Abstract: The purpose of this research was to investigate how intrapersonal and environmental factors shape the beliefs and experiences of talented athletes in Hong Kong, using a case study approach. The four participants involved in the study were elite athletes recognised for their outstanding sporting achievements. A literature review of previous studies suggested that genetic and environmental factors influence talent development in the sporting domain, with four key themes worthy of further investigation: self-perceptions of natural abilities in sport (talent), self-motivation, coach, and family and school. To achieve a deeper understanding of these variables, a qualitative approach involving semi-structured interviews was used to examine the nature and complexity of the process of talent development. The results indicated that the participants did not tend to perceive themselves as significantly talented or "very special." However, there was evidence that the four factors identified above critically influenced the development of their talent, both positively and negatively. Based on the participants' stories, a conceptual framework was constructed to represent the interplay among the major influences on talent development. The findings have implications for improving or modifying the strategies commonly used to maximise talent development in elite athletes in Hong Kong. However, the limitations of this small-scale research study are acknowledged. DOI: 10.5353/th_b5017760 Subjects: Athletes - China - Hong Kong

This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade witnessed a plethora of literature about talent identification and talent development. Most of the research is descriptive. In addition, an enormous quantity of publications attempted to define normative guidelines, but mostly with relatively little empirical evidence to support them. We believe it is time to overview the field, critically appraise the situation of research, and map the topics, trends, and gaps. The large part of recent research has focused on talent identification and the factors that reveal talents. In contrast, relatively less research has addressed the question how young talents develop in a long-term process towards becoming senior high-performers. This is an evolving field and research is still in a primarily explorative stage. A variety of different study designs and methodological approaches have been employed to explore different factors and outcomes of talent development, yielding heterogeneous findings.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The impact of all of the higher order themes led to the adoption of an interactional framework, taking into account the many factors that were involved in becoming a highly successful college athlete. In addition, a grounded theory depicting the development of highly successful collegiate athletes was developed to visually depict the results and emphasize the importance of environmental opportunities, critical social influences, and critical incidents in the lives of the athletes. Also, a grounded theory depicting the importance of a social support system in athletic talent development emerged. This study supported aspects of previous research, yet expanded it because of the materialization of the importance of overcoming adversity. Therefore, developing innate talent through critical social influences was central to overcome critical incidents in order to develop into a highly successful college athlete.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the burgeoning government interest in and support for elite sport development particularly Olympic performance, many nations and regions have adopted various strategies to enhance their medal performance at the Olympic Games. Despite a plethora of research on elite sport policy in Western countries and increased research attention directed to a wide range of Asian nations including China, there is a dearth of the analysis and exploration of Hong Kong in the context of elite sport development particularly regarding to policy making process. This research explored and analysed the policy making process of elite sport development in Hong Kong since 1990, in relation to three sports: cycling, fencing and Taekwondo. The policy analysis is underpinned by multiple streams framework and policy transfer. Data were collected from 18 semi-structured interviews with officials, coaches, athletes and scholars. These data were supplemented by documents ranging from official publications, influential media outputs and academic research. The major findings are that (1) the key policies that promoted elite sport development are increasing funding, establishing facilities, employing high-level coaches, prioritising one event and setting up academy; (2) the external factors and internal factors have impacts on policy change are government turnover, national mood, party ideology, focusing events, feedback and the emergence of young talents; (3) the policy entrepreneurs involved in the policy-making process are commercial sectors in cycling and the head coach in fencing; (4) Mainland China is the main target nation for policy transfer and the major rationales are the fear of lagging behind its rival nations and a desire to achieve better performance in major i events. This research explored one of the most visible and powerful non-sovereignty entity's distinctive elite sport policy trajectory and evaluated the utility and applicability of the Western-derived policy theories and frameworks into an Asian context with significant heritage of Western influence. In addition, this research can stimulate stakeholders in Hong Kong elite sport development to consider how to seize the opportunity to promote policy change and how to pursue policy transfer to improve its elite performance.
