Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume four of the Defragmenting African Resource Management series is about partnerships and power games in natural resources management as stakeholders compete over environmental goods and services in the Okavango Delta. The Okavango Delta Management Plan development process-the main arena for negotiating stakes in and access to the Okavango Delta land and water resources-is a battlefield for partnerships and power games. In other natural resource management side events, mini platforms have been created and partnerships formed to negotiate stakes and claim authority and rights over resources. Those with political and economic power and knowledge stand a better chance to win power games, resulting in the 'survival of the most resourced.' This book suggests that the defragmentation of natural resource management through integration at all scales will spread resources and facilitate equity and benefit sharing. Download or read book The Hambukushu Rainmakers of the Okavango written by Thomas John Larson and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In light of the terrible AIDS tragedy unfolding in southern Africa, one gets an enormous sense of sadness and loss when reading The Hambukushu Rainmakers of the Okavango. Tom J. Larson was one of the last anthropologists to experience and record their ancient culture before it was so radically impacted by modernization and the ravages of the AIDS epidemic. Over the course of many years, he earned the trust of the Hambukushu and was allowed the kind of access needed to painstakingly record the minutiae of every aspect of their daily lives. What emerged is a portrait of a complex, distinctive African culture defined by the abundance of their homeland, the vast and wild Okavango River delta, and by the powerful Rainmaker chiefs who controlled the very fabric of their existence. To read Larson's extraordinary book is to understand how the belief systems that worked so well for them for centuries wreak such havoc on them today.
Book Synopsis African Economic Development by : Christopher Cramer

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Unevenness and inequalities form a central fact of African economic experiences. This book challenges conventional wisdoms about economic performance and possible policies for economic development in African countries, using the striking variation in economic performance as a starting point. African Economic Development: Evidence, Theory, and Policy highlights not only difference between countries, but also variation within countries. It focuses on issues relating to gender, class, and ethnic identity, such as neo-natal mortality, school dropout, and horticultural and agribusiness exports. Variations in these areas point to opportunities for changing perfomance, reducing reducing inequalities, learning from other policy experiences, and escaping the ties of structure and the legacies of a colonial past. African Economic Development rejects teleological illusions and Eurocentric prejudice, criticizing a range of orthodox and heterodox economists for their cavalier attitude to evidence. Instead, it shows that seeing the contradictions of capitalism for what they are - fundamental and enduring - may help policy officials protect themselves against the misleading idea that development can be expected to be a smooth, linear process, or that it would be if certain impediments were removed. Drawing on decades of research and policy experience, this book combines careful use of available evidence from a range of African countries with economic insights to make the policy case for specific types of public sector investment.
Book Synopsis Socio-economic Survey of Subsistence Fishing in the Okavango Delta, Botswana by : Barbara Ntombi Ngwenya
Download or read book Socio-economic Survey of Subsistence Fishing in the Okavango Delta, Botswana written by Barbara Ntombi Ngwenya and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of subsistence or artisanal fishing in the Okavango Delta of Botswana, the report concludes that people who fish for food in the Delta are socio-economically marginalized, dominated by a single ethnic group, the BaHambukushu, predominantly women, with limited access to economic resources. Fishing is opportunistic and seasonal and mainly done with traditional baskets. The fishery's greatest value lies in the use of fish for food for domestic consumption. Some subsistence fishers claim that government and commercial fishermen try to stop them from basket fishing. The report points to the lack of a national fisheries policy. Such a policy could help support and safeguard this major source of livelihood.

Book Synopsis Human Impact on Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa by : Michael B.K. Darkoh
Download or read book Human Impact on Environment and Sustainable Development in Africa written by Michael B.K. Darkoh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-20 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. Based on a blend of knowledge and perspectives from a variety of disciplines this volume examines the human-environment interaction in Africa, with a focus on the economic, social and political processes that generate environmental change and problems in this region. Currently there are controversies over and challenges to such concepts and issues as environment-human relationships, ecological resilience, decertification, sustainable development, globalization and North-South dialogue. This book draws upon past and present research findings to discuss these issues. It features: an examination of the characteristics, processes and patterns of environmental crises; an analysis of the principal issues and challenges facing policy makers and implementers; and the promotion of awareness of theoretical, empirical and comparative research. The volume not only seeks to answer some of the old questions, but also open up new ones for further discussion.
Book Synopsis Africa's Stalled Development by : David K. Leonard
Download or read book Africa's Stalled Development written by David K. Leonard and published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful discussion probes the international roots of Africa's civil conflicts and lackluster economies. Analyzing an unwitting system that creates a set of incentives inimical to development, the authors offer a new way of thinking about Africa's development dilemmas and the policy options for addressing them. Weak states, aid dependence, crushing debt, and enclave economies, argue the authors, create disincentives for long-term economic growth and even peace. The nature of Africa's interaction with the international system often supports these negative features; thus, the remedy must come from a radical restructuring of that relationship. Africa's Stalled Development heeds that call by presenting specific and innovative prescriptions for change that are sure to stimulate a much-needed debate. -- Publisher description.
