Research was conducted within the framerwork of the Leadership Identity Development (LID) model authored by Komives, Owen, Longerbem, Mainella, and Osteen (2005). Of particular interest was the degree to which the data upheld the presence of the four development influences of the LID model : 1) peer influences 2) meaningful involvement 3) reflective learning and 4) adult influence.Framed by an understanding of college student development and emerging explanatations of the process of leadership identity development, the qualitiative study examined the influence of fraternity and sorority membership on the leadership identity development of college students. The findings derived from semi-structure interviews with fraternity and sorority leaders illustrate the context and cultures in which the particapants develop an identity as an leader. In addition, the study describes the processes and experiences that facilitate or hinder development.Nominated by student affairs professionals, twelve undergraduate fraternity and sorority members at one southern U.S. research institution particapated in the study. The findings suggest organizational factors and meaningful relationships support leader identity development ofr fraternity and sorority members. The study also suggests advancing practical applications of the theoretical construct of leadership identity development. The study concludes with recommendations for program development, practice, and further research. .

However, the development of leadership skills for traditional-age community college students can be challenging based on al traits and issues related to the community college context. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of leadership and personal development of leadership skills among traditional-age community college students. After collecting data through interviews with thirteen traditional-age community college students, general inductive analysis was utilized to investigate the perceptions and experiences related to leadership development. By using the leadership identity development theory as a theoretical framework, analysis resulted in the themes Defining Leadership, which included leadership identity, influence, qualities of effective leaders, and qualities of ineffective leaders; and Developing Leadership, which consisted of the impact of others, impact of personal experiences, and perceptions of personal leadership development. Participants reported varied movement through the leadership identity development model based on both the examples of others and personal experiences. Millennial generational traits were both beneficial and challenging to leadership development, as was the context of the community college. Performing arts students also exhibited a more developed leadership identity than did participants involved in athletics. Community college faculty, staff, and administrators can find relevance in these findings as they continue to assist students in developing leadership skills. Additional research in organizational-based leadership development, as well as continued research on the impact of experience in leadership identity development, is needed.

Leadership is a core component to an individual being an actively engaged citizen. How do college students learn and develop leadership skills? How do college students learn and become civically engaged during their collegiate years? The purpose of this study was to identify campus environmental factors perceived to influence student leadership development and civic engagement that resulted in students0́9 perceived capacity to create positive social change. The study was conducted at a public four-year comprehensive higher education institution regionally located in the south central region of the United States. This qualitative study examined undergraduate students0́9 perceptions of personal leadership, influences on personal leadership development, and experiences with leadership and civic engagement. Following a naturalistic qualitative research method, interviews were conducted with ten undergraduate participants. Hoy and Miskel (2001) higher education organizations social system model and A Social Change Model of Leadership Development by the Higher Education Research Institute (1996) was used as conceptual frameworks for the study. The researcher determined from participant responses that peer and mentor relationships, community identity, personal identity, and democratic experiences were key environmental factors influencing student leadership development and civic engagement. Collegiate relationships with peers and faculty/staff mentors were a primary influential factor to participants0́9 university experiences resulting in their perceived knowledge of leadership and value for civic engagement. Identity as a campus community member and local community member was an environmental factor influencing participants0́9 commitment to civic engagement. Participants who were engaged in their personal cultural heritage articulated a deeper understanding of leadership and had a greater commitment to engaging with ethnically diverse populations. Participants who experienced the tenants of Democratic values in their academic and co-curricular experiences had a deeper sense of empowerment to create positive social change. The conclusions drawn from the researcher0́9s findings indicate the depth to which campus environmental factors influence student leadership development and civic engagement result in the level students0́9 build their leadership knowledge and capacity. The intent of the study was to gain an understanding of a campus environment through the constructed reality of individuals within the environment in order to determine factors that can be enhanced to improve leadership development and civic engagement.

Little research has been conducted on student activism and leadership development. As student affairs educators consider leadership an important part of an undergraduate education it is important to consider how the context of activism actually influences student leader identity development. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of contemporary student activism on college student leader identity development so that Christian Higher Education student affairs professionals can provide purposeful educational experiences that assist the understanding of a leader identity in student activists. -- Data were collected using qualitative phenomenological methods, specifically semi-structured in-depth interviews. Seventeen junior and senior college students who are exemplar activists from a small, selective, residential, engagement-rich, Christian liberal arts college in the Midwest participated. The interview sessions were analyzed and compared in an effort to identify categories and themes that summarize activists' leadership identity development. -- Resulting analysis revealed four primary findings. First, activists in this study collectively define leadership as a relational environment imbued with clearly defined values and purposes whereby all members have the opportunity to engage, explore, and empower as followers and leaders together. Four significant elements that make up what a relational environment of leadership means to them includes: selflessness, collaboration, responsibility, and visionary. -- Second, activists desire to have a strong identity of being a relational, humble and yet confident leader and desire to be more like the person of Jesus Christ; however, they are still discovering their unique qualities and abilities as a leader. -- Third, involvement in an activist context has considerable positive effects on college student leader identity development: 1) the impact of a relational environment deepens self-confidence, 2) the unique site to integrate, ground and make meaning out of personal values develops authenticity, 3) encountering hands-on learning shapes behaviors, and 4) the independence of relying on one's own beliefs and feelings helps determine self-authorship. -- Fourth, activists' experiences are consistent with Komives et al. (2006) LID model and did appear to help students' progress through the model.
