These aggregates are an interesting material, posing potential applications in the fields of chemistry, biology and materials science. This study examined the dependence of aggregate size and morphology on temperature of formation, using AFM and TEM imaging. The aggregates formed at 70°C averaged 105nm in width, as compared to 70nm for the room temperature aggregates. The TEM images showed increased density for the 70°C aggregates. In a further study, the room temperature aggregates were functionalized through a place exchange reaction with 1 -mercapto-undecane- l-sodiumsulfonate (MUS), a thiolated ligand with a polar head group. A two-phase test of the water-solubility indicated that the aggregates were fully soluble. TEM images showed a slight increase in size, though similar morphology to the insoluble aggregates. The ability to induce water solubility in the aggregates opens up many potential applications in the field of bionanomaterials.

Book excerpt: We report a simple and efficient synthetic method to prepare gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in aqueous phase using HAuCl4 and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) ligands appended with bidentate anchoring groups. Our approach provides narrow size distribution nanocrystals over the size range between 1.5 and 18 nm; this range is much wider than those achieved using other small molecules and polymer ligands. The NP size was simply controlled by varying the molar ratio of Au-to-PEG ligand precursors. Further passivation of the as-prepared AuNPs permitted in situ functionalization of the NP surface with the desired functional groups. The prepared AuNPs exhibit remarkable stability in the presence of high salt concentrations, over a wide range of pHs (2-13), and a strong resistance to competition from dithiothreitol (DTT). These results are a clear manifestation of the advantages offered by our synthetic approach to prepare biocompatible AuNPs, where modular, multifunctional ligands presenting strong anchoring groups and hydrophilic PEG chains are used.

Book excerpt: Gold, considered catalytically inactive for a long time, is now a fascinating partner of modern chemistry, as scientists such as Bond, Teles, Haruta, Hutchings, Ito and Hayashi opened new perspectives for the whole synthetic chemist community. Recently gold has attracted significant attention due to its advantageous characteristics as a catalytic material and since it allows easy functionalization with biologically active molecules. In this context, when gold is prepared as very small particles, it turns out to be a highly active catalyst. However, such a phenomenon completely disappears when the gold particle size grows into the micrometer range. Therefore, the preparation for obtaining an active gold catalyst is so important. The primary objective of this book is to provide a comprehensive overview of gold metal nanoparticles and their application as promising catalysts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gold nanoparticles that can generate surface plasmons under appropriate conditions have attracted significant interest for their potential in optics, photonics, data storage and biological sensors. Developing high fidelity fabrication methods that yield gold nanoparticles with well-defined size, shape, composition and self-assembly allows manipulation of surface plasmonic properties for novel applications as well as revealing new aspects of the underlying science. This dissertation demonstrates multiple techniques that describe cost-effective "bottom-up" fabrication methods that yield gold nano-superstructures. In my initial work, I outline the solution conditions for fabricating Janus nanoparticles composed of one gold nanoparticle per micelle. Poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS) was synthesized and processed into spherical micelles, which served as the template to induce gold nanoparticles growth within the PEO corona in situ. Organic-inorganic hybrid nanoparticle formation was controlled kinetically by manipulating the concentration of both the micelle and reducing agent (HEPES). We also found that under certain condition, PEO-b-PS yielded micelles with pearl-like morphology, which possessed concentrated PEO domains at the interface between two adjacent PS cores. Careful manipulation of reaction conditions afforded gold nanoparticles that grew from the core-shell interface to form 1-dimensional (1-D) periodical gold nanoparticle chains. Based on similar principles, gold-gold dimers were synthesized by growing a second gold nanoparticle from a gold nanoparticle template surface-functionalized with PEO ligands. Gold dimers fabricated with this method exhibited strong enhancement properties via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Instead of kinetic control, the number of newly grown gold nanoparticles on each particle template heavily relied on the PEO density on the nanoparticle template. As the size of the particle template increased from 10 nm to 48 nm, the corresponding number of PEO chains on each particle was estimated to increase proportionally from 6 to 140. Consequently, the structure of the final products could be manipulated from gold dimer to raspberry-like structures. The third part of my work demonstrated the fabrication of 2-dimensional (2-D) gold nanoparticle arrays using peptide-derivatized block copolymer thin film templates. A triblock polystyrene-b-poly(methyl methacrylate)-b-A3 peptide (PS-b-PMMA-A3) was synthesized and processed into thin film with highly-ordered surface patterns via cold zone annealing (CZA). Gold nanoparticles were selectively immobilized onto PMMA domains due to the binding affinity of A3 peptide located at the PMMA chain end. Gold nanoparticle structures such as hexagonally-packed gold nanoparticle clusters and parallel gold nanoparticle wires have been achieved using this method. GISAXS results indicate that the hexagonal gold-hierarchical structure is constituted of two different structures: a primary structure induced by nanofeatures on the thin film template and a secondary structure formed through gold nanoparticle packing within each cluster domain. Selectivity of the thin film template to gold nanoparticles and the nanoparticle aggregation are two competing phenomena that affect resolution of the hierarchical structures.
