Book excerpt: In this important contribution to contemporary Romani Studies, Jan Ort focuses his anthropological research on a village in eastern Slovakia with a reputation for the ‘harmonious coexistence’ of its ethnically and linguistically heterogeneous populace. The author offers an ethnographic critique of this idyllic view, showing how historical shifts, as well as the naturalization of inequality and hierarchies, have led to the present situation; however, he also shows examples and methods of subversion and resistance to the village’s current power dynamics. Based primarily on participant observation within Romani families, the author's long-term research results in a fascinating text replete with ethnographic descriptions that allow readers to understand local, experiences, contexts, and divisions. These insights about the village lead to the key question of the book: Who actually is a local?

Humankind currently faces various severe ecological and sociological problems. In On the Culture of Harmony, author Gordon Wang answers the serious and significant question of where human beings are headed in terms of both time and space. Wang traveled across five continents and through dozens of countries searching for answers; now, he shares his results in On the Culture of Harmony. He discusses the origin, concept, and domains of the Culture of Harmony based on an in-depth analysis of the Chinese and world culture and philosophy. He demonstrates how the globalization of economy and information calls for the dominance of the Culture of Harmony, which should be used to correct human bias, establish core values, lead human spirits, and expedite borderless unions. Through a unique perspective of the physical and social sciences, Wang communicates the need to promote a harmonious society through the Culture of Harmony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of Chinese Christian thought in history is based on actual historical events and forsaking the slavish aspect of humanity (the theory of the superiority of Western culture when Western Christianity was introduced to China from the beginning) while this dialectical relationship occurred in the interactive relationship between different events in history and is organically linked. Therefore, this research is an interdisciplinary study including theology, religious thought, comparative theology, history, culture, hermeneutics, philosophy, politics, economics and international relations. As Marx once suggested, there is a kind of national spirit performing in different fields, and this national spirit follows each nation as it enters the stage in history. We will see similar phenomena in the study of Chinese Christianity. It is like the interpretation of the gospel by the Greek culture of the past, the European culture to today's American culture also give an interpretation of the gospel. At the present time, the Chinese people are trying to interpret the gospel from their own culture as well. It, of course, involves the process by which the Chinese find their own role in the gospel of Christ. This is a discovery and in effective action to their own role by the Chinese Christian groups, and becomes an interpretation of Chinese Christianity. This relates to a diachronic trait of human experience, the continuous reflection on the gospel, that correlates episodic and configurative. The fragments of sages from various periods, such as Gützlaff, James Legge, Jing Dianying, Watchman Nee, Francis Wei and T.C. Chao, have become intertextuality in the process. Of course, this is also a configurative and re-configurative. Through the process of time, the trial in the diachronic integrates into a testable interpretation. This interpretation enables Chinese Christian theology to find its identity and its contribution through this status. It also breaks the idol of the superiority of Western culture and subverts the idol of the feudal system in Chinese culture as testimony.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important characteristics of present day ontological research is the growing interest in, and emphasis on, the dynamic aspects of being and the process-relational character of being itself. However, many important questions still await detailed answers. For example, what is the meaning of the concepts of “dynamics,” “dynamicity,” and “dynamic ontology,” among others? Are they identical to, or similar with, respectively, “processes,” “process ontology,” “process-relational ontology”? Is “process ontology” a type of “dynamic ontology”? Dynamic Being: Essays in Process-Relational Ontology examines these and many other questions, and suggests fruitful approaches in dealing with such questions. The book carries out two main tasks: first, investigating developments in the theory of dynamic and process-relational ontologies, and, second, exploring developments in the application of these ontologies. The second task is multidisciplinary in character. The authors of the chapters in this volume are specialists not only in philosophy, but also in other fields of science, including psychology, biology, mathematics, logic, and computer science, their work providing a “seed-bed” of novel possibilities for cooperative interdisciplinary research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an important new perspective on the Western tradition of musical aesthetics through an examination of Anicius Boethius and Immanuel Kant. Within the trajectory illuminated by these two thinkers, musical meaning is framed by and formed through the concept of beauty--a concept which is shaped by prior understandings about notions of the self and the world. Beauty opens up a space within which the boundary between the self and the world, subject and object, is negotiated and configured. In doing so, either the subject or the object is asserted to the detriment of the other, and to the physicality of music. This book asserts that the uniqueness of music's ontology emerges from its basis in sound and embodied practice. It suggests that musical beauty is generated by the mutuality of subject and object arising within the participation that music encourages, one which involves an ekstatic mode of attention on the part of the subject.

Book excerpt: "If one can be balanced and harmonious in oneself, then the being that is fundamentally so is clear and aware, awake in quietude, accurate in action; thus one can respond to the less changes in the world." The Book of Balance and Harmony is a classic thirteenth-century anthology of Taoist writings, including essays, conversations, poetry, and songs from the School of Complete Reality. The writings combine the essences of Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism into an alchemical elixir teaching Vitality, Energy, and Spirit -- the "three treasures" of Taoism that promise mental and physical well-being. This first translation into English of a major text of Taoism is rered and introduced by Thomas Cleary, who has been called the premier translator of Buddhist and Taoist texts. Among his many published works are original translations of monuments of Oriental spirituality, such as The Flower Ornament Scripture, the most sophisticated and comprehensive of primary Buddhist sourcebooks; The Blue Cliff Record, one of the major literary classics of Zen Buddhism; and Understanding Reality, the definitive classic of Taoist spiritual alchemy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jonathan Edwards lived in an age in which the doctrine of the Trinity was sometimes openly repudiated and more often quietly ignored. But as this important book shows, Edwards in fact took care to creatively fashion the Trinity into the centerpiece of his Christian life and work. Through her pursuit of Edwards's writings, especially his lifelong intellectual diary, Amy Plantinga Pauw traces the way Edwards established the basic outlines of his trinitarian thought when he was only twenty years old, and how the doctrine continued to run like a subterranean river throughout his famed career as a pastor and teacher. Recognizing the centrality of the Trinity in Edwards's thought both nuances our understanding of his Puritan inheritance and challenges the narrowness of Edwards's enduring legacy as the preacher of "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God."

In easily-digested 'lessons' Prof. Srića gives fifty-two examples explaining in detail how each of us can develop internal harmony, and how to build and develop harmonious teams and organizations. Prof. Srića finds the source of today's global chaos in the lack of leadership in politics and business, and he explains why the current paradigm is exhausted. The first pages are valuable in their own right, as they present an ice-bath of cold facts that will wake up anyone who doubts that change is urgently needed.

Book excerpt: An exploration of musical harmony from its ancient fundamentals to its most complex modern progressions, addressing how and why it resonates emotionally and spiritually in the individual. W. A. Mathieu, an accomplished author and recording artist, presents a way of learning music that reconnects modern-day musicians with the source from which music was originally generated. As the author states, "The rules of music--including counterpoint and harmony--were not formed in our brains but in the resonance chambers of our bodies." His theory of music reconciles the ancient harmonic system of just intonation with the modern system of twelve-tone temperament. Saying that the way we think music is far from the way we do music, Mathieu explains why certain combinations of sounds are experienced by the listener as harmonious. His prose often resembles the rhythms and cadences of music itself, and his many musical examples allow readers to discover their own musical responses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy, Religion, and the Question off Intolerance is a diverse collection of essays united by a common starting point and theme -- the awareness that intolerance is a phenomenon encountered in diverse places and circumstances and often handled with limited success. The question of toleration, together with its cultural, social, religious, and philosophical implications, are addressed by leading authorities who offer insights from an interdisciplinary perspective. The book begins with essays by three distinguished scholars, Robert Cummings Neville, J. B. Schneewind, and John McCumber. They assess the origins of intolerance, the genesis of our concept of toleration, and the outlook for the practice of tolerance in contemporary society. Beyond the opening essays, the collection is divided into three sections. The first concentrates on the relationship of religious faith and practice to toleration and inquires how religion might either impede or promote toleration. The second section deals primarily with questions regarding tolerance in the face of modern political realities. The final section discusses ethics, namely the philosophical analysis and definition of toleration as a virtue.
