We devised an approach for synthesizing DNA-templated copper nanowires on substrates; these nanostructures have diameters as large as ~10 nm and lengths greater than 10 micrometers. We also developed a facile method for reducing nonspecific surface metallization for DNA-templated nanowires; this technique was applied in creating silver nanowires from single-stranded DNA. We further designed substrates with unique spatial addressing to allow the measurement of surface features repeatedly using complementary microscopic techniques (e.g., atomic force and electron microscopy). In addition, we demonstrated the localization of carbon nanotubes onto aligned surface DNA, by using 1-pyrenemethylamine as a bridging compound to facilitate nanotube assembly. Moreover, we devised and evaluated a gas flow cell system for making aligned carbon nanotube arrays on surfaces. We improved upon our initial DNA-nanotube deposition approach by localizing surfactant-wrapped nanotubes onto surface-aligned DNA with a coverage>80%. Furthermore, we evaluated self-assembling, three-branched DNA nanostructures as three-terminal nanodevice templates; characterized the metallization of these assemblies; and studied the specific localization of nanostructures within these complexes. Lastly, we made and characterized DNA-templated nickel nanowires. Our success in DNA-templated nanowire fabrication should facilitate future developments in nanoelectronics.

Book excerpt: One-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanowires, have drawn extensive research interests in the recent years. The smaller size brings unique properties to the nanowires due to the finite size effect (quantum confinement effects). The unique geometrical features of the nanowires bring their utilization in many practical applications in the recent advanced technology. This book provides an updated review on fabrication, properties, and applications of various nanowires. This book is aimed to provide solid foundation of nanowires to the students, scientists, and engineers working in the field of material science and condensed matter physics.

Book excerpt: Poly- and single-crystalline copper nanowires have been created by electrochemical deposition of copper in etched ion-track membranes. 30 æm thick polycarbonate foils were irradiated at the UNILAC (GSI, Darmstadt) with Au and Pb ions of kinetic energy 1-2 GeV with?uences between 1 and 10^9 ions/cm^2. The latent tracks generated by the heavy ions were chemically etched providing membranes with cylindrical pores of diameter between 30 nm and æm. These membranes were used as templates for the growth of copper. Potentiostatic deposition of copper in membranes with large (several hundred nm) and small (several ten nm) diameter pores have been investigated using a two-electrode electrochemical cell. We present the results of a systematic study aimed at determination of the optimal deposition parameters (overvoltage, temperature, and electrolyte solution) required for single-crystalline growth. The morphology and crystallinity of the copper nanowires were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Thus, from our results we can afirm that nanowires deposited at high temperatures (50?C) and overvoltages lower than 60 mV possess a single-crystalline structure. Polycrystalline wires were obtained from deposition at room temperature or at higher overvoltages. Typical defects of single- crystals as twins and slips were also observed. Two different techniques were tested to contact nanoneedles for electrical transport measurements.

Book excerpt: The selective deposition of a variety of materials onto DNA templates for the formation of continuous DNA-templated nanowires was also demonstrated. Specifically, an electroless Ni plating solution was developed to enable the fabrication of uniform and continuous DNA-templated Ni nanowires. Tests showed that these DNA-templated Ni nanowires were conductive. Moreover, continuous DNA-templated Bi2Te3 and/or Te nanowires have been fabricated through galvanic displacement of DNA-templated Ni and Cu nanowires. Altogether, these results represent important progress toward the realization of DNA-templated nanofabrication.

Book excerpt: This handbook comprehensively reviews different nanomaterials and modern electrochemical approaches used in the point-of-care analysis of biomolecules. It describes the importance, significance, and application of various kinds of smart nanomaterials and their integration with modern electrochemical techniques for the point-of-care diagnosis of biologically important biomolecules. The interaction between bio-systems and nanomaterials have been discussed in this book using advanced electrochemical methods and characterizing techniques. It describes the combination of classical and modern methodologies for the synthesis of metal nanoparticles/nanoclusters and modern electrochemical techniques for the early-stage detection and point-of-care diagnosis of cancer and other infectious disease such as SARS, influenza, tuberculosis (TB), and hepatitis. Finally, the book provides an accessible and readable summary of the use of nanomaterial for understanding the electrochemical reaction taking place at nano-bio interfaces in electrochemical biomolecular detection and analysis. The book bridges the gap and strengthens the relationship between electrochemists, material scientists, and biomolecular scientists who are directly or indirectly associated with the field of such point-of-care diagnostics.

A nanometer is a billionth of a meter, about 1/80,000 of the diameter of a human hair, or 10 times the diameter of a hydrogen atom. Nanotechnology is now used in precision engineering, new materials development as well as in electronics; electromechanical systems as well as mainstream biomedical applications in areas such as gene therapy, drug delivery and novel drug discovery techniques. This book presents new and important breakthroughs in the field from around the world.

Therefore, it is not a general overview covering all the fields of nanopackaging, but is mainly focused on two topics. The first topic deals with atomic scale devices or circuit requirements, as well as related recent technological developments; for example, surface science engineering and atomic scale interconnects studies. The second main part of the book brings CNT nano-materials solutions for resolving interconnect or thermal management problems in microelectronics device packaging. This book is not just useful for those who attended the International Workshop on Nanopackaging in Grenoble, but can provide valuable information to scientists and technologists in the nanopackaging community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of nanostructures has become very common throughout high-tech industries. In order to enhance the applicability of Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs) in systems such as Nano-Electromechanical Systems, the phase transformation behavior of SMA nanostructures should be explored. The primary focus of this work is on the fabrication of metallic nanowires and the characterization of the phase transformation of SMA nanowires. Various metallic nanowires are fabricated through the use of the mechanical pressure injection method. The mechanical pressure injection method is a template assisted nanowire fabrication method in which an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) template is impregnated with liquid metal. The fabrication procedure of the AAO templates is analyzed in order to determine the effect of the various fabrication steps. Furthermore, metallic nanowires are embedded into polymeric nano bers as a means to incorporate nanowires within other nanostructures. The knowledge obtained through the analysis of the AAO template fabrication guides the fabrication of SMA nanowires of various diameters. The fabrication of SMA nanowires with di fferent diameters is accomplished through the fabrication of AAO templates of varying diameters. The phase transformation behavior of the fabricated SMA nanowires is characterized through transmission electron microscopy. By analyzing the fabricated SMA nanowires, it is found that none of the fabricated SMA nanowires exhibit a size eff ect on the phase transformation. The lack of a size e ffect on the phase transition of SMA nanowires is contrary to the results for SMA nanograins, nanocrystals, and thin films, which all exhibit a size eff ect on the phase transformation. The lack of a size eff ect is further studied through molecular dynamic simulations. These simulations show that free-standing metallic nanowires will exhibit a phase transformation when their diameters are sufficiently small. Furthermore, the application of a constraint on metallic nanowires will inhibit the phase transformation shown for unconstrained metallic nanowires. Therefore, it is concluded that free-standing SMA nanowires will exhibit a phase transformation throughout the nanoscale, but constrained SMA nanowires will reach a critical size below which the phase transformation is inhibited.
