Book excerpt: A strong mathematics background is essential for job opportunities and advancement in a developing country like Malaysia. It gives students the confidence and ability to solve problems and become rational as well as critical in their thinking. However, Malaysian students’ mathematics achievement is relatively low as compared to other school subjects. This difference is more pronounced in rural schools. Previous studies have highlighted the relationship between students’ attitude and achievement in mathematics. Hence, it is important to investigate the contributing factors that affect students’ attitudes towards mathematics. This book is adapted and modified from a PhD thesis entitled: “Factors affecting students’ attitude towards mathematics in Sabah, Malaysia” of the first author. In this book, the relationships among perceived parental influences, teacher affective support, classroom instruction, gender, SES, students’ previous achievement and students’ attitude towards mathematics are portrayed using Structural Equation Modeling approach. Findings from the study can be utilised to understand the complex interplay of relationships that form students’ attitude towards mathematics, including factors that can be addressed by the classroom mathematics teacher. This book will be useful for secondary school mathematics teachers, researchers, school administrators, students, and policymakers.

The world over, rural schools generally get short shrift in the allocation of resources and prestige, their lack of urbanness often a self-fulfilling indicator of deficiency. As a result perhaps, rural students may perform, on average, less well than others in terms of the expectations and needs of parents and communities as well as on standard measures of achievement. Though every country has rural schools schools that are often identified as troubled, little research has examined rural schooling across nations. Even the most basic descriptive information is lacking: How prevalent are rural schools in different countries? What percentage of students live in rural areas? How do rural students perform relative to their non-rural counterparts? Are patterns of achievement by rural students consistent across countries? Of particular interest are the poor. How well do poor rural students perform relative to other groups of students? How big a role do family characteristics play in conditioning academic performance in rural areas? What are the value and the values of rural education? Such questions are especially salient for mathematics, for mathematics competence is essential to full participation in the economic, political and social life of the community and the nation.

Uganda's problem with increasing resource constraints for education is common in many developing countries and the lessons learned in this study may be of broad interest. Currently, Uganda allocates over 31 percent of its discretionary recurrent expenditure to education and 67 percent of this is allocated to primary education. Given increasing pressures on the budgets, there is need to implement strategies focusing on those inputs most likely to improve student learning. A major impediment to rational decision making in this area is lack of knowledge about what interventions work best and under what circumstances. Without this knowledge, Government may continue spending scarce resources on inputs that may not directly contribute to student learning achievement.

The results show a leveling off of the performance of American 17-year-olds, who had shown a decline between 1978 and 1982; 9-year-olds' performance has changed little from assessment to assessment. These findings are described and interpreted by a panel of mathematics educators.
