Book Synopsis The Pan-Alpine Conservation Strategy for the Lynx by : Anja Molinari-Jobin
Download or read book The Pan-Alpine Conservation Strategy for the Lynx written by Anja Molinari-Jobin and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lynx was reintroduced in Switzerland in 1971 and has since increased its population to cover a substantial part of the Alps. The re-introduction was followed by a monitoring programme that has shown that the species still faces some challenges for its survival in the region. The Pan-Alpine Conservation Strategy for the Lynx (PACS) presented in this document states that no Alpine country can host a viable lynx population in isolation as all regional populations will be transboundary, and notes that international co-operation is essential for the conservation of shared populations, and even more to solve the mutual problems. The Strategy was endorsed by the Standing Committee to the Bern Convention in 2001.
Book Synopsis Wild Cats of the World by : Mel Sunquist
Download or read book Wild Cats of the World written by Mel Sunquist and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did you know that European royalty once used cheetahs to hunt deer, or that caracals can capture birds by leaping six and a half feet straight up into the air from a standing start? Have you ever wondered whether domestic cats really do land on their feet when they fall, or how Canada lynx can stalk their prey in the winter without falling through the deep snow? Wild Cats of the World is a treasure trove of answers to questions like these, and many others, for anyone who's interested in learning more about the world's felids, including the ones with whom we share our homes. Mel and Fiona Sunquist have spent more than a decade gathering information about cats from every available source, many of them quite difficult to find, including scientific papers, descriptions of hunts, archeological findings, observations by naturalists and travelers, reports from government agencies, and newsletters from a wide variety of organizations. Weaving information from these sources together with their own experiences observing wild cats around the world, the Sunquists have created the most comprehensive reference on felids available. Each of their accounts of the 36 species of cat contains a description of the cat, including human interactions with it, as well as detailed data on its distribution, ecology and behavior, status in the wild, and efforts to conserve it. Numerous photographs, including more than 40 in full color, illustrate these accounts. Ranging from the two-pound black-footed cat to the five-hundred-pound tiger, and from the African serval with its satellite-dish ears to the web-footed fishing cat of Asia, Wild Cats of the World will fascinate and educate felid fans of any stripe (or spot).

Book Synopsis The Establishment of Reintroduced Eurasian Lynx (Lynx Lynx) in a Forest-dominated Low Mountain Range by : Carolin Tröger
Download or read book The Establishment of Reintroduced Eurasian Lynx (Lynx Lynx) in a Forest-dominated Low Mountain Range written by Carolin Tröger and published by . This book was released on 2022* with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the influence of a predator on its prey and the resulting changes in prey behaviour and/or abundance is a widely-discussed subject in wildlife ecology, yet large gaps in knowledge remain. In addition, the return of a long absent predator in our human-altered environment prompts conflicts of human interests, especially among hunters and livestock breeders. Hence, understanding the predator-prey dynamics is a highly interesting topic scientifically as well as from an applied management perspective regarding the forest-game conflict. At the same time, studying habitat selection of large carnivores in our human-dominated landscape provides valuable information about their habitat requirements and adaptation to human disturbance. This supports management implications to establish and maintain viable metapopulations connected through corridors and thus can ensure genetic exchange. This thesis contributes in addressing this topic, aiming to investigate the establishment of newly reintroduced lynx (Lynx lynx) and its effect on the main prey species in a forest-dominated low mountain range in Germany.

Download or read book The Photo Ark written by Joel Sartore and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2017 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of photography represents National Geographic's Photo Ark, a major cross-platform initiative and lifelong project by photographer Joel Sartore to make portraits of the world's animals -- especially those that are endangered. His message: to know these animals is to save them. Sartore intends to photograph every animal in captivity in the world. He is circling the globe, visiting zoos and wildlife rescue centers to create studio portraits of 12,000 species, with an emphasis on those facing extinction. He has photographed more than 6,000 already and now, thanks to a multi-year partnership with National Geographic, he may reach his goal. This book showcases his animal portraits: from tiny to mammoth, from the Florida grasshopper sparrow to the greater one-horned rhinoceros. Paired with the prose of veteran wildlife writer Douglas Chadwick, this book presents an argument for saving all the species of our planet.
