Book Synopsis Nutritional Improvement of Food and Feed Proteins by : Mendel Friedman
Download or read book Nutritional Improvement of Food and Feed Proteins written by Mendel Friedman and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978 with total page 906 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our objective should be to improve the quality and quantity of available food and feed sources by all feasible methods. Much new chemistry and engineering is needed to support genetics and agronomy. Food fortification and supplementation need better guidance based on research. Deleterious side reactions in food storage and processing need to be eliminated or minimized. Ways to measure protein nutritional quality based on information from chemical, biochemical, microbiological, animal, and human studies need to be correlated and optimized. New protein food sources need to be developed; related toxicological and nutritional problems need solutions.

Book Synopsis Nutrient Requirements of Laboratory Animals, by : National Research Council
Download or read book Nutrient Requirements of Laboratory Animals, written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-02-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since the third edition of this indispensable reference was published, a great deal has been learned about the nutritional requirements of common laboratory species: rat, mouse, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, and vole. The Fourth Revised Edition presents the current expert understanding of the lipid, carbohydrate, protein, mineral, vitamin, and other nutritional needs of these animals. The extensive use of tables provides easy access to a wealth of comprehensive data and resource information. The volume also provides an expanded background discussion of general dietary considerations. In addition to a more user-friendly organization, new features in this edition include: A significantly expanded section on dietary requirements for rats, reporting substantial new findings. A new section on nutrients that are not required but that may produce beneficial results. New information on growth and reproductive performance among the most commonly used strains of rats and mice and on several hamster species. An expanded discussion of diet formulation and preparationâ€"including sample diets of both purified and natural ingredients. New information on mineral deficiency and toxicity, including warning signs. This authoritative resource will be important to researchers, laboratory technicians, and manufacturers of laboratory animal feed.

Book Synopsis The Rumen and Its Microbes by : Robert E. Hungate
Download or read book The Rumen and Its Microbes written by Robert E. Hungate and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rumen and Its Microbes is a contribution to the ecology of this important microbial habitat. Relatively few microbial habitats have been subjected to a thorough quantitative ecological analysis. The rumen fermentation is peculiarly suitable because of its relatively constant and continuous nature and because of the very rapid rates of conversion of organic matter. Although analysis of the ruminant-microbe symbiosis is still far from complete, knowledge is sufficient for formulation of principles and for identification and measurement of important parameters. The first eight chapters of the book include a description of the rumen and its microbes, their activities, and the extent of these activities. This basic biology provides a framework in which applications to agriculture can be evaluated. These applications are discussed in the last four chapters: host metabolism, variation in the rumen, possible practical applications, and abnormalities in rumen function.

Book Synopsis Urea as a Protein Supplement by : Michael H. Briggs
Download or read book Urea as a Protein Supplement written by Michael H. Briggs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urea as a Protein Supplement presents the significant advances that have been made in ruminant nutrition. This book examines the role of the rumen flora and fauna as synthesizers of protein from non-protein nitrogen sources such as ammonium compounds and urea. Organized into four parts encompassing 23 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the use of urea and other non-protein nitrogen sources in ruminant nutrition. This text then explores the various methods that may be used for the preparation of urea, which involves the dehydration of ammonium carbamate produced by the reaction of carbon dioxide and ammonia at high pressure and temperature. Other chapters consider the ways in which urea could be utilized to increase protein supplies. The final chapter deals with the hydrolysis of urea by urease to ammonia and carbon dioxide, which has been used as a method for determining urea for many years. Agricultural scientists and farmers will find this book useful.

Book Synopsis Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition by : Young W. Park
Download or read book Milk and Dairy Products in Human Nutrition written by Young W. Park and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 1063 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Milk is nature’s most complete food, and dairy products are considered to be the most nutritious foods of all. The traditional view of the role of milk has been greatly expanded in recent years beyond the horizon of nutritional subsistence of infants: it is now recognized to be more than a source of nutrients for the healthy growth of children and nourishment of adult humans. Alongside its major proteins (casein and whey), milk contains biologically active compounds, which have important physiological and biochemical functions and significant impacts upon human metabolism, nutrition and health. Many of these compounds have been proven to have beneficial effects on human nutrition and health. This comprehensive reference is the first to address such a wide range of topics related to milk production and human health, including: mammary secretion, production, sanitation, quality standards and chemistry, as well as nutrition, milk allergies, lactose intolerance, and the bioactive and therapeutic compounds found in milk. In addition to cow’s milk, the book also covers the milk of non-bovine dairy species which is of economic importance around the world. The Editors have assembled a team of internationally renowned experts to contribute to this exhaustive volume which will be essential reading for dairy scientists, nutritionists, food scientists, allergy specialists and health professionals.
