Traditionally, glass is not desired for applications involving a low weight material while preserving high strength such as aerospace and military applications where armor must also be transparent. Some applications may include aircraft canopies and other vehicle windows. Development of a reliable transparent composite would fill a need for many of these applications where a transparent structure must both be strong and lightweight. A transparent polymer reinforced with a glass fiber fabric is a viable solution. To ensure transparency, both fiber and matrix must match in refractive index. In the present work, transparent composites are manufactured using two vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) processes. An E-glass fiber fabric is used as reinforcements and an epoxy-based resin developed at the Missouri University of Science & Technology is used as the matrix. In the VARTM process, the glass fiber preform is placed between two molds for part quality and the mold is sealed with a vacuum bag. Resin is drawn into the mold by a combination of a vacuum and atmospheric pressure to infuse the preform and the part is cured. A second, yet similar VARTM process has been developed to decrease void content and increase transparency of the composite panels through the elimination of air bubbles concentrated at the initial stages of infusion"--Abstract, page iii.

However, glass is not suitable where low weight and high strength are required. For many applications there exists a need for mechanically strong composite materials of high optical quality and transparency equivalent to window glass. Glass fiber reinforced transparent composite is a viable solution. Transparency is maintained by precisely matching the refractive index of the matrix with that of the glass fiber. Aircraft canopies and transparent armor can be potential applications for this new class of materials. In the present work, transparent composites are manufactured using vacuum infusion process. Both rectangular glass ribbons and circular glass fibers are used as reinforcements. The rectangular ribbons scatter less light under any condition, but are more expensive than the circular fibers. A proprietary resin developed at the Missouri S & T is used as the matrix. In vacuum infusion, the glass fiber preform is placed into a one-sided mold and the mold is vacuum sealed with a flexible bag. Resin is then drawn into the mold by vacuum pressure to impregnate the preform. The cured part was tested for optical clarity, tensile and flexural properties, fiber volume fraction, and impact resistance. These tests show that the transparent composites posses good mechanical properties. The experimental results are compared with the finite element solution and are in good agreement"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book excerpt: Composite materials are lightweight and strong, providing a winning combination that propels composites to new areas of respect in the manufacturing industry. Manufacturers are attempting to find more applications where composites can be used. For instance, composite materials are being looked at for use as replacements for conventional materials in high-temperature applications. Traditionally, hand lay-up prepreg/autoclave techniques have been used to fabricate polymeric composites for applications that require high-temperature resistance. Yet, high manufacturing costs have limited their usage. In recent years, vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) has proven to be an affordable process for manufacturing large composite structures, when compared to conventional RTM and hand lay-up prepreg/autoclave techniques. Manufacturing high-quality, large composite parts for high temperature applications using VARTM technique will significantly reduce costs due to low cost tooling, flexible part integration and larger part dimension.

Book excerpt: "New resin systems have enabled composites to be considered as attractive alternatives in structural applications that require material to be stronger, lighter and/or more resilient to environmental effects. The current work is on the development of processes to produce continuous fiber reinforced materials from two state of the art resin systems. Two processes were developed to produce continuous fiber reinforced ceramic materials from a preceramic polymer. The first was a vacuum forming process developed using the out-of-autoclave polymer composite manufacturing technique in conjunction with the polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process to produce ceramic composite material of zirconium diboride-silicon carbide reinforced with continuous silicon carbide fibers for use in ultra high temperature applications. A second process was developed using the dry press ceramic manufacturing technique in conjunction with the polymer infiltration and pyrolysis process to produce ceramic composite material of silicon carbide reinforced with continuous silicon carbide fibers for use in high temperature nuclear applications. The materials from these two processes were characterized using microstructure analysis techniques and standardized mechanical testing. The third process produced a polymer reinforced composite from novel thermoset polyurethane. A vacuum assisted resin transfer molding technique was used to produce a composite material from a new two-part polyurethane resin infused into plane weave E-glass fiber mats. The effects on the microstructure and the impact behavior of thermoset polyurethane composite material, exposed to an accelerated UV-aging environment, were assessed. The work performed provides valuable information with respect to the processing of continuous fiber reinforced composites using new materials and processes"--Abstract, page iv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epoxy resins are polymers which are extensively used as coating materials due to their outstanding mechanical properties and good handling characteristics. A disadvantage results from their high cross-link density: they are brittle and have very low resistance to crack growth and propagation. This necessitates the toughening of the epoxy matrix without impairing its good thermomechanical properties. The final properties of the polymer depend on their structure. The book focuses on the microstructural aspects in the modification of epoxy resins with low molecular weight liquid rubbers, one of the prime toughening agents commonly employed. The book follows thoroughly the reactions of elastomer-modified epoxy resins from their liquid stage to the network formation. It gives an in-depth view into the cure reaction, phase separation and the simultaneous development of the morphology. Chapters on ageing, failure analysis and life cycle analysis round out the book.

Book excerpt: Sunrez Corporation has refined the LS-Process, an improved VARTM (Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) process for the fabrication of large scale composite parts and ships. Sunrez has conceived and demonstrated the LS-Process which eliminates all of the under bag flow media usually associated with current VARTM processes. The currently used VARTM processes require an inordinate amount of "under the bag" resin distribution media and tubes and excess resin, which are thrown away after the part is fabricated creating higher material and labor costs. The LS-Process lowers costs with respect to labor and materials and has no under the bag resin distribution media. Sunrez has developed the LS VARTM Process to meets these requirements and is very low cost. In Phase I of this program, the LS VARTM Process was further developed and demonstration parts made which have shown the viability of this process to meet all of the Navy requirements for this program.
