and complexity of the network of organizations involved in its governance.

Book Synopsis Dogs of the Railways by : Jill Lenk Schilp
Download or read book Dogs of the Railways written by Jill Lenk Schilp and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the vagabond canines that hopped on railroads across the United States, often becoming celebrities and national heroes. Chapters introduce canines like Owney, guardian of the railway mail service; Fala, FDR's beloved dog and train-companion; Annie, the Colorado railway ambassador; the K9 patrols who watch over the tracks; and many more. As railroads were changing America, these raildogs were changing the people who lived and worked in rail communities. For the dogs of the railways, home became the hearts of the people of the railroad. More than the dogs themselves, this book is about the human-animal relationship between a dog and a community and moments in history where that relationship symbolized the quest for home and belonging, a search that humans often share with our canine travelers.

Book Synopsis Long Island Rail Road: Oyster Bay Branch by : David D. Morrison
Download or read book Long Island Rail Road: Oyster Bay Branch written by David D. Morrison and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is the oldest railroad in the country still operating under its original name. The Oyster Bay Branch is one of the smaller branches but is probably the most historically significant one. There are 12 stations along the 14.3 miles of track (one station is closed but the building still stands). Of the 13 still existing LIRR stations built in the 1800s, six are on the Oyster Bay Branch. The branch is partly electrified, and two signal towers exist, one operating and one abandoned. At the terminal, Oyster Bay Station is the home train station of the 26th president of the United States--Theodore Roosevelt. The Oyster Bay Railroad Museum is currently restoring the train station, as well as the historic turntable and steam locomotive No. 35.
