Book excerpt: Excerpt from Factors in Modern History Whatever I may hope to say or to do in the ensuing lectures, one thing at least I shall not attempt; and that is, to give you a history of England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centu ries. An effort of that kind would simply result in the perpetration of yet another of those miserable text-books of English history, which may be meces sary but are certainly evil, which prefer knowledge to understanding, and seem expressly designed to nip the bud of historical interest and to clip the wings of historical imagination. It is almost a miracle that any incipient students of history survive this crushing ordeal: if they do, it must be due to the inspiration of the living voice; and no teacher of history worth the name relies upon the compilations which the examination-system compels him to inflict upon his class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Features of the New History: Apropos of Lamprecht's "Deutsche Geschichte" The regular factors -in historical life, then, appear and grow within the nation. They are the natural, the individual, and the social psychic. These, however, do not constitute the whole sum of influ ences to which any given people may be subject; for evolution goes on also under the working of certain general or world tendencies. When the civilization of one nation is brought by any means into contact with that of another; there is an interchange of influences. It may be by the processes of a renascence _or by some action be tween peoples of the same period; in any case historical develop ment is largely determined in this way. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causal Idea in History With a view to bringing out these causal relations, it seems to us that the study of history might well be approached from the standpoint of that theory which has proved so help ful and suggestive along other lines, the general evolutionary theory. TO be sure, the facts of history should not be used as a medium through which to convey favorite ideas or doc trines, evolutionary or otherwise. It must not be thought for a moment that it is the function of the historian or teach er to solve social, historical, or philosophical problems. The danger of doing violence to the facts by such Procrustean process would be too great. On the other hand, it would ap pear that the use Of a few preliminary concepts, to be em ployed not obtrusively but incidentally, as possible vantage grounds from which to group and compare facts that might otherwise have little significance because confused, could not but be Of disciplinary value. In looking for the factors that go to make history, it is easy to draw the line between man and the Objective world about him, as well as to couple with this the idea of continu ous change both in man and in his surroundings - to bring out, in other words, the concepts Of heredity (the static prin ciple) and Of environment (the active or modifying principle.) If we were to make a cross-section Of any stage Of human progress beyond the most primitive, these are the two factors that we should find working together: changing Objective conditions, resulting in successively new adaptations; and heredity, representing in crystallized form the sum total of the adaptations of the past, providing as well, the material upon which new Objective conditions produce their results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Factors in the Problem of American Internationalism It has seemed that it might be well if, at the opening of this annual meeting of the World Alliance, we should remind ourselves of the changes that have taken place which make it natural to call for and expect a new deal in this international game. We may be amazed, as we look into the matter, to realize how many and how significant are the new factors in the problem. The way lies clear, as it has not before, for a new and honorable and satisfying policy of inter nationalism on the part of our country. First among the new factors we may note the softening of feeling due to lapse of time and change of personnel. The changes are chiefly in the direction of added emphasis on social and economic factors in our history. New illustrative material has been added, the maps have been improved, and the bibliographical references brought down to date. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Times and the Living Past To present the history of the world in a single volume and to make the story at the same time attractive and useful to young readers is a most difficult task. Only the general sweep of the great current of events can be followed; only the salient features that contributed most to the development of the nations can be included. The two questions that must constantly be in the mind of the writer are, first, what to choose for the text, and second, how to present it. As to the first, he must be able to appraise historic values; he must present that which will lead the reader to visual ize the past so as best to grasp the problems that contributed most to the social, moral, economic, and political development of the peoples whom he is studying. Thus by acquiring a correct knowledge of his historical inheritance, the reader will understand and appreciate the principles on which are based the ideals and institutions of the civilization of the present. As to the second, the method of presenting history, especially for young readers, these facts must be borne in mind: The great majority of high-school pupils will never become specialists in history. Intensive scientific study from the sources is therefore out of place in the secondary schools, except for an occasional diversion. It is recommended that classes be led to dip now and then into the source fountains; but if confined to this form of study, pupils will leave school with no knowledge of the great march of human events, and with little or no interest to continue the study in the future. Moreover, they will miss the culture and the intense interest that pertains to the great human story. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and the Great War: An Outline of the Factors Which Have Culminated in the Present World Struggle The Great War may be studied from many angles. In 1915 under the direction of President G. Stanley Hall, of Clark University, one of his students sent out a circular to cities in eight states to discover how many schools were teaching the war, and if so, why. Replies were received from eighty-seven cities, and these reasons President Hall has summed up roughly as follows: First - It is a great vitalizer of geography. To bring and show maps of. The positions of the armies and of the coun tries involved, with places that come to a focus of interest from day to day, is capable of impressing a very wide vital interest in Geography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Growth and Stability: A Consideration of the Factors of Modern Society and Their Relation to the Character of the Coming State In one way and another mankind has always been seeking happiness. The primitive man may have found his chief satisfaction in appeased hunger, rest, and dominion over animals of field and forest. With a somewhat better development, it is probable that the ambition for dominion on the part of the strong over the weak resulted in outrage and oppression, and that for mutual protection tribal relations were established. Out of these rude primitive compacts, society has grown. From the beginning its chief purpose has been to extort justice from power. The conflict between opposing interests has never ceased; the strong have asserted the "right divine" to appropriate the labor of others. This claim has been contested by those whose interests have been threatened. The individualism of the earlier centuries was absolute and despotic; this weakened and finally disappeared among the Western nations. As the present is the product of infinite factors working in the past, we must ever get, as we go on and as life changes about us, new glimpses of forces that have made us what we are. With the sum of human attainments ever mounting, and a commensurate increase in the knowledge and skills necessitated by an ever more complex civilization, it becomes important to consider economy of time and effort, together with excellence of product, in education as in any other modern enter prise. To this end it is essential that education be so organized as to utilize existing interests and develop those which are potential, thus harnessing the forces of native tendencies and integrating them for desirable ends.
