Book excerpt: In this book is presented the preparation of Tellurium and Tellurium oxide thin films by cold spray process on different substrates at different deposition angles using helium gas as cold spray process and powder carrier gas without employing any catalyst. Characterization of the prepared thin films by X- ray diffraction analysis (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in addition to Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The thin films exhibited a high transmission rate, which allows the products to have potential applications in transparent devices. Thus, the thin films demonstrated their potential application in low power consumption device for Ammonia gas sensor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas sensor technology has advanced remarkably during past few decades and has become one of the indispensable technologies for modern society. Varieties of gas sensors are commercially available and, using innovative ideas, efforts are being made to develop gas sensors of next generation having very small size with very low power consumption. The ultimate model for this is probably given by sensory organs of our own body, which are implanted finely and work well with a very modest amount of energy. In order to achieve this goal, it is essential that various aspects of gas sensors are seriously considered. These include understanding of gas sensing mechanisms, development of new materials and methods to synthesise them into selective sensors, innovations in nanostructured materials, measurement methods, microfabrication of sensors, exploring intelligent sensing system, etc. This book examines these issues pertaining to chemiresistive gas sensors.

Book excerpt: The second edition of this book focuses on the synthesis, design, and application of semiconducting metal oxides as gas sensing materials, including the gas sensing mechanism, and modification methods for sensing materials, while also providing a comprehensive introduction to semiconductor gas sensing devices. As an essential part of IoT (Internet of things), gas sensors have shown great significance and promising prospects. Therefore, studies on functional mesoporous metal oxides, one of the most important gas sensing materials based on their unique Knudsen diffusion behavior and tailored pore structure, have increasingly attracted attention from various disciplines. The book offers a valuable reference guide to metal oxide gas sensing materials for undergraduate and graduate students alike. It will also benefit all researchers who are involved in synthesis and gas sensing of metal oxides nanomaterials with relevant frontier theories and concepts. Engineers working on research and development of semiconductor gas sensors will also find some new ideas for sensor design.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, a systematic study involving the fabrication of thin film SnO2 gas sensors by sol-gel technique had been carried out. The sol solution of SnO2 was prepared by chemical synthesis process. Tin tetrachloride and sodium ethoxide were used as the fundamental reactants. The synthesis sol had been coated on the glass substrate by spin coating technique to form thin films. The coated films were then subjected to anneal at 550 C for 1 hour to change their structure to SnO2. It was found that the thickness of SnO2 films could be linearly controlled by varying the number of coatings. The thickness of each coating was about 350 A. In order to analyze the gas sensing performance quantitatively, a novel gas measuring circuit was proposed. This circuit could be used to calculate sensitivity and recovery time without depending on the external circuit components such as resistance. The performance of this proposed circuit had been compared with that of the conventional circuit in both theoretical and experiment aspects. The results indicated the conventional measuring circuit is not suitable for calculating gas sensitivity in the case which a semiconductor gas sensor under test has a nonlinear I-V characteristic. For the proposed sircuit, this nonlinear property did not cause any problem in calculating sensitivity. Moreover, the gas sensing performance of various gas sensors could be compared quantitatively if the bias voltage of all gas sensors were set to the same value. The characterization of the fabricating gas sensors had been performed on a flow injection system combining with the proposed measuring circuit. The sensitivity of gas sensor had been found to be strongly dependent on the film thickness. The experiments showed that the optimum thickness was about 1000 A. From the gas response tests to alcohol and ammonia solutions, it was found that the unmodified SnO2 gas sensor gave the highest sensitivity. The addition of some modified substances such as CuSO4, AgNO3 and Au reduced the gas sensitivity. However, there was a tendency to increase sensitivity by adding FeCl3. By using the power law model to analyze the change of sensitivity with sample concentration, it was found that the unmodified SnO2 gas sensor could be used to detect alcohol and ammonia in the range of 0.08-10 and 0.05-10% by volume respectively. The optimum operating temperature was 250 C for alcohol detection and 350 C ammonia detection.

Book excerpt: The author provides a unified account of the electrochemical material science of metal chalcogenide (MCh) compounds and alloys with regard to their synthesis, processing and applications. Starting with the chemical fundamentals of the chalcogens and their major compounds, the initial part of the book includes a systematic description of the MCh solids on the basis of the Periodic Table in terms of their structures and key properties. This is followed by a general discussion on the electrochemistry of chalcogen species, and the principles underlying the electrochemical formation of inorganic compounds/alloys. The core of the book offers an insight into available experimental results and inferences regarding the electrochemical preparation and microstructural control of conventional and novel MCh structures. It also aims to survey their photoelectrochemistry, both from a material-oriented point of view and as connected to specific processes such as photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. Finally, the book illustrates the relevance of MCh materials to various applications of electrochemical interest such as (electro)catalysis in fuel cells, energy storage with intercalation electrodes, and ion sensing.
