Book excerpt: A Research Guide to Southeastern Europe: Print and Electronic Sources is designed to aid those interested in exploring this dynamic region in locating the best resources available, whether looking for archival collections in Albania or dissertations and theses in Greece. It provides readers up-to-date information on a variety of research collections from over twenty countries and in over a dozen languages. The focus of the volume is on the modern era, primarily the 18th century to the present, the subject areas of the humanities and social sciences, though researchers from outside of the subject and temporal scope of the work will find information of use, and the countries of Albania, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova (including the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic), Montenegro, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey. This volume is distinctive in that it is the only bibliographic resource that offers such extensive subject, linguistic, and regional treatment. This work is composed of five chapters and three appendices. The chapters are focused on research materials, giving readers access points for critical materials on Southeastern Europe both in print and digital formats from libraries, archives, journals, and databases. The appendices focus on library classification, educational programming geared to language instruction, and transliteration of non-Latin scripts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is a collection of open-access papers describing the foundations and applications of the Method of Dimensionality Reduction (MDR), first published in the Journal “Facta Universitatis. Series Mechanical Enginerring” in the years 2014-2018. The Method of Dimensionality Reduction (MDR) is a method of calculation and simulation of contacts of elastic and viscoelastic bodies. It consists essentially of two simple steps: (a) substitution of the three-dimensional continuum by a uniquely defined one-dimensional linearly elastic or viscoelastic foundation (Winkler foundation) and (b) transformation of the three-dimensional profile of the contacting bodies by means of the MDR-transformation. As soon as these two steps are done, the contact problem can be considered to be solved. For axial symmetric contacts, only a small calculation by hand is required which does not exceed elementary calculus and will not be a barrier for any practically-oriented engineer. Alternatively, the MDR can be implemented numerically, which is almost trivial due to the independence of the foundation elements. In spite of its simplicity, all results are exact. The present book brings together papers covering the most important aspects of the MDR and providing a practical guide for its use.

Book excerpt: The most well-known analytical method is the perturbation method, which has led to the great discovery of Neptune in 1846, and since then mathematical prediction and empirical observation became two sides of a coin in physics. However, the perturbation method is based on the small parameter assumption, and the obtained solutions are valid only for weakly nonlinear equations, which have greatly limited their applications to modern physical problems. To overcome the shortcomings, many mathematicians and physicists have been extensively developing various technologies for several centuries, however, there is no universal method for all nonlinear problems, and mathematical prediction with remarkably high accuracy is still much needed for modern physics, for example, the solitary waves traveling along an unsmooth boundary, the low-frequency property of a harvesting energy device, the pull-in voltage in a micro-electromechanical system. Now various effective analytical methods have appeared in the open literature, e.g., the homotopy perturbation method and the variational iteration method. An analytical solution provides a fast insight into its physical properties of a practical problem, e.g., frequency-amplitude relation of a nonlinear oscillator, solitary wave in an optical fiber, pull-in instability of a microelectromechanical system, making mathematical prediction even more attractive in modern physics. Nonlinear physics has been developing into a new stage, where the fractal-fractional differential equations have to be adopted to describe more accurately discontinuous problems, and it becomes ever more difficult to find an analytical solution for such nonlinear problems, and the analytical methods for fractal-fractional differential equations have laid the foundations for nonlinear physics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to provide insights into recent advances in distributed intelligent circuits, systems and their applications. Distributed intelligence is the key enabler for innovations in machine-to-machine communications. The innovations are directed towards keeping existing algorithms as the base and developing new intelligent systems by employing smart technologies. Artificial intelligence (AI) and, more specifically, deep learning (DL) are receiving significant attention in assisting doctors in the detection of disease patterns without much human intervention. In agriculture, robots automate slow, repetitive and dull tasks, allowing farmers to focus more on improving overall production yields. The evolving trends point to the interface of artificial intelligence with machines being a factor in enhancing the decision-making capabilities of smart machines. This book provides relevant theoretical frameworks that include basic models, algorithms, circuit designs and the latest developments in experimental aspects in the field of distributed intelligence systems for industrial applications. The challenges encountered in the development of models for distributed intelligence systems for environmental monitoring are mitigated with artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning. This book identifies challenges and helps in applying solutions in the development of advanced intelligent systems for environmental monitoring.

Book excerpt: The book is dedicated to the implementation of different multi-criteria decision-making techniques for various problems concerning planning and operation of the smart grid from the Society 5.0 perspective. It consists of a practical explanation of several multi-criteria approaches and examples of their application to real problems. In this book, the choice of the optimal smart grid strategy in planning and operation is made. Various areas of smart grid problems are analyzed, from the smart grid project efficiency assessment to the electric vehicle charging schedule optimization. The comparison of alternatives is made using different techniques taking into account the presence of multiple criteria of both qualitative and quantitative nature, different performance indicators, and the uncertain environment of the smart grid. The book outlines in clear terms how the electricity grid can be modernized in such a way that it monitors, protects, and automatically optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements, taking into account different stakeholders and criteria and society in general. The book covers various smart grid aspects—from the distributed generator through the medium-voltage network and distribution system, to energy storage installations and to end-use consumers and their thermostats, electric vehicles, appliances, and other household devices. The book serves as a practical guide for researchers, energy and utility professionals, power system planners, regulators, policymakers, and others in the field.
