Book excerpt: Modeling water quality has been shown to be a useful tool in strategizing water quality management. Dissolved oxygen (DO) has one of the largest impacts on water quality compared to other parameters. The purpose of the dissertation research is to generate a regression equation model, using the US EPA QUAL2K model as the base, to determine different factors affecting minimum dissolved oxygen concentrations in streams, to determine the critical distance for the minimum dissolved oxygen concentration, and the magnitude of impact of each parameter. Based on regression analysis, the factors affecting minimum DO in river water are effluent biochemical oxygen demand, effluent flow rate, river flow rate, river temperature, and effluent DO in that order. The simulation study of QUAL2K is related to stream classification and degree of treatment of municipal wastewater. Important factors affecting minimum dissolved oxygen concentrations in streams and corresponding critical distance or critical time in streams, which receive municipal wastewater treatment plant effluent discharge, include effluent BOD, river Q, effluent Q, and river temperature. Based on regression analysis, the factors affecting minimum DO in river water are effluent BOD, effluent Q, river Q, river temperature, and effluent DO, in that order. The application of the end result of this study can be used to determine the degree of municipal wastewater treatment to maintain a desirable stream classification and river water quality.

Book excerpt: "Appearance and odors of putrefaction, blackening of water, destruction of major fish life and green plant life and most of the miscellaneous effects associated with gross stream pollution result from the utilization of the stream's oxygen reserve. Extensive studies have been made to date regarding the factors influencing the dissolved oxygen in streams. Unfortunately, the majority of the published reports and present theories have evolved from studies made in more temperate climates. Although the general factors which affect the oxygen balance in temperate climates also exist in subarctic climates the variation in magnitude and effect of these factors results in a unique situation. The simultaneous action of the many oxygen exchange processes often makes separation and study of individual contributing effects difficult under natural conditions. Knowledge of all factors affecting the oxygen balance must, therefore, be evaluated in order to determine which factors predominate in any given situation. In this regard a review was made of existing literature to ascertain current knowledge and techniques concerning factors contributing to the dissolved oxygen regime. A comparison of this was then made to existing information and techniques used in studies on subarctic streams. Finally, an evaluation was made to distinguish and characterize basic differences in the oxygen balance of subarctic streams, particularly during winter conditions. The review and evaluation resulted in several observations. The effects of photosynthesis are generally regarded as negligible during winter conditions in sub-arctic streams. Runoff is also minimal. Significant oxygen demands can be exerted at low temperatures. Discrepancies between the rate of removal of BOD and DO consumption indicate that respiration by aquatic organisms, reduced flows and sedimentation and/or biological extraction are contributing factors. Nitrification during periods of ice cover is not significant. Reaeration in open water stretches can be substantial depending upon the hydrodynamic effects of various ice forms among other things. The addition of oxygen demanding substances to ice-covered streams where the dissolved oxygen concentration is already at a critical level may easily result in anoxic conditions"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: I investigated seasonal and inter-site variation in factors influencing diel dissolved oxygen (DO) metabolism at four streams in the Virginia Coastal Plain. Data were collected monthly from January to August 2008 to characterize DO metabolism (diel DO amplitude, production, respiration), incident solar radiation (PAR), dissolved nutrients, fine benthic materials (mass, C:N, Chl[alpha]) and hydrology (discharge, water transit time, transient storage). Reach-scale metabolism estimates were determined using the one-station diurnal DO technique and transit time and transient storage were determined by conservative tracer additions. Incident solar radiation was the primary determinant of DO metabolism as streams experiencing higher light levels (Herring and Powell Creeks) exhibited greater diel DO amplitudes, production and respiration. Streams with greater riparian shading (Courthouse and Crump Creeks) exhibited lower DO metabolism despite their higher nutrient concentrations. Higher incident solar radiation was associated with greater benthic algal biomass at some (Herring, Crump, and Courthouse Creeks) but not all (Powell Creek) sites. Diel DO amplitudes were significantly and positively correlated with benthic Chl[alpha] and incident solar radiation at less shaded sites. These factors were not significant predictors of DO amplitude, production or respiration at more shaded sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface This text is designed to provide a fundamental knowledge of the phenomenon known as self-purification in streams. Sufficient background information and references on stream ecology and self-purification are presented to provide readers with an understanding of the various concepts under discussion. Moreover, along with the stream self-purification process and biological indication of stream health, water quality and source sampling are discussed in depth. Wastewater and water treatment personnel, students, specialists, water resource managers, ecologists, regulators, and water pollution control personnel concerned with activities and preventive measures to prevent stream pollution will find this consolidated information important. Other professional wastewater- and water-related staff from governmental agencies, municipal water supply and wastewater systems, public health departments, and environmental health agencies will also find the information valuable. This text, however, is also intended for readers and groups interested in and concerned with stream pollution and stream contamination control. This text can be used as a basic or supplemental text in undergraduate and technical school courses in aquatic ecology or stream quality enhancement and protection. It can also be consulted as an environmental reference text by school, municipal, and water resource professionals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This presentation describes various aspects of the regulation of tissue oxygenation, including the roles of the circulatory system, respiratory system, and blood, the carrier of oxygen within these components of the cardiorespiratory system. The respiratory system takes oxygen from the atmosphere and transports it by diffusion from the air in the alveoli to the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries. The cardiovascular system then moves the oxygenated blood from the heart to the microcirculation of the various organs by convection, where oxygen is released from hemoglobin in the red blood cells and moves to the parenchymal cells of each tissue by diffusion. Oxygen that has diffused into cells is then utilized in the mitochondria to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the energy currency of all cells. The mitochondria are able to produce ATP until the oxygen tension or PO2 on the cell surface falls to a critical level of about 4–5 mm Hg. Thus, in order to meet the energetic needs of cells, it is important to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen to the mitochondria at or above the critical PO2 . In order to accomplish this desired outcome, the cardiorespiratory system, including the blood, must be capable of regulation to ensure survival of all tissues under a wide range of circumstances. The purpose of this presentation is to provide basic information about the operation and regulation of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, as well as the properties of the blood and parenchymal cells, so that a fundamental understanding of the regulation of tissue oxygenation is achieved.
