AlGaN/GaN based HEMTs were used to detect kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1), an important biomarker for early kidney injury detection. The HEMT gate region was coated with KIM-1 antibodies and the HEMT source-drain current showed a clear dependence on the KIM-1 concentration in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution. The limit of detection (LOD) was 1ng/ml using a 20 micron by 50 micron gate sensing area. This approach shows a potential for both preclinical and clinical disease diagnosis with accurate, rapid, noninvasive, and high throughput capabilities. The rest of this dissertation includes ZnO band edge electroluminescence from N- implanted ZnO bulk, and the investigation of cryogenic gold Schottky contact on GaAs for enhancing device thermal stability.

Book excerpt: The sensors and sensors arrays are also used in medical applications, automotive and process control. In general, sensors provide an interface between the electronic equipment and the physical world typically by converting non electrical of physical or chemical quantities into electrical signals. Recently, gas sensors based on the semiconducting metal-oxides (they also are known as resistive or chemoresistive sensors) such as tin dioxide, zinc oxide and tungsten trioxide were found to be very useful for detecting the toxic, harmful and hydrocarbons gases The main objective of this monograph is the application of Cr doped ZnO thin film for gas sensors applications.

As streptavidin was introduced to the biotin-functionalized gate region, the drain-source current showed a clear decrease of 4 [mu]A, which shows interaction between antibody and antigen. A Schottky diode was fabricated on a ZnO thin film and showed higher sensitivity to hydrogen (5 ppm). A single ZnO nanorod FET-based sensor was also demonstrated. Conductivity of the single nanorod sensor decreased linearly when the pH value of the solution varied from 2 to 12. The measured sensitivity was 8.5 nS/pH in the dark and 20 nS/pH under UV (365 nm) illumination, showing tremendous potential for sensing applications.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biosensor field is rapidly accelerating in recent years. Among many types of biosensors available today, piezoelectric (PZT) class of materials are becoming very popular. In this thesis, Zinc Oxide nanowire PZT biosensor was fabricated and characterized to detect the presence of fungi which has some huge economic implications in US agriculture industry. Zinc Oxide nanowires were synthesized in a mass scale via wet solution method in a controlled temperature and growth environment. Different substrates including glass, indium tin oxide, and gold coated silicon substrates were utilized to grow the nanowires followed by layering with silane and subsequently etching them. The results show that the nanowires were grown homogenously on gold coated silicon wafers with cylindrical structures. The ideal morphology of the nanowires was found to be dependent on: incubation time, incubation temperature, and substrate material. Substrate catalyst was also varied from Au & Pd to pure Au which showed significant improvement in producing the nanowires. A systematic variation of hours was implemented from: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13 hours. Zinc Oxide nanowire features such as length, diameter, and aspect ratio were quantified through SEM micrographs. Linear increase in height, diameter, and aspect ratio was observed up to 13 hours along with density. The optimal condition for nanowire growth was determined at: 80 °C and 5 hours. Energy dispersive spectroscopy aided in generating presence of specific elements on the biosensor. Raman helps in verifying chemical composition of the device. Both Raman and EDS spectroscopy aided in enhancement and individualization of the biosensor at different proposed parameters. Keithley readings represented series of current-voltage (I-V) measurements under different forward biased voltages. The response of nanowires from these I-V measurements show a diode-like response. Next, nanowire displacement patterns of fungi, Fusarium proliferatum (F. proliferatum) were studied by I-V measurements. When I-V measurements were conducted on PZT nanowires in the presence of F. proliferatum a strong association from microbe attachment and growth was observed showing an increase in switch-on voltage with a 2V sweep. It is speculated that the observed high resistance is a result of mechanical movement of fungi on the piezoelectric device. Future studies will be designed to investigate this phenomenon. These results indicate that by simply reading the characteristic current-voltage measurement, one can better evaluate microbe pattern of displacement and maturation. Future application of this nanowire platform can characterize distinct displacement signature of disease carrying organism much more efficiently.

This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study concerns gas sensors that may protect individuals by detecting hazardous gases that may be generated in hot spaces (≥50°C) with residues of organic waste. We investigated the responses and selectivities of the sensors to different kinds of hazardous gases such as acetaldehyde, toluene and hydrogen sulfide. We also investigated operating temperatures and catalysts for the sensors. The thick film semiconductor sensors that detected some hazardous gases were prepared using nano-sized sensing material powders (SnO2, WO3, ZnO) that were prepared through sol-gel and precipitation methods. The nano-sized sensing materials were blended with various amounts of metal oxides (SnO2, ZnO, WO3) and coated with transition metals (Pt, Pd, Ru, Au, Ag, Cu and In). The metal oxide thick films were fabricated on an Al2O3 plate with a Ni-Cr heater and a Pt electrode through a screen-printing method. Morphologies, compositions, phases, surface areas and particle sizes of sensor compounds were examined by SEM, EDS, XRD and BET analysis. The investigated response to the various hazardous vapors was expressed as the value of Ra/Rg, where Ra and Rg are the resistance of the sensor material in the air and in hazardous gas, respectively.
