Book excerpt: Concrete repair materials are being widely used to restore and extend the service life of structures. While most cement-based repair materials are compatible with concrete structures, their durability properties do not attract much attention which it deserves from researchers. Since repair materials can deteriorate like conventional concrete, the search for reliable, long-lasting concrete repair materials is becoming more intensive. Amongst other factors, concrete permeability and chloride diffusivity within concrete are believed to play a major role in determining the durability and success of the repair. These two parameters determine the penetration rate of aggressive substances into concrete and how fast degradation could take place. A number of test methods have been proposed to study these two factors, and the commonly used test methods are water penetration, surface/bulk electrical resistivity, rapid chloride permeability (RCP), and half-cell potential. However, the relationship between each durability test method and their correlation with compressive strength measurement have not been fully understood. So, in this study, we aim for using multiple testing techniques, destructive and non-destructive, to evaluate the durability of concrete repair materials as well as correlating different test methods. Three types of commercially available cement-based materials are tested and evaluated, and results have indicated that cementitious concrete mortar (termed as Mix M) amongst others has the best durability performance which means low water permeability, high resistivity, and compressive strength. Whereas, the flexural performance of Mix M still needs some improvement in terms of flexural strength and flexural toughness. For various durability testing methods, surface resistivity is found to have a strong linear relation and a polynomial relation to bulk resistivity and water permeability respectively. No relationship is established between concrete resistivity and compressive strength, though high-strength concrete tends to have a high resistivity in our study. RCP test results do not correlate well with resistivity measurements, which requires further study to overcome its heating and binding effect when measurements are being taken. Half-cell potential method is used for validating test results but it reveals no difference for materials with different permeability and resistivity. A model is proposed to counteract temperature's effect while calculating the coefficient of diffusion, which indicates the concrete to resist chloride diffusion. It is found that this model can shift the RCP measurement slightly closer to its theoretical prediction but the difference between them is still large. Therefore, further research is required for acquiring more raw data from RCP measurements as the regression analysis input. In addition, a more comprehensive model that involves more correction factors for binding effects, etc., is also needed.

Book excerpt: If the durability of repaired concrete structures is a primary objective of any repair project, then every effort should be made to ensure adequate bonding between the repair and the existing concrete substrate. A total of 257 partial-depth cores in 77 experimental repairs were tested in Florida, Illinois, and Arizona in order to evaluate the effect of material properties and environmental conditions on the bond between repair and concrete substrate. Three pull-off testing devices were used to determine the bond strengths for each of the experimental repairs. In addition, the testing devices themselves were evaluated by analyzing the magnitude and relative precision of the pull-off strengths, modes of failure, and ease of use in an effort to identify a reliable and practical device for determining in situ tensile bond. The optimum depth of core drilling into the existing substrate was determined by comparing theoretical finite element analysis of failure zone stress distribution with measured test results.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The durability of concrete repairs depends to a large extent on the proper selection and application of repair materials. Restrained contraction of repair materiais, the restraint being provided through bond to the extsting concrete substrate, is a major factor which significantly increases the complexity of repair projects as compared to new construction. Preliminary performance criteria for dimensionally compatible repair materials were developed based on a state-of-the-art review of the literature on cement-based repair materials. These preliminary criteria are intended for screening and selecting cement-based materials for concrete surface repairs. A comprehensive experimental program of laboratory and field tests was developed to verify the performance criteria. (MM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study reported herein is part of an overall investigation to develop performance criteria for cement-based materials. Preliminary performance criteria for dimensionally compatible repair materials were proposed in Phase I of the study. Laboratory and field tests to evaluate these criteria were conducted in Phase II of the project. The field-testing program described herein included installation of 12 selected cementitious repair materials in prefabricated repair cavities at each of three test sites and monitoring their performance during an 18-month period following installation. The test sites were selected to provide a wide variation in exposure conditions ranging from the hot and dry conditions encountered in Arizona, to hot and humid conditions encountered in Florida, to the northern climate of Illinois. In addition to the simulated repairs, the field performance of each material was evaluated with two restrained drying shrinkage test methods. Relative rankings of the materials were developed based on their field performance with resistance to cracking being the predominate factor in these rankings. Six materials demonstrated satisfactory performance regardless of exposure conditions. Two materials were susceptible to cracking at only one test site, and their performance is rated as marginal. The remaining four materials exhibited cracking in each exposure condition, and their performance is rated as unsatisfactory.

In Phase I of the study, preliminary criteria for dimensionally compatible repair materials were developed based on a review of the literature. This review concentrated on identifying pertinent material properties, appropriate test methods, and demonstrated field performance. Laboratory and field tests to evaluate the preliminary performance criteria were conducted in Phase II of the project Twelve candidate repair materials were selected for the experimental portion of the project Bach material was subjected to a series of standard and nonstandard laboratory tests to determine properties which were perceived to be of interest in a repair context and to provide some basic information about their behavior. These tests included: (a) unrestrained and restrained drying shrinkage, (b) modulus of elasticity, (c) tensile and compressive creep, (d) coefficient of thermal expansion, and (e) flexural, compressive, and direct tensile strengths. Concurrent field tests were also conducted to evaluate material durability. Results of the laboratory investigation are described herein. Results of laboratory and field performance tests will be correlated (Phase III) to provide a basis for development of performance criteria for cement-based materials that will provide durable concrete repairs.

This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The progressive deterioration of concrete surface structures is a major concern in construction engineering that requires precise repairing. While a number of repair materials have been developed, geopolymer mortars have been identified as potentially superior and environmentally friendly high-performance construction materials, as they are synthesized by selectively combining waste materials containing alumina and silica compounds which are further activated by a strong alkaline solution. Geopolymers as Sustainable Surface Concrete Repair Materials offers readers insights into the synthesis, properties, benefits and applications of geopolymer-based materials for concrete repair. • Discusses manufacturing and design methods of geopolymer-based materials • Assesses mechanical strength and durability of geopolymer-based materials under different aggressive environmental conditions • Characterizes the microstructure of these materials using XRD, SEM, EDX, TGA, DTG and FTIR measurements • Describes application of geopolymer-based materials as surface repair materials • Compares environmental and cost benefits against those of traditional OPC and commercial repair materials This book is written for researchers and professional engineers working with concrete materials, including civil and materials engineers.
