Book excerpt: Modified Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Fly Ash or Natural Pozzolans for Use as a Mineral Admixture in Portland-Cement Concrete (ASTM C 311) Pozzolanic (Strength) Activity Index tests with five fly ashes and two portland cements were done to compare results with those of standard tests. When sand contents (at constant water and cement contents) were varied, strengths of 38°C cured mortars decreased (−30 to −50 kPa/g of sand added in mixes containing 1370 to 1570 grams of sand) for different cement/fly ash blends. When water contents (at constant sand contents) were varied, strengths varied (−125 to +190 kPa/mL), strengths tending to increase because of paste volume increases with water content. Flow of mortars in both kinds of tests increase nearly linearly with paste volume fractions; the slopes are related by a factor of 0.60 ± 0.04. Accelerated curing at 38°C for tests at 28 days usually yields higher relative strengths than after curing at 23°C for 91 days. Multiple linear regression equations using both kinds of test data are solved at specified flow and strength values to determine proportions and mortar volume yields. This more general performance test ranks fly ashes (or cementitious mixtures) by mortar volume yield at equal flow and strength, and is suggested as a candidate to replace the present Strength Activity Index test.

Book Synopsis Accelerated Strength Tests of Pozzolans by : Rembert Leeroy Curry
Download or read book Accelerated Strength Tests of Pozzolans written by Rembert Leeroy Curry and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results of accelerated strength tests of cement-pozzolan and lime-pozzolan mixtures were compared with results of 28-day cement-pozzolan and 7-day lime-pozzolan tests. The accelerated cement-pozzolan strength test was one in which specimens were autoclaved at 1-day age. The accelerated lime-pozzolan strength tests in the investigation were tests of specimens at 3 days age that had been stored at temperatures of 130, 180, and 200 F. The results of the 3-day lime-pozzolan test with storage at 180 F and using reagent grade lime were comparable to the results of 28-day cement-pozzolan and 7-day lime-pozzolan tests. Part of a draft of a Federal test method for pozzolans is presented. (Author).
Book Synopsis Some Factors Affecting Cement Mortar Strength Results Using ASTM Standard Test Methods C 348 and C 349 by : NG. Zoldners

This book was released on 1973 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of certain factors on test results when using ASTM Methods C 348 and C 349. For this purpose, four series of 3 mortar mixes each were made, and companion test specimens were molded using both hand tamping and vibrating methods. The results showed that, (1) Compaction of mortar test prisms by hand tamping produced densities which increased from the center towards both ends of the prism by an average of 2.1 percent; whereas this increase for prisms which were compacted by vibration averaged only 0.3 percent: (2) Compressive strengths by modified cube tests at the end locations averaged 5.6 percent higher than those at the middle of broken halves of the prisms compacted by hand tamping, but there was only 0.7 percent difference in strengths for the prisms compacted by vibration (Series IV): (3) The density of prisms compacted by vibration was, on the average, 3 percent less than that of tamped prisms. However, their flexural strength, on the average, was 8.5 percent higher than that of prisms compacted by tamping. (4) In comparison with standard 2-in. (50 mm) cube strengths, the compressive strengths of modified cube tests at the middle of broken halves and at the end of the prism averaged 96.0 and 101.7 percent, respectively, for tamped or 96.2 and 96.8 percent, respectively, for vibrated test specimens.

Download or read book Pozzolans written by Mahipal Kasaniya and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well understood that partial replacement of portland cement with pozzolans generated as industrial by-products, such as fly ash and silica fume, have advantageous implications on the long-term performance of concrete. However, the production of the most widely available and exploited pozzolan, fly ash, is predicted to substantially decrease in the future due to the termination of coal-fired power stations around the globe. Therefore, it is crucial to explore pozzolans such as natural pozzolans and ground glasses to meet the burgeoning demand for sustainable cementitious materials. It is of a great significance to precisely assess the reactivity of pozzolans before using in major applications in the construction industry. The existing reactivity tests: strength activity index (ASTM C311/618) and lime-reactivity (CSA A30004 E1) are unreliable in evaluating pozzolans because of either inconsistent or inadequate mixture proportions. The Canadian standard test based on lime-reactivity, CSA A30004-E1, was modified by investigating four mixture designs comprising of combinations of pozzolan, portlandite (hydrated lime), calcite, and either alkaline or sulphate solution. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and compressive strength tests were performed to determine the optimum portlandite proportion. The mixture design resulting in the highest compressive strength in mortars and bound water in pastes was used to establish the highest degree of the reactivity of pozzolans. This mixture design was further tested by modifying the curing regime: solution, temperature and duration. A broad-range of cementitious materials including industrial by-products, natural pozzolans and ground glasses were investigated in concretes for compressive strength, chloride permeability and migration coefficient, electrical surface and bulk resistivity, and bulk electrical conductivity. Mortar prisms were prepared for periodic monitoring of expansion due to alkali-silica reaction and sulphate attack. The results demonstrated that a larger number of natural pozzolans and ground glasses tested have considerable potential for use in concrete considering their comparable or better performance than industrial by-products (e.g., fly ash and silica fume).

This book was released on 2013-09-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to present the latest findings in the properties and application of Supplementary Cementing Materials and blended cements currently used in the world in concrete. Sustainability is an important issue all over the world. Carbon dioxide emission has been a serious problem in the world due to the greenhouse effect. Today many countries agreed to reduce the emission of CO2. Many phases of cement and concrete technology can affect sustainability. Cement and concrete industry is responsible for the production of 7% carbon dioxide of the total world CO2 emission. The use of supplementary cementing materials (SCM), design of concrete mixtures with optimum content of cement and enhancement of concrete durability are the main issues towards sustainability in concrete industry.
