Book excerpt: The commercially available solar cells suffer from low conversion efficiency due to the thermalization and transmission losses arising from the mismatch between the band gap of the semiconductor materials and the solar spectrum. Advanced device architectures based on nanomaterial have been proposed and being successfully used to enhance the efficiency of the solar cells. Quantum dots (QDs) and nanowires (NWs) are the nanosclae structures that have been exploited for the development of the third generation solar cell devices and nanowire based solar cells, respectively. The optical and electrical properties of these materials can be tuned by their size and geometry; hence they have great potential for the production of highly efficient solar cell. Application of QDs and NWs with enhanced optoelectronic properties and development of low-cost fabrication processes render a new generation of economic highly efficient PV devices. The most significant contribution of this PhD study is the development of simple and cost effective methods for fabrication of nanowires and quantum dots for advanced solar cell architectures. In advanced silicon nanowires (SiNWs) array cell, SiNWs have been widely synthesised by the well-known vapor-liquid-solid method. Electron beam lithography and deep reactive ion etching have also been employed for fabrication of SiNWs. Due to the high price and complexity of these methods, simple and cost effective approaches are needed for the fabrication of SiNWs. In another approach, to enhance the cell efficiency, organic dyes and polymers have been widely used as luminescent centers and host mediums in the luminescent down shifting (LDS) layers. However, due to the narrow absorption band of the dyes and degradation of the polymers by moisture and heat, these materials are not promising candidates to use as LDS. Highly efficient luminescent materials and transparent host materials with stable mechanical properties are demanded for luminescent down shifting applications. In this project, simple fabrication processes were developed to produce SiNWs and QDs for application in advanced cell architectures.

Book excerpt: When I was contacted by Kluwer Academic Publishers in the Fall of 200 I, inviting me to edit a volume of papers on the issue of electron transport in quantum dots, I was excited by what I saw as an ideal opportunity to provide an overview of a field of research that has made significant contributions in recent years, both to our understanding of fundamental physics, and to the development of novel nanoelectronic technologies. The need for such a volume seemed to be made more pressing by the fact that few comprehensive reviews of this topic have appeared in the literature, in spite of the vast activity in this area over the course of the last decade or so. With this motivation, I set out to try to compile a volume that would fairly reflect the wide range of opinions that has emerged in the study of electron transport in quantum dots. Indeed, there has been no effort on my part to ensure any consistency between the different chapters, since I would prefer that this volume instead serve as a useful forum for the debate of critical issues in this still developing field. In this matter, I have been assisted greatly by the excellent series of articles provided by the different authors, who are widely recognized as some of the leaders in this vital area of research.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current developments in optical devices are being directed toward nanocrystals based devices, where photons are manipulated using nanoscale optical phenomenon. Nanochemistry is a powerful tool for making nanostructures based on such nanocrystals. In this dissertation, various applications such as photodetectors/photovoltaics, photonic crystals and plasmonic applications involving nanoparticles and organic: inorganic hybrid systems have been investigated. The hall marks of quantum dots are well defined excitonic absorption and sharp emission profiles and their unique behavior comprises intense and immune to photobleaching luminescence, photon upconversion, slow exciton relaxation, multiexciton generation due to impact ionization, enhanced lasing, etc. Various quantum dots such as Indium Phosphide (InP), Cadmium Sulphide (CdS), Cadmium Selenide (CdSe), InP-CdS type-II core-shell, Lead Sulphide (PbS), Lead Selenide (PbSe) etc.^have been prepared via hot colloidal synthesis and have been extensively characterized spectroscopically as well as structurally. These quantum dots were utilized for making solution processed organic: inorganic hybrid photodevices. Photodetecting device with enhanced efficiency has been fabricated using physical blend of PbSe and carbon nanotubes. Type-II quantum dots (InP-CdS) were also utilized for making solar cells and their efficiency was found to be much more than their parent quantum dots (InP and CdS). Photonic composite materials, such as polymers doped with nanoparticles, have attracted a great deal of attention because of relative ease and flexibility of their engineering as well as improved performance for applications in photonic or optoelectronic devices. 2D Photonic Crystals of enhanced structural and optical properties were fabricated by doping small amount of colloidal gold nanoparticles and patterned via multi-beam interference lithography.^Spontaneous emission of quantum rods doped in such photonic crystal was controlled by simple azimuthal rotation of photonic crystals. Detailed studies have been performed to understand the underlying phenomenon/physics. Plasmonic nanostructures are also very attractive due to their ability to tune the plasmonic response by changing geometry. Plasmonic nanoarrays have been prepared by templating in porous alumina template and have been found to show extended response in infrared region owing to transverse plasmon coupling in nanoarrays. We have also prepared several planar optically active structures via two-photon lithography. In situ reduction of metal salt with simultaneous polymerization of SU-8 was utilized for making all plasmonic nanostructures. Detailed studies involving expected chemical reaction and structural/optical properties have been performed to characterize the same.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential of environmentally friendly solar energy is enormous, but the fabrication of solar cells that are efficient and competitive to other sources of energy remains a serious challenge. The quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSC) is an encouraging cost-effective option to study as it has the potential to overcome the maximum theoretical limit of traditional solar cells. The key components in QDSSCs is the quantum dot/photoanode heterostructure. So, the study of optical properties of quantum dots and photoanode materials, and the charge transfer at the interface is necessary to understand and improve the efficiency and durability of these solar cells. Zinc Tin Oxide (ZTO) has potential for use as a photoanode in QDSSCs. So, the optical properties of ZTO nanowires was studied by using diffuse reflectance, Photoluminescence(PL), and Time Resolved PL (TRPL) measurements. The ZTO nanowires have a direct forbidden transition and thus do not have band to band PL. The two distinct PL peaks observed are centered at 1.86eV (red) and 2.81eV (blue), representing two distinct defect state transitions. The time resolved PL measurements show complex non-exponential decays at all wavelengths, indicative of defect to defect transitions, with the red emissive states decaying much slower than the blue emissive states. We propose an energy band model for the nanowires and the associated transitions between the defect states that are consistent with our measurements. One of the goal of this dissertation is to study the effect of Mn doping on ZTO and the electron transfer from CdSe QDs to Mn ZTO nanoparticles. We have successfully synthesized high surface area & single phase ZTO and Mn doped ZTO NPs using hydrothermal synthesis method. The incorporation of Mn into the ZTO has been studied by using XRD, TEM and XPS. We find that the Mn2+ ion most likely substitutes for the Zn2+ ion in the ZTO crystal. The Mn doping not only changes the magnetic properties, but also modifies the optical properties of ZTO nanoparticles. It modifies the band gap energy, changes the band tail states, and creates mid-band gap states as depicted in absorbance spectra. In addition, the Mn doping in ZTO quenches the defect PL in the ZTO nanoparticles. Finally, we sensitized ZTO and Mn ZTO nanoparticles films with CdSe quantum dots to form CdSe/ZTO and CdSe/Mn ZTO nanoparticle interfaces. A comparative electron transfer study is conducted in CdSe/Mn ZTO and CdSe/ZTO interface using fs transient absorption. Our result suggests that the electron transfer from CdSe is a not a single step process, but instead involves the intermediate charge transfer state. The faster time constant is associated with charge transfer and is found to be 2 ps and 3.7 ps in CdSe/ZTO and CdSe/Mn ZTO samples, respectively. The slower time constant is due to charge dissociation and occurs on a time scale of 28 ps and 30 ps in CdSe/ZTO and CdSe/Mn ZTO, respectively. The observed electron transfers differences due to the Mn doping in the ZTO nanoparticles has been analyzed using the Marcus theory of electron transfer, considering the effect of driving force and sub band gap states on the transfer rate, and agrees with our measurements.

Book excerpt: Semiconductor nanowires are nanostructures with lengths up to few microns and small cross sections (10ths of nanometers). In the recent years the development in the field of III-N nanowire technology has been spectacular. In particular they are consider as promising building in nanoscale electronics and optoelectronics devices; such as photodetectors, transistors, biosensors, light source, solar cells, etc. In this work, we present fabrication and the characterization of photodetector and light emitter based devices on III-N nanowires. First we present a study of a visible blind photodetector based on p-i-n GaN nanowires ensembles grown on Si (111). We show that these devices exhibit a high responsivity exceeding that of thin film counterparts. We also demonstrate UV photodetectors based on single nanowires containing GaN/AlN multi-axial quantum discs in the intrinsic region of the nanowires. Photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence spectroscopy show spectral contributions above and below the GaN bandgap according to the variation of the discs thickness. The photocurrent spectra show a sub-band-gap peak related to the interband absorption between the confined states in the large Qdiscs. Finally we present a study of photodetectors and light emitters based on radial InGaN/GaN MQW embedded in GaN wires. The wires used as photodetectors showed a contribution below the GaN bandgap. OBIC measurements demonstrate that, this signal is exclusively generated in the InGaN MQW region. We showed that LEDs based on this structure show a electroluminescence emission and a red shift when the In content present in the QWs increases which is in good agreement with photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence results.
