This field has shown a dramatic growth thanks to the creation of sensitive thin films onto diverse optical fiber configurations. In this sense, a wide range of optical fiber devices have been successfully fabricated for monitoring biological, chemical, medical or physical parameters. In addition, the use of nanoparticles into the sensitive thin films has resulted in an enhancement in the response time, robustness or sensitivity in the optical devices, which is associated to the inherent properties of nanoparticles (high surface area ratio or porosity). Among all of them, the metallic nanoparticles are of great interest for sensing applications due to the presence of strong absorption bands in the visible and near-infrared regions, due to their localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPR). These optical resonances are due to the coupling of certain modes of the incident light to the collective oscillation of the conduction electrons of the metallic nanoparticles. The LSPR extinction bands are very useful for sensing applications as far as they can be affected by refractive index variations of the surrounding medium of the nanoparticles, and therefore, it is possible to create optical sensors with outstanding properties such as high sensitivity and optical self-reference. In this chapter, the attractive optical properties of metal nanostructures and their implementation into different optical fiber configuration for sensing or biosensing applications will be studied.

Book excerpt: Label-free detection techniques have an important role in many applications, such as situations where few molecules -- rather than low molarity -- need to be detected, such as in single-cell screening. While surface plasmon resonance (SPR) scattering from metal nanoparticles has been shown to achieve significantly higher sensitivity in gene arrays, such an approach has not been demonstrated for protein arrays. SPR-based sensors could either use simple absorption measurement in a UV-Vis spectrometer or possibly surfaceenhanced Raman spectroscopy as the detection mechanism for molecules of interest. However, non-spherical particles are needed to achieve high sensitivity and field enhancement that is a requirement in both techniques, but these shapes are not easy toproduce reproducibly and preserve for extended periods of time. Here I present a carbonbased template-stripping method combined with nanosphere lithography (NSL). This fabrication allows to preserve the sharp features in atomically flat surfaces which are a composite of a non-spherical metal nano-particle (gold or silver) and a transparent embedding material such as glass. The stripping process is residue-free due to the introduction of a sacrificial carbon layer. The nanometer scale flat surface of our template stripping process is also precious for general protein absorption studies, because an inherent material contrast can resolve binding of layers on the 2 nm scale. These nanocomposite surfaces also allow us to tailor well-defined SPR extinction peaks with locations in the visible or infrared spectrum depending on the metal and the particle size and the degree of non-symmetry. As the particle thickness is reduced and the particle bisector length is increased, the peak position of the resonance shifts to the red. Not only the peak position shifts, but also the sensitivity to environmental changes increases. Therefore, the peak position of the resonance spectrum is dependent on the dielectric environmental changes of each particle, and the particle geometries. The resulting silver or gold nanoparticles in the surface of a glass slide are capable of detecting thiol surface modification, and biotin-streptavidin protein binding events. Since each gold or silver particle principally acts as an independent sensor, on the order of a few thousand molecules can be detected, and the sensor can be miniaturized without loss of sensitivity. UNSL-Au metal nanoparticle (MNP) sensors achieve the sensitivity of close to 300 nm/RIU which is higher than any other report of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensors except gold nanocrescents. Finite-difference-time-domain (FDTD) and finite-element-method (FEM) numerical calculations display the influence of the sharp features on the resonance peak position. The maximum near-field intensity is dependent on the polarization direction, the sharpness of the feature, and the near-field confinement from the substrate. 3D FDTD simulation shows the local refractive index sensitivity of the gold truncated tetrahedron, which is in agreement with our experimental result. Both experimental and numerical calculations show that each particle can act as its own sensor.

This dissertation investigates the sensitivity and fundamental SP features of various nanohole array substrates and demonstrates higher sensitivity than conventional continuous gold platforms, tunability to specific analytes, and great enhancement of the local field intensity. Novel instrumentation and analytical techniques are developed and utilized to assess the nanohole array SPR sensing substrates in the near infrared as well as with interaction of other nanostructures. The nanohole array substrates are evaluated throughout the near-infrared (NIR) region by novel SPR instrumentation and methodology that extends the working SPR wavelength range and measurement reliability. Development of a robust NIR-SPR instrument allows access to higher wavelength ranges where sensitivity is improved and novel SP modes and plasmonic materials may be investigated. Different aspects of the NIR-SPR instrument, including temporal stability, mechanical resilience and sensitivity, are evaluated and presented. Furthermore, a method is developed for improving precision and accuracy of empirically determined SP penetration depth, a merit of SPR spectroscopy sensitivity. The technique incorporates an adsorbate-metal bonding effect which improves the consistency in the penetration depth value calculated at different adsorbate thicknesses from 41-1089% relative deviation (without bonding effect) to 2-11% relative deviation (with bonding effect). It also improves the experimental agreement with theory, increases the accuracy of assessing novel plasmonic materials and nanostructures, and increases the precision in adsorbate parameters calculated from the penetration depth value, such as thickness, binding affinity, and surface coverage. Utilizing this NIR-SPR instrument and improved technique for calculation of penetration depth, the sensitivity and various SP modes of the nanohole arrays throughout the NIR range are evaluated, and an improvement in sensitivity compared to conventional continuous gold is observed. Both the Bragg SPs arising from diffraction by the periodic holes and the traditional propagating SPs are characterized with emphasis on sensing capability of the propagating SPs. There are numerous studies on the transmission spectroscopy of nanohole arrays; however this dissertation presents one of the few studies in Kretschmann mode, and the first in the near infrared, where greater surface sensitivity is observed. The sensitivity profile of various nanohole array parameters (periodicity, diameter, excitation wavelength) and SP modes is also presented. Further control and enhancement of the SP field is pursued by interaction between nanohole array substrate and nanoparticles to exploit field intensification between plasmonic structures, i.e. gap mode enhancement. Under specific conditions, the SPs couple together and the electric field between the structures is amplified and localized, which may be exploited for sensing purposes and surface enhanced techniques, including tip enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) or surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). A technique for observing nanohole array-nanoparticle distance dependent SP interaction is developed and utilized to demonstrate SP interaction. Scanning probe microscopy controls the position of a single nanoparticle (SNP) affixed to an atomic force microscope probe, and the location specific interaction of the SNP-nanohole array surface plasmons is measured by darkfield surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. Coupling of the nanoparticle to the nanohole array exhibits a maximum when the SNP resides within a nanohole, which resulted in a maximum SPR wavelength shift of 17 nm and an increase in scatter intensity. This dissertation presents the first empirical observations of SPM controlled gap mode enhancement of more complex nanostructures and allows for optimization of positioning prior to use in sensing.

Various lithographic techniques (nanoimprint, electron beam and optical lithography) are used to nanofabricate those certainly defined gratings. MEMS displacement sensor designs relying on the principle of angular displacement detection scheme are developed. In addition, a MEMS accelerometer design with plasmonic readout with nano-G noise floor is presented. Novel arrayed sensors combining the sensitivities of plasmon resonance and micromembrane type sensors may provide unprecedented performance.

Book excerpt: Degenerately doped semiconductor nanocrystals (NC) exhibit a localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) that falls in the near- to mid-IR range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Unlike metal, the metal oxide LSPR characteristics can be further tuned by doping, and structural control, or by in situ electrochemical or photochemical charging. Here, we illustrate how intrinsic NC attributes like its crystal structure, shape and size, along with band structure and surface properties affects the LSPR properties and its possible applications. First, the interplay of NC shape and the intrinsic crystal structure on the LSPR was studied using model systems of In:CdO and Cs:WO3, the latter of which has an intrinsic anisotropic crystal structure. For both systems, a change of shape from spherical to faceted NCs led to as anticipated higher near field enhancements around the particle. However, with Cs:WO3, presence of an anisotropic hexagonal crystal structure, leads to additional strong LSPR band-splitting into two distinct peaks with comparable intensities. Second, plasmon-molecular vibration coupling, as a proof of concept for sensing applications, was shown using newly developed F and Sn codoped In2O3 NCs to couple to the C-H vibration of surface-bound oleate ligands. A combined theoretical and experimental approach was employed to describe the observed plasmon-plasmon coupling, the influence of coupling strength and relative detuning between the molecular vibration and LSPR on the enhancement factor, and the observed Fano lineshape by deconvoluting the combined response of the LSPR and molecular vibration in transmission, absorption, and reflection. Third, plasmon modulation through dynamic carrier density tuning was investigated using thin films of monodisperse ITO NCs with various doping level and sizes along with an in situ electrochemical setup. From the combination of the in-situ spectroelectrochemical analysis and optical modeling, it was found that often-neglected semiconductor properties, such as band structure modification upon doping and surface chemistry, strongly affect the LSPR modulation behavior. The influence of band structure and effects like Fermi level pinning by surface defect states were shown to cause a surface depletion layer that alters the LSPR properties, namely the extent of LSPR modulation, near field enhancement, and sensitivity of the LSPR to the surrounding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different types of plasmonic nanostructures are proposed and examined experimentally and theoretically, with a view towards sensing applications. First, a self-assembly approach was developed to create arrays of well-ordered glass-supported gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) with controllable particle size and inter-particle spacing. Then, a periodic array of gold nano-disks (AuNDs) supported by a Bragg reflector was proposed and examined in a search for Fano resonances in its optical response. Arrays of heptamer-arranged nanoholes (HNH) in a thin gold film were also proposed and explored theoretically and experimentally, revealing a very rich spectrum of resonances, several exhibiting a Fano lineshape. A commercial implementation of the vectorial finite element method (FEM) was used to model our plasmonic structures. Taking advantage of the periodic nature of the structures, a unit cell containing a single element was modelled. The transmittance, reflectance or absorbance spectra were computed, and the associated electromagnetic fields were obtained by solving the vector wave equations for the electromagnetic field vectors throughout the structures, subject to the applicable boundary conditions, and the applied source fields. The sensing performance of the structures, based on the bulk sensitivity, surface sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) was calculated. First, a novel bottom-up fabrication approach was applied (by our collaborators) to form a periodic array of AuNPs with controllable size over large areas on SiO2 substrates. In this method, self-assembly of block copolymer micelles loaded with metal precursors was combined with a seeding growth route to create ordered AuNPs of desired size. It was shown that this new fabrication method offers a new approach to tune the AuNP size and edge-to-edge inter-particle spacing while preserving the AuNP ordering. The optical characteristics of the AuNP arrays, such as their size, interparticle spacing, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) wavelength, and bulk sensitivity, were examined, numerically and experimentally. This proposed novel fabrication method is applicable for low-cost mass-production of large-area arrays of high-quality AuNPs on a substrate for sensing applications. Then, we proposed and examined the formation of Fano resonances in a plasmonic-dielectric system consisting of uncoupled gold nano-disk (AuND) arrays on a quarter-wave dielectric stack. The mechanism behind the creation of Fano resonances was explained based on the coherent interference between the reflection of the Bragg stack and the LSPPs of the AuNDs. Fano parameters were obtained by fitting the computational data to the Fano formula. The bulk sensitivities and figure of merit of the Fano resonances were calculated. This plasmonic structure supports Fano resonances with a linewidth around 9 nm which is much narrower than the individual AuND LSPP bandwidth ( 80 nm) and the Bragg stack bandwidth ( 100 nm). Supporting Fano resonances with such a narrow linewidth, the structure has a great potential to be used for sensing applications. Also, this metallic-dielectric nanostructure requires no near-field coupling between AuNDs to generate the Fano resonances. So, the AuNDs can be located far enough from each other to simplify the potential fabrication process. The optical properties of HNH arrays on an SiO2 substrate were investigated, numerically and experimentally. Helium focused ion beam (HeFIB) milling was applied (by Dr. Choloong Hahn) to fabricate well-ordered and well-defined arrays of HNHs. Transmittance spectra of the structures were obtained as the optical response, which exhibits several Fano resonances. Then, the mechanism behind the formation of the Fano resonances was explained, and the sensing performance of the structure was inspected by measuring the bulk sensitivities. This array of nanohole cluster is exciting because it supports propagating SPPs and LSPPs, and also Wood's anomaly waves, which makes the optical response very rich in excitations and spectral features. Also, as a periodic array of sub-wavelength metallic nanoholes, the system produces extraordinary optical transmission - highly enhanced transmission through (otherwise) opaque metallic films at specific wavelengths, facilitating measurement acquisition in transmission.
