Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal events occurring on an near a propellant surface during ignition were observed simultaneously using an optical detector operating over two narrow wavelengths: 3.79 micrometers which is free of interfering CO2 and H2O thus representing radiation from the surface and 0.43 micrometers which detects the CH radical in the flame above the surface. Aluminized and non-aluminized PBAA/AP propellants were heated using an arc-imaging furnace with argon or oxygen flowing near the propellant surface at different velocities and irradiation levels. Combustion products of CO-O2-N2 mixtures of varying compositions were also used to heat the propellants convectively in a hot gas tunnel. Furthermore, the non-aluminized propellant was ignited chemically with fluorine. Differences in the ignition delay time as measured by the two detectors were observed under certain conditions. Factors affecting these differences and the magnitude of the delay time are discussed. (Author).

Book Synopsis The Ignition of Solid Propellants by Radiative, Convective and Chemical Heating by : Sami Atallah
Download or read book The Ignition of Solid Propellants by Radiative, Convective and Chemical Heating written by Sami Atallah and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of an experimental study in which aluminized and non-aluminized composite solid propellants were ignited under different environmental conditions. Ignition was achieved by radiative, convective and chemical heating. An optical system operating in two narrow wavelength bands was used to detect the onset of ignition on and near the surface of the propellant. It was found that ignition delay time was dependent on the wavelength used for detection, the method of heating, and other environmental factors. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to existing ignition theories, and recommendations are made for further study. (Author).
Book Synopsis Ignition of Composite Propellants Under Rapid Pressure Loading by :

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive theeoretical model for ignition of composite solid propellants was proposed as a framework for formulating ignition models for different propellants under a wide range of operating conditions. Detailed chemical kinetics information for the AP/PBAA propellants was incorporated into the proposed theoretical model for ignition of composite solid propellants, enabling a more complete description of source terms in the gas-phase energy and species equations. Solid-phase energy equations were coded and implemented on a computer. Numerical solutions of the solid-phase subprogram were successfully checked against analytic solutions for some limiting cases. Using actual measured heat flux near the propellant surface as an input to the solid-phase equations, predictions for the ignition delay time were made. Effects of pressurization rate, crack-gap width, and igniter-flame temperature on the ignition of AP-based composite solid propellants located at the tip of an inert crack were studied. The ignition process was observed by using a high-speed camera ( -40,000 pictures/s) and a fast-response photodiode system. Heat flux to the propellant surface was measured with a thin film heat-flux gage. A bright luminous zone behind the reflected compression wave was observed at high pressurization rates. The decrease in ignition delay with increasing pressurization is caused by enhanced heat feedback to the propellant surface at higher pressurization rates.
Book Synopsis Experimental Investigation of the Ignition Process of Solid Propellants in a Practical Motor Configuration by : Robert William Lancaster
Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Ignition Process of Solid Propellants in a Practical Motor Configuration written by Robert William Lancaster and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of the ignition process of a composite solid propellant (80 wt-% NH4ClO4 plus 20 wt-% P-13 resin and additives was made in a combustion chamber whose configuration resembled that of a practical solid propellant motor. A small gas rocket chamber generated high temperature gaseous products, which in turn supplied the ignition energy to the internal surface of a cylindrical thin-web, case-bonded solid propellant grain. The ignition delay, the time between igntion of the gas igniter and the first ignition of the solid propellant grain, was measured as a function of the temperature, pressure, the chemical reactivity of the hot gases, and the velocity of these gases over the solid propellant surface. The ignition times were measured by means of a strain-gage pressure transducer inserted in the solid propellant motor chambr. (Author).

Book Synopsis Composite Solid Propellant Ignition Mechanisms by : Larry J. Shannon
Download or read book Composite Solid Propellant Ignition Mechanisms written by Larry J. Shannon and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface structures of thermoplastic and elastomeric fuels were found to be markedly different upon exposure to conductive heating from a doubly compressed stagnant gas at oxygen concentrations below those required to cause ignition. The thermoplastic polymers exhibited a molten surface, while the elastomeric fuels showed no visible changes. Vaporization followed by a gas-phase reaction is the probable ignition mechanism for the thermoplastic fuels in the shock tube environment. A gas-solid reaction may occur in the ignition of elastomeric polymers. No general conclusion can be drawn regarding the precise nature of the oxygen-polymer ignition process in the shock tube environment as consideration must be given to the physical structure of the polymer surface. Ignition characteristics of several representative ammonium perchlorate composite propellants were studied using the arc-imaging furnace. The nature of the fuel component was found to have the major influence on the ignition time, and the effect is related to the initial pressure. A model describing composite propellant ignition in a neutral environment was formulated and programmed for computer studies.
