Download or read book Allelopathy written by S.J. Rizvi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science is essentially a descriptive and experimental device. It observes nature, constructs hypotheses, plans experiments and proposes theories. The theory is never contemplated as the 'final truth', but remains ever subject to modifications, changes and rejections. The science of allelopathy in a similar way has emerged, and exists on a similar footing; our endeavour should be to keep it fresh and innovative with addition of newer in formation and concepts with the rejection of older ideas and antiquated techniques. During the past few decades encouraging results have been obtained in various aspects of allelopathic researches. However, in addition to continuing efforts in all these directions, constant attempts are to be made to describe the mechanics of allelopathic activity in molecular terms and to discover ways and means to exploit it for the welfare of mankind. We feel that multidisciplinary efforts are the only tool to achieve this goal. It is the hope of the editors that this book will serve as a document which identifies an integrated approach, through which research both to understand and exploit allelopathy can be conducted. The present volume arose out of an attempt to bring together eminent scientists in allelopathy to describe their work, of a highly diverse nature, under one title.

This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der höherer Pflanzen – Allelopathie” by Gerhard Grümmer appeared in 1955. It was a remarkable and unique summary of a science, that had received little attention, but which was to captivate the attention of plant ecologists decades later. While Hans Molisch was credited for coining “allelopathy” (in German) in 1937, his monograph dealt primarily with the effects of ethylene. It was Gerhard Grümmer, a young academic at Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University, Greifswald, who marshalled the existing world literature on the chemical interactions of plants into the world's first coherent textbook on allelopathy. Grümmer, however, worked in East Germany, at a time when the “iron curtain” was descending, and his book on allelopathy remained little known outside Germany. In 1957, the book was translated into Russian, which helped advance subsequent allelopathic studies in the U.S.S.R. In the English-speaking world, the first comprehensive mono-graph on allelopathy is considered to be “Allelopathy” by E.L. Rice, published in 1974, and revised in 1984. While Molisch's heralded book has been both reprinted, and translated into English, Grümmer's meritorious volume has been sadly overlooked, and to this day still provides important insights into many allelopathic problems, in particular root excretions, pollen allelopathy, and chemical interactions in mistletoes. For these reasons, an English trans-lation of “Die gegenseitige Beeinflussung der höherer Pflanzen – Allelopathie” is long overdue, and it is hoped that its publication will assist ecologists in their research and consolidate Grümmer's position as a founding figure in the development of allelopathy as a science.

Book Synopsis Insects, and Seed Collection, Storage, Testing, and Certification by : T.T. Kozlowski
Download or read book Insects, and Seed Collection, Storage, Testing, and Certification written by T.T. Kozlowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seed Biology: Insects, and Seed Collection, Storage, Testing, and Certification, Volume III brings together a large body of important information on seed biology. The book describes seed collection, identification, storage, testing, and certification. It also considers insects that directly affect seeds, seed-producing organs, or seed-bearing structures of plants. Organized into six chapters, this volume begins by outlining man's dependency on seeds as source of food, fiber, spices, beverages, oils, vitamins, and drugs. Harmful effects of seeds are also mentioned. Separate chapters focus on seed development, dissemination, germination (including metabolism, environmental control, internal control, dormancy, and seed and seedling vigor), protection from diseases and insects, longevity, and deterioration. The book concludes with a discussion on the certification of field and tree seeds, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development certification schemes, and trends in seed certification. This book is a valuable source of information for seed producers and users as well as various groups of research biologists and teachers, including agronomists, plant anatomists, biochemists, ecologists, entomologists, foresters, horticulturists, plant pathologists, and plant physiologists.

Download or read book Weed Physiology written by Duke and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weeds are plants existing at places and/or times at which they are considered undesirable by man. Thys, man‘s primary interest in weeds is in dinging methods for eliminating their presences. Understanding the physiology of weeds and how it differs from that of crop plants is becoming increasingly important in discovering new chemical, genetic, and cultural methods of controlling weeds. The two volumes of this book will aim to discuss the following; the physiology of weed production the ecophysiology of weeds, the mechanisms of herbicide action, and the mechanisms of herbicide resistance and tolerance.
