Book excerpt: As the field of nanotechnology continues to advance and device feature sizes scale down to ever smaller dimensions, it is becoming increasingly important to develop quick and efficient methods for large-scale production at the nanoscale. Creating such a template would have widespread uses in areas such as magnetic data storage, chemical sensors, and mask technology. One promising approach to realizing this goal may lie in utilizing the self-ordering behavior found in porous anodized aluminum oxide (AAO). This material offers many advantages such as the ability to customize the pore diameter and spacing and easy device integration based on its compatibility with silicon substrates. The pores of the AAO templates can be filled with many different materials via electrochemical deposition or other methods to produce numerous potential devices. In this work, current research results detailing the fabrication of AAO templates and their use in creating ~100 nm tall CoPt, Ni, and composite Ni/CoPt nanowires is demonstrated. The synthesis of such nanostructures may ultimately be advantageous for new types of patterned magnetic recording media. The Ni nanowires exhibit relatively soft magnetic coercivity of 242 Oe, while the CoPt nanowires show a very high coercivity of at least 10.97 kOe, measured in the perpendicular direction along the nanowires axis. The composite soft magnet / hard magnet Ni/CoPt nanowires exhibit intermediate perpendicular coercivities depending on the relative amounts of Ni and CoPt. The Ni80nm / CoPt20nm nanowires showed a coercivity of 1.96 kOe, the Ni50nm / CoPt50nm nanowires had a coercivity of 3.59 kOe, and the Ni20nm / CoPt80nm nanowires had a coercivity of 5.10 kOe. This marked decrease in the coercivity is significant because it could facilitate easier magnetic data writing. Analysis of the magnetic properties of the various nanowire structures and their dependence on the processing parameters is presented. A method for utilizing the AAO structure to replicate a master stamp for nanoimprinting technology is also discussed. In addition, plans for future work and a discussion of the application of these fabricated structures towards magnetic recording technology are presented.

We wish to produce a two-dimensional array of crystalline Si(c-Si) quantum dots or boxes surrounded by a hydrogenated amorphous Si(a-Si:H) matrix. The quantum dots are to be defined spatially using the protein crystal masking technique described in our research grant and which we now briefly summarize. This nanofabrication technique is implemented using two-dimensional crystalline protein monolayers which are deposited on a substrate, metal shadowed at oblique incidence with an ultrathin (approx. 1 nm) titanium film, and then ion milled at normal incidence. During milling the metal film is reconfigured through a combination of sputtering and surface diffusion leaving a periodically nanostructured, ultrathin metal(oxide) film. Moreover, we have found that this nanostructured screen acts as a mask for the pattern transfer of a periodic array of holes or etch pits to the underlying substrate, which in the present case is silicon. jg p3.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to synthesize and characterize the nanoporous structures that can be obtained by the anodization of thin film aluminum sputter deposited on a silicon wafer substrate. This study also investigated the application of nanoporous alumina to fabricate nanorod arrays by using preceramic polymers. Although there are many studies on the effect of anodizing conditions on anodized alumina, there are a few studies on anodizing of thin film aluminum. Anodized thin films of aluminum supported on silicon could have several applications that involve integrating the nanoporous structures into chemical and biological sensors and as templates for creating hierarchically complex nanostructures that are integrated with microelectronic circuits. In this study the different attributes of anodizing parameters in the synthesis of nanoporous structures on thin film aluminum compared to the results of studies on aluminum bulk is investigated. These differences can be due to attributes of the material, the resistance of the substrate and the reactions of substrate during anodizing. In this study the effects of different anodizing parameters and the contribution of each parameter were investigated using statistical approaches for quantification of pore sizes, their distributions and pore densities. This approach has never been previously used for studying the aluminum anodization. Until now, studies have always been based on average of the structure parameters with the hypothesis of homogeneity and uniformity of the structure which is not the case for anodization of thin film aluminum. To investigate the relative effect of each parameter, the Taguchi method and signal-to-noise calculation were applied. A new fabrication method for making nanorod arrays was introduced. In this method, nanoporous alumina was used as a casting mold for being filled by a preceramic polymer. KDT Ceraset polysilazane 20 (PSZ) and KDT Ceraset polyureasilazane (PUSZ) were two preceramic polymers which were selected for this purpose. To understand the changes in the chemical structure during the different steps of curing process of these preceramic polymers and also to find a better process for fabrication of nanorod arrays, the effect of curing conditions on these preceramic polymers were investigated.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, bulk nanostructured materials processed by methods of severe plastic deformation (SPD) have attracted the growing interest in academia and industry. This interest is caused not only by unique physical and mechanical properties inherent to various nanostructured materials, e.g., higher hardness and Young's modulus, etc, but also by the ability of SPD process to create bulk nanostructures. In this dissertation work, air blast shot peening (ABSP) a SPD process using very high shot velocities was used to achieve high strain rates of surface material causing bulk surface nanocrystallization. ABSP process parameters has been extensively investigated to understand their effects on bulk nanostructures formed on steel (AISI 1018, AISI 1045, AISI 1075) and aluminum (Al 6061, Al 7075) components. Finite element simulations have also been carried out to study the effect of peening parameters on stress/strains and temperatures in the peened component. The peened samples have been characterized using optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and the grain size shows a gradual reduction from the subsurface to the surface. The grain size of the steel and aluminum peened samples based on the TEM images was less than 50 nm. The nanocrystalline (NC) zone showed a considerably higher hardness as compared to the unpeened material. Lastly a study of corrosion characteristics of the NC layers fabricated on steel and aluminum alloys indicated a higher corrosion potential of the NC layers as compared to the bulk material.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation proposed to initiate the research into the fabrication of metal/oxide nanostructures by anodization process for biosensor, drug delivery and supercapacitor applications by producing different nanostructures which lead to the potential for various applications. This study focuses on the establishment of the knowledge and techniques necessary to perform metal/oxide nanostructures on biological and energy applications. This study will investigate: (1) the sensor and drug delivery applications of micro/nano structures; (2) novel processes to innovate anodic aluminum oxide nanotube template; (3) the supercapacitor applications of anodic titanium oxide. First, the extremely high surface area AAO coated microneedle and microneedle array can be developed as sensor and drug delivery devices. Due to the large surface area of the AAO, the film can absorb indicators to make it sensitive to testing targets. pH detection was demonstrated to show the sensing capability of the microneedle. Then, the microneedles were further built as an array by combining micromachining technique. The microneedle array provides a 3-D structure that possesses several hundred times more surface area and capacity than a traditional nanochannel template. Second, the nanoengineering process was conducted to innovate anodic aluminum oxide nanotube template. Guided anodization assisted by nanoimprint process formed AAO arrays that can be formed on controlled locations. More importantly, it shows the periodically ordered AAO array with different sizes of nanopores. With the improved AAO template, melting injection, electro/electroless deposition and sol-gel deposition were conducted to fabricate Ni nanowires/ TiO2 nanotubes, Ni/BaTiO3 core-shell nanotubes, and UHMWPE nanotubes. Third, various Ti-based alloys were anodized to form ordered nanotubes for supercapacitor application. Ti alloy oxide contains some porous layers which are not presented on TiO2 nanotube film. Thus, Ti alloys anodized oxide nanotubes have better supercapacitor behaviors than the conventional TiO2 nanotubes. However, a high surface area nanoporous Ti/TiO2 structure, which was fabricated by selective etching process, can accumulate large quantity of electrons and energy for supercapacitor needs. Additionally, nanoporous metals obtained by dealloying hold a unique combination of a highly conductive network and a bicontinuous open. The characteristics formed through dealloying also present a nice charge/discharge behavior and a good capacitance performance. Book excerpt: In this book, the history of the concepts critical to the discovery and development of aluminum, its alloys and the anodizing process are reviewed to provide a foundation for the challenges, achievements, and understanding of the complex relationship between the aluminum alloy and the reactions that occur during anodic oxidation. Empirical knowledge that has long sustained industrial anodizing is clarified by viewing the process as corrosion science, addressing each element of the anodizing circuit in terms of the Tafel Equation. This innovative approach enables a new level of understanding and engineering control for the mechanisms that occur as the oxide nucleates and grows, developing its characteristic highly ordered structure, which impact the practical function of the anodic aluminum oxide.
