Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials for energy storage have become increasingly important in the modern world as alternatives to petrochemical energy sources. Although technology such as lithium-ion batteries and solid oxide fuel cells are in commercial use, improvements must still be made to increase widespread adoption. To this end, nanostructured materials have emerged as potentially impactful solutions, as they can greatly improve the performance of the energy storage device. One goal of this dissertation was to fabricate nanostructured materials through solution-based processing, electrospinning, and controlled annealing for lithium-ion battery electrodes. This project resulted in the formation of porous fibers from inexpensive, nontoxic materials that can be used as high capacity electrodes. Another component of this dissertation was to deposit thin film noble metals and metal oxides via sputtering for metal-air battery cathodes. The results from these experiments indicate that nanostructured thin films could have improved catalytic activity compared to polycrystalline bulk structures, and also were lower cost due to the decrease in material used. The other major portion of this dissertation was to study the fundamental behavior of nanostructured materials for energy storage at a localized level using electrochemical strain microscopy, a technique that is still in its infancy. The measured responses using electrochemical strain microscopy tended to be difficult to interpret, as they contained many different chemical and mechanical contributions. A series of experiments were devised to distinguish among the different mechanisms, comparing differing responses from Vegard strain, ferroelectric behavior, and electrostrictive effects. Given this framework, inhomogeneous lithium iron phosphate was characterized using electrochemical strain microscopy. From these results, it was found that nanocrystalline particles had higher lithium ion diffusivity as compared to microcrystalline particles, which correlates with macroscopic electrochemical performance. Furthermore, this technique could be applied to measure local lithium ion concentration in samples at different states of charge. Electrochemical strain microscopy was also applied to study samarium doped ceria, a solid oxide fuel cell electrolyte. In this case, the measured behavior was found to be due to the motion of small polarons, supporting the space-charge model of mixed ionic and electronic conductivity in nanostructured electrolytes. Electrochemical strain microscopy was found to be a strong and versatile technique that can fundamentally characterize local behavior of ions, vacancies, electrons, and holes in an energy storage material, and can guide future research in this area.

Book excerpt: Finding a promising material and constructing a new method to have both high energy and power are key issues for future energy storage systems. This dissertation addresses three different materials systems to resolve those issues. Pseudocapacitive materials such as RuO2 and MnO2 display high capacitance but Nb2O5, displays a different charge storage mechanism, one highly dependent on its crystal phase rather than its surface area. Various sol-gel techniques were used to synthesize the different phases of Nb2O5 and electrochemical testing was used to study their charge storage with some phases displaying comparable charge storage to MnO2. To overcome the electrical limitations of using an insulating material, the core-shell structure (Nb2O5/C) was also examined and the method could be generalized to improve other pseudocapacitors. Besides electronic conductivity, the diffusion of the electrolyte ions through the shell material is a critical factor for fast charging/discharging in the core-shell structure. This dissertation also involves another topic, a reconfigurable electrode, that displays both high energy and power density. By constructing a reconfigurable electrode which has different electrical properties (metallic or insulating state) depending on the amount of intercalated `guest' ions into `host' material, it can be used as a battery or electrochemical capacitor material in the insulating or metallic state respectively. Metal oxide bronzes having metal-insulator transition were investigated in this study.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled FABRICATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF METAL OXIDE NANOSTRUCTURES Submitted by Li Dan for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in July 2007 Among various nanostructured materials, metal oxides are very promising for a variety of practical applications. Among different possible synthesis methods for metal oxide nanostructures, hydrothermal synthesis is of great interest because it is safe and environmentally friendly, and is typically performed at temperatures of less than 200 C. In this dissertation, several metal oxide nanostructures, including zinc oxide (ZnO), copper oxide (CuO) and nickel oxide (NiO) nanostructures, were fabricated by hydrothermal synthesis from aqueous solutions of zinc/copper/nickel nitrate hydrate and hexamethylenetetramine. The morphological, structural, optical and electrochemical properties of resultant nanostructures were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), photoluminescence (PL), and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). The obtained ZnO nanorods are straight and perpendicular to the substrate. The substrate conditions have considerable effects on the size and the orientation of the nanorods. The pH value of solutions also has significant influence on the morphology of resultant ZnO nanostructures. The PL spectra of the ZnO nanorods exhibit one UV peak and one yellow peak ( 578 nm). The ZnO nanorods also show very strong EPR signal at g 1.96. For different synthesis conditions, spherical assemblies of CuO platelets and CuO nanostructured films were obtained respectively. The solution concentration, pH value, synthesis temperature, and presence of seeds significantly affect obtained morphology as well as adhesion to the substrate. For different synthesis conditions, NiO nanowalls and NiO nanostructured films were obtained respectively. The influence of pH value is different on different NiO nanostructures. Finally, transition metal (Mn, Cr, and Co) doped ZnO nanostructures were synthesized by a hydrothermal method from aqueous solutions of zinc nitrate hydrate, TM (TM = Mn, Cr, Co) nitrate hydrate, and hexamethylenetetramine. The addition of TM nitrate hydrate resulted in the change of the shape and preferential orientation of ZnO nanorods. Also, the addition of the dopant affects the optical properties, including the ratio of UV to defect emission and the position of the UV emission peak. Book excerpt: Nano-oxide materials lend themselves to applications in a wide variety of emerging technological fields such as microelectronics, catalysts, ceramics, coatings, and energy storage. However, developing new routes for making nano-based materials is a challenging area for solid-state materials chemists. This book does just that by describing a novel method for preparing them. The authors have developed a novel low-temperature, self-propagating synthetic route to nano-oxides by the solution combustion and combustible precursor processes. This method provides the desired composition, structure, and properties for many types of technologically useful nanocrystalline oxide materials like alumina, ceria, iron oxides, titania, yttria, and zirconia, among others. The book is particularly instructive in bringing readers one step closer to the exploration of nanomaterials. Students of nanoscience can acquaint themselves with the actual production and evaluation of nanopowders by this route, while academic researchers and industrial scientists will find answers to a host of questions on nano-oxides. The book also provides an impetus for scientists in industrial research to evaluate and explore new ways to scale up the production of nanomaterials, offering helpful suggestions for further research.
