Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the factors which effect the thermal shock resistance of polyphase ceramic systems was conducted with the model system zirconium carbide-graphite. The research was divided into two areas: (1) theoretical calculations of the individual material properties, which show that the included graphite particles may be regarded as spherical pores; and (2) experimental data, which substantiate the postulate that increased thermal shock resistance is a result of an increase in the ratio of strength over Young's modulus, brought about by the addition of the low Young's modulus phase. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Thermal Conductivity Conference was started in 1961 with the initiative of Mr. C. F. Lucks and grew out of the needs of researchers in the field. From 1961 to 1973 the Confer ences were held annually, and have been held biennially since 1975 when our Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) of Purdue University became the permanent Spon sor of the Conferences. These Conferences provide a broadly based forum for researchers actively working on the thermal conductivity and closely related properties to convene on a regular basis to ex change their ideas and experiences and report their findings and results. The Conferences have been self-perpetuating and are an example of how a technical community with a common purpose can transcend the invisible, artificial barriers between disciplines and gather togeth er in increasing numbers without the need of national publicity and continuing funding support, when they see something worthwi1e going on. It is believed that this series of Conferences not only will grow stronger, but will set an example for researchers in other fields on how to jointly attack their own problem areas.
Book Synopsis Ultra-High Temperature Materials II by : Igor L. Shabalin
Download or read book Ultra-High Temperature Materials II written by Igor L. Shabalin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-04-24 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exhaustive work in three volumes and over 1300 pages provides a thorough treatment of ultra-high temperature materials with melting points over 2500 °C. The first volume focuses on Carbon and Refractory Metals, whilst the second and third are dedicated solely to Refractory compounds and the third to Refractory Alloys and Composites respectively. Topics included are physical (crystallographic, thermodynamic, thermo physical, electrical, optical, physico-mechanical, nuclear) and chemical (solid-state diffusion, interaction with chemical elements and compounds, interaction with gases, vapours and aqueous solutions) properties of the individual physico-chemical phases of carbon (graphite/graphene), refractory metals (W, Re, Os, Ta, Mo, Nb, Ir) and compounds (oxides, nitrides, carbides, borides, silicides) with melting points in this range. It will be of interest to researchers, engineers, postgraduate, graduate and undergraduate students alike. The reader is provided with the full qualitative and quantitative assessment for the materials, which could be applied in various engineering devices and environmental conditions at ultra-high temperatures, on the basis of the latest updates in the field of physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering.
