Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to integrated optical waveguides for information technology and data communications. Integrated coverage ranges from advanced materials, fabrication, and characterization techniques to guidelines for design and simulation. A concluding chapter offers perspectives on likely future trends and challenges. The dramatic scaling down of feature sizes has driven exponential improvements in semiconductor productivity and performance in the past several decades. However, with the potential of gigascale integration, size reduction is approaching a physical limitation due to the negative impact on resistance and inductance of metal interconnects with current copper-trace based technology. Integrated optics provides a potentially lower-cost, higher performance alternative to electronics in optical communication systems. Optical interconnects, in which light can be generated, guided, modulated, amplified, and detected, can provide greater bandwidth, lower power consumption, decreased interconnect delays, resistance to electromagnetic interference, and reduced crosstalk when integrated into standard electronic circuits. Integrated waveguide optics represents a truly multidisciplinary field of science and engineering, with continued growth requiring new developments in modeling, further advances in materials science, and innovations in integration platforms. In addition, the processing and fabrication of these new devices must be optimized in conjunction with the development of accurate and precise characterization and testing methods. Students and professionals in materials science and engineering will find Advanced Materials for Integrated Optical Waveguides to be an invaluable reference for meeting these research and development goals.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the detailed investigation of stress-induced birefringence in polymer optical waveguides and demonstrates an approach for the potential design of polarization-insensitive waveguide devices considering such stress-effects. To estimate the stresses accurately, it presents a process-modeling framework in the Finite Element analysis, which can incorporate important stress build-up processes, such as polymerization shrinkage, stress relaxation, and etching, over the entire history of the waveguide fabrication process. It also presents the characterization of the stress-optic and thermo-optic coefficients of polymers in thin film waveguide. Being generic in nature, the described approach enables the optimized design of various integrated optical devices from the standpoint of material systems, waveguide geometry, and process parameters. This book is expected to lay the groundwork for the researchers on the management of stress related problems in integrated optical devices and photonic packaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various methods exist for fabrication of micron and submicron sized waveguide structures. However, most of them include expensive and time consuming semiconductor fabrication techniques. An economical method for fabricating waveguide structures is introduced and demonstrated in this thesis. This method is established based on previously well-developed photonic crystal fabrication method called two-polymer microtransfer molding. The waveguide in this work functions by a coupler structure that diffracts the incident light into submicron polymer rods. The light is then guided through the rods. Characterization is done by collecting the light that has been guided through the waveguide and exits the end of these submicron polymer bars. The coupling and waveguiding capabilities are demonstrated using two light sources, a laser and white light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the design and development of SU-8 polymer and silicon waveguide-based devices using the effective index based matrix method. Various fabrication techniques like laser direct writing (LDW), Focused Ion Beam (FIB) and optical lithography are discussed. FIB lithography has been explored for photonic-crystal structures on the waveguide and for directional coupler in coupled region. This technique is shown to be suitable in fabricating photonic crystal structures as well as for making any precise modifications in micro- and nano-meter photonic waveguide structures. This book can be a useful reference for students, researchers, and fabrication engineers working in the areas of integrated optics, optical communications, laser technology and optical lithography for device manufacturing.
