Book excerpt: A three-day symposium was organized by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and convened at Nanaimo, British Columbia in November 1985. Advice on subject matter and participation came from an external committee of senior scientists and administrators in contributing agencies in Canada, Japan, the United States, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The papers included in the proceedings deal with sockeye biology and stock management. Papers on sockeye biology are divided into those concerned primarily with life history strategies and enhancement and development. Papers dealing with management are divided into the tools of management and management of some principal stocks.

Book excerpt: "The relative importance of sockeye salmon, invertebrate predators, and other environmental factors in structuring the size and abundance of zooplankton populations was examined in a series of 23 lakes from southern Alaska. Zooplankton abundance was strongly related to sockeye density, along with nutrient availability and alkalinity. The mean size of Bosmina longirostris, the dominant herbivorous cladoceran, was positively correlated with the abundance of the predatory copepod, Cyclops columbianus. Changes in the size and abundance of Bosmina remains over the past 300-500 years were then determined for sediments from two lakes on Kodiak Island, Alaska. The zooplankton communities showed varying responses to past changes in salmon populations, resulting from relative changes in the magnitude of adult salmon-derived nutrient loading and in predation pressure from juvenile sockeye and cyclopoid copepods. Knowledge of how various factors impact zooplankton can have important implications for the effective management of sockeye within these lake systems"--Leaf 3.

Book excerpt: Ecological studies on the fresh-water phases of the life history of sockeye salmon and studies on related limnology and climatology were made at Brooks Lake, Alaska, in 1957. Data are presented and interpreted on adult sockeye salmon spawning distributions and behavior, age, sex, length, fecundity, and bear predation; on juvenile sockeye salmon ages, food, growth, migration from the lake, relative abundance, and distribution in the lake; and on climatological and limnological factors that may influence sockeye salmon behavior and abundance.

Book excerpt: Pacific salmon are an important biological and economic resource of countries of the North Pacific rim. They are also a unique group of fish possessing unusually complex life histories. There are seven species of Pacific salmon, five occurring on both the North American and Asian continents (sockeye, pink, chum, chinook, and coho) and two (masu and amago) only in Asia. The life cycle of the Pacific salmon begins in the autumn when the adult female deposits eggs that are fertilized in gravel beds in rivers or lakes. The young emerge from the gravel the following spring and will either migrate immediately to salt water or spend one or more years in a river or lake before migrating. Migrations in the ocean are extensive during the feeding and growing phase, covering thousands of kilometres. After one or more years the maturing adults find their way back to their home river, returning to their ancestral breeding grounds to spawn. They die after spawning and the eggs in the gravel signify a new cycle. Upon this theme Pacific salmon have developed many variations, both between as well as within species. Pacific Salmon Life Histories provides detailed descriptions of the different life phases through which each of the seven species passes. Each chapter is written by a scientist who has spent years studying and observing a particular species of salmon. Some of the topics covered are geographic distribution, transplants, freshwater life, ocean life, development, growth, feeding, diet, migration, and spawning behaviour. The text is richly supplemented by numerous maps, illustrations, colour plates, and tables and there is a detailed general index, as well as a useful geographical index.

Book excerpt: "Anadromous sockeye salmon are the only Pacific salmon that require an extensive rearing period in a lake environment. Recent studies suggest changes in lake nutrient inputs are directly related to the magnitude of annual spawning populations (escapement), and can be quantified by sediment stable isotope analysis of nitrogen 15N). Marine nitrogen supplied by returned salmon is enriched in 15N relative to the freshwater nitrogen, which is derived from atmospheric N2 (ð15N=0 0/00). Recent (1987-1996) limnological investigations of Chilkat Lake, Alaska, matched to brood year escapement estimates, indicate that sockeye marine-derived phosphorus and nitrogen contributed up to 87% and 20%, respectively, of the lake nutrient pool. Since salmon populations fluctuate annually, the resulting marine derived nutrient (MDN) inputs and ð15N also fluctuate. Sedimentary ð15N is positively correlated (r2=0.8605, p=0.0076, df=5) with observed escapement. Additionally, ð15N is positively related to lake paleoproductivity and inversely correlated with high concentrations of CaCO3 and glacial silt. The frequency and duration of these CaCO3 inputs are believed to be the result of climate related glacial meltwater intrusions from the Tsirku River. Thus, fluctuations in MDN can be shown to influence the overall sockeye salmon production at Chilkat Lake by controlling lake productivity"--Leaf iii.

Book excerpt: The downstream migration of salmon smolts is triggered by a combination of responses to multiple environmental indicators, imposed on internal circannual rhythms, that result in variation between populations in timing. Using long-term data on daily smolt counts and associated environmental variables from multiple sources across Alaska, I tested the hypothesis that variation in migration timing between different sockeye salmon populations could be explained by differences in local environmental conditions. I first analyzed the peak, width, and interannual variation of the smolt migration period for eight populations from southwestern and southcentral Alaska. I then modeled the median emigration date and width of the emigration period as a function of stream temperature, air temperature, and precipitation to assess how each population responds to combinations of seasonal environmental cues that serve as indicators for the onset of downstream migration or conditions in the recipient environment (sea surface temperature). Lastly, I used the results of my analysis to identify spatial variation in the response of distinct salmon populations to environmental factors and identify trends in the migration timing of those populations. Through my analysis, I found that sea surface temperature and freshwater temperature are the primary environmental factors that control median smolt emigration date, while the width of the smolt emigration window is influenced primarily by freshwater temperatures and precipitation, with significant site-by-site variation.
