Book excerpt: Current perspectives highlight the importance of educational sector in designing the socio-economic development of a country. It accelerates the economic growth through knowledge and skills development by improving human capabilities. Education is also perceived as an economic commodity. During the last few decades, private schools in Malaysia have emerged as an essential source of imparting education at various levels (Proap & Rihed, 1995). Private schools received financing in part or as a whole from tuition fees, fundraising, and alumni contribution. Providing the children with the most excellent educational atmosphere is parents' desirable wish. Their choice to invest in their children's education is based on a few numbers of factors; social, economic and cultural factors. The research emphasizes on analysing parents' motivation and factors in selecting private school for their children. It aims at investigating factors that influenced parents' decision when selecting private schools for their children. Three problem statements emphasized which are; Planning or development of private schools are not in the Local Plan (LP), Physical development of facilities provided does not adhere to school development guidelines and Social Exclusion. The objectives of the research are to study the development of private schools in Selangor, to identify the factors influencing parents' decision in selecting private schools over public schools, to assess the physical condition of the selected private schools based on Manual Guidelines of Town and Country Planning Department and/or School Infrastructure requirement by the Ministry of Education, and to provide suggestions and recommendations in enhancing the development of private schools within the study area. The data for this research were collected through site observation of physical conditions and facilities of participating private schools, questionnaire survey of 510 respondents among parents and interview sessions with the administrators and parents to validate the findings from site observation and questionnaire survey. The state of Selangor is selected to represent the overall states in Malaysia due to the presence of many esteemed and established private institutions. Based on the study, the potential relationship of Social Background/Status, Income Level, School Syllabus, School Environment/Facilities, School Performances, Location, Teacher Quality and Distance were analysed. Using the Relative Important Index (RII), it was found that the parents ranked factors as stated; school syllabus, school environment, school performances, teacher quality, location, distance, social background and income level. The recommendations for the study is to provide a specific guidelines as well as proper land use provision for private educational institution in land use planning and highlighted the important of private schools in providing alternative, variety and specialist education other than offered by normal public schools in Malaysia. The study also acknowledge that the provision of proper and adequate facilities and formulation of a detailed and inclusive private school environment to all children.

Book excerpt: In all parts of Asia, households devote considerable expenditures to private supplementary tutoring. This tutoring may contribute to students' achievement, but it also maintains and exacerbates social inequalities, diverts resources from other uses, and can contribute to inefficiencies in education systems. Such tutoring is widely called shadow education, because it mimics school systems. As the curriculum in the school system changes, so does the shadow. This study documents the scale and nature of shadow education in different parts of the region. Shadow education has been a major phenomenon in East Asia and it has far-reaching economic and social implications.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the intertwined relationships between globalisation, nation-building, education, and reform as manifested throughout the modern history of Brunei Darussalam, an Islamic monarchy located on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. It is the first book dedicated to the examination of Brunei’s education system, schooling, teacher education, and society in close connection with the national philosophy Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) or Malay Islamic Monarchy. The authors provide a historical understanding of the country’s education and tell Brunei’s story of educational reform and change in its own language, narratives, accounts, and unique standpoints. Interdisciplinary chapters draw on significant historical and textual sources in three languages, namely Arabic, English, and Malay, to contribute to scholarship on education studies, international and comparative education, and international and development education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have brought global expansion of private supplementary tutoring alongside regular school systems. This expansion has far-reaching implications for the nurturing of new generations, for social and economic development, and for the operation of school systems. Some dimensions are positive while other dimensions are problematic. Supplementary tutoring is especially visible in Asia. The formats of tutoring range from one-to-one provision to large classes. Some tutoring is provided by teachers and by specialist companies, while other tutoring is provided informally by university students and others. Using a comparative lens, this book examines possible government responses to the expansion of private supplementary tutoring. In general, the book suggests, the sector should be given more attention. The work shows wide diversity in the regulations introduced by governments in the Asian region. It notes not only that these governments can learn much from each other, but also that policy makers in other parts of the world can usefully look at patterns in Asia. The book also stresses the value of partnerships between governments, tutoring providers, schools, teachers' unions, and other bodies.

Book excerpt: Going to College tells the powerful story of how high school students make choices about postsecondary education. Drawing on their unprecedented nine-year study of high school students, the authors explore how students and their parents negotiate these important decisions. Family background, finances, education, information—all influence students' plans after high school and the career paths they pursue, as do the more subtle messages delivered by parents and counselors which shape adolescents' self-expectations. For high school guidance counselors, college admissions counselors, parents and teachers, and public policy makers, this book is a valuable resource that explains the decision-making process and helps adults to help students make appropriate choices. The authors identify predisposition, search, and choice as the three stages in the student decision-making process. Predisposition refers to the plans students develop for education or work after they graduate from high school. The search stage involves students discovering and evaluating a variety of colleges and universities. In the choice stage, students choose a school to attend from among a list of institutions that are being seriously considered. Understanding exactly how students move through the predisposition, search, and choice stages of the college decision-making process can help students and parents prepare themselves for this process and consider a wider array of options. For education professionals, understanding this process can lead to new initiatives to guide students and families effectively—by providing better incentives for college savings, for example, or devising more effective early information programs about postsecondary education. Going to College is the first book to seriously study over an extended period the decisions that have a pervasive and lasting impact on individual careers, livelihoods, and lifestyles. The authors conclude with important recommendations for improving academic support, exploring various financial options, providing early encouragement—in other words, for recognizing the factors that influence students' decisions, and knowing when to pay attention to them.

This book was released on 2018-11-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This authoritative reference source covers all higher education themes in a comprehensive, accessible and comparative way. It maps the field for the twenty first century reflecting the massive changes that have occurred and the challenges ahead for future research. It provides a rich diversity of scholarly perspectives and covers the entire spectrum of higher education from a geographical, a topical and disciplinary perspective. It is unrivaled in its capacity to go beyond national boundaries and provides indispensible comparative analyses. The major reference works available about higher education have been published more than two decades ago and since then higher education has undergone major changes that have resulted in a much larger, diverse, global, and multidimensional reality. One of the main trends has been relentless expansion on a worldwide scale. This has led to mass higher education becoming a reality across continents, substantial growth in the number of countries with universal access to higher education, and great diversification of the student body. The tremendous increase in the international links in higher education, through issues such as training, students’ mobility, staff mobility, research activities, is another major change. The consequence is a global dimension that is strongly associated with the intensification of international networks in which institutions and researchers explore, create and share knowledge. As a result of the changes and trends, higher education has increasingly become part of debates that highlight its complexity as an institution that combines relevant political, social, economic, and cultural purposes and dimensions. Asked to play important and varied economic and social roles, higher education has had to reshape its priorities, and organizational and decision-making structures. The growth and increased complexity of the field have both led to more attention being paid to all aspects of higher education and to the expansion of research.
