De plus les proches doivent être considérés comme des partenaires de la relation de soins en fin de vie, et donc intégrés aux décisions et aux soins eux-mêmes s'ils le souhaitent. Nous, professionnels de santé, devons être attentifs aux proches, car le retentissement de cet accompagnement n'est pas anodin. Il entraîne des répercussions sur leur vie professionnelle, personnelle, familiale et sur leur santé. Il est donc important de leur consacrer du temps afin d'entendre leur souffrance et de les préparer à la mort de leur parent, pour qu'ils puissent être présents auprès de leur malade et vivre ses derniers moments avec lui jusqu'au bout. La pluridisciplinarité de l'accompagnement d'un patient en soins palliatifs et de ses proches est cruciale. Le développement des HAD ainsi que des réseaux est donc préconisé. Les formations de tous les soignants sont aussi essentielles. Et une transmission des savoirs aux proches nous semble recommandée.
