Book excerpt: One of the major goals pursued by the author of this study is to give hope to doctoral-non-completer-students who wish to earn their Doctorate in Education (Ed.D.). The other major goal is to provide insight to instructors and institutions about why a doctoral student might leave a program whilst guiding the instructors and institutions about the factors doctoral-non-completer-students need to complete their Ed.D. degree. Therefore, this research will examine: What are the principal factors that influenced doctoral-non-completer-students to leave their original doctoral program without completing the degree? Thus, doctoral-non-completer-students will have a voice and share their opinions about their experience at their original doctoral degree program. The research findings of this study identify employment and financial factors as the principal reasons for non-completion of the doctorate. Furthermore, program environment, program disorganization, perception that not all of the required courses were in line with the degree, lack of support, lack of dissertation coursework, and job stressors were additional factors for the doctoral-non-completer leaving their original doctoral program. Let it be noted that none of the doctoral-non-completer-students reached out to their original higher educational institution to explain their personal situation and ask for help. In addition, this study will also address the following guiding question: What are the principal factors that influenced these prior doctoral-non-completer-students to complete their degree requirements in a different university’s doctoral program? This research will also allow the former-doctoral-non-completer to have a voice and share their opinions about their experience at the Institution Z’s All But Dissertation Completion Program (ABD program). The main reason Participant A completed the ABD program at Institution Z was on-line courses that was highly flexible. Whereas Participant B was able to restructure his life (i.e., retire) and Participant C was in a different financial situation. In addition, a cohort model, connecting with other students, supportive dissertation chair, flexibility with program requirements, and course-structure when writing dissertation were additional factors for the participants completing the ABD program. Institution Z does not use a typical doctoral course sequence. Instead, Institution Z utilizes a simultaneous doctoral course sequence, which includes a dissertation course-structure.

The literature indicates persistence rates among the social sciences are even lower. This study examined factors influencing doctoral student persistence in education administration programs. Tinto's theory of graduate student persistence framed four research questions: Do the demographics of doctoral students persisting to degree completion in education administration differ from those not completing their programs? Do doctoral students in education administration programs articulate experiences of academic integration as influencing their persistence? Do doctoral students in education administration programs articulate experiences of social integration as influencing their persistence? Do doctoral students in education administration programs attribute commitments to external obligations as influencing their persistence? The design of the study was interpretive and exploratory in nature and utilized constant comparative analysis techniques. Survey and interview were used to collect participant views of doctoral student experiences. Participants (N = 30) for the study included those who had completed their dissertations (N = 15) and those who were All But Dissertation (N = 15) and attended two comprehensive research universities in the southeastern United States. The major findings from the study were that (a) no differences existed in demographics reported by degree completers and ABO participants; (b) degree completers described experiences related to academic integration, social integration, and external obligations as having sustaining effects on their perSistence to degree completion; (c) and ABO participants described experiences related to academic integration, social integration, and external obligations as having restraining effects on their perSistence. Findings indicated that students having positive academic and social integration experiences and the ability to negotiate shared responsibility for duties related to external obligations were more likely to complete their programs. Findings also supported that students having negative academic and social integration experiences and an inability to negotiate shared responsibility for duties related to external obligations were less likely to complete their programs.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the perspectives of All-But-Dissertation (ABD) students who are currently enrolled in an ABD completion program after failing to complete their dissertations with their initial institutions of higher education and to then inform the higher education community about what ABD students need to be successful at this level of their doctoral work and ultimately lower attrition rates at their institutions. The literature reviewed was focused on Knowles’ (1973) Theory of Adult Learning or Andragogy, doctoral cohort programs, supervisor influence on ABD students, faculty incivility, and how to avoid ABD status. Using a phenomenology methodology and Colaizzi’s analysis techniques, the researcher interviewed members of an ABD completion program to uncover what went wrong the first time, how they felt about their inability to complete their dissertations, what made them try again, how they chose their current institution, and whether the ABD completion program was leading them to a successful outcome. Findings indicated a lack of support and faculty incivility by dissertation chairs and committee members during the dissertation phase as the main causes for the participant’s inability to complete their dissertations, which led to devastating effects on participants psychologically, emotionally, and financially. Intrinsic determination led the participants to try again to achieve the goal of earning an Ed.D., and after finding an ABD completion program with the right people and program, participants were able to either experience a successful outcome or felt that they would complete their dissertations and therefore, their earn their degrees.

D. administration program. The research questions sought answers as to why some students completed their dissertations and why some did not, the processes in completing a dissertation, and what should be included in a doctoral guide for completing the dissertation. The participants of this study were Ed. D. administration doctoral students in the field of educational leadership from a southwestern university. The job titles of the participants ranged from teacher to superintendent. The participants started the three-year doctoral program in the years 2004, 2005, 2006, or 2007. They were between the ages of 24 and 63. Survey Monkey provided the opportunity to request answers to different questions depending on the dissertation statusenrollee, completer, or non-completer. This study entailed interviewing seven doctoral completers, five enrollees, and four noncompleters. The significance of this mixed method study was to compare influences and processes to determine suggestions for a study guide that could be used by future doctoral students, chairs, programs, and universities to help students complete their dissertations and become successful graduates. Recommendations are made (a) to recruit more African Americans and men into doctoral programs and the education field; (b) non-completers be invited to finish their dissertations with interventions and an accountable chair; (c) chairs provide his or her best help to meet the student half-way; (d) the department and university provide accountability measures and incentives for both the student and the chair; and (e) provide specific lessons that include finding a topic, researching a topic, and interacting with the chair; and (f) it was determined that non-completers were not timid as suggested in the literature but were found to have either changed their desire or fulfilled their desire by obtaining a promotion. In summary, a nurturing chair and a strong support system were found to be two major factors in determining the difference between doctoral completion and non-completion.
