Download or read book Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z written by W. Geoffrey Arnott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birds in the Ancient World from A to Z gathers together the ancient information available, listing all the names that ancient Greeks gave their birds and all their descriptions and analyses. W. Geoffrey Arnott identifies as many of them as possible in the light of modern ornithological studies. The ancient Greek bird names are transliterated into English script, and all that the ancients said about birds is presented in English. This book is accordingly the first complete discussion of ancient bird names that will be accessible to readers without ancient Greek. The only large-scale examination of ancient birds for seventy years, the book has an exhaustive bibliography (partly classical scholarship and partly ornithological) to encourage further study, and provides students and ornithologists with the definitive study of ancient birds.

Book Synopsis The Autobiography of Malcolm X by : Malcolm X
Download or read book The Autobiography of Malcolm X written by Malcolm X and published by Penguin Modern Classics. This book was released on 1965 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm X's blazing, legendary autobiography, completed shortly before his assassination in 1965, depicts a remarkable life: a child born into rage and despair, who turned to street-hustling and cocaine in the Harlem ghetto, followed by prison, where he converted to the Black Muslims and honed the energy and brilliance that made him one of the most important political figures of his time - and an icon in ours. It also charts the spiritual journey that took him beyond militancy, and led to his murder, a powerful story of transformation, redemption and betrayal. Vilified by his critics as an anti-white demagogue, Malcolm X gave a voice to unheard African-Americans, bringing them pride, hope and fearlessness, and remains an inspirational and controversial figure today.

Book excerpt: Comprised of over 300 classic animal tales, this edition of Aesop’s Fables will capture any young reader’s imagination. Aesop’s Fables have long been remembered as farcical, but resonant tales, capturing the imaginations of adults and children alike. Aesop’s Fables have been a cornerstone in narrating to children the differences between right and wrong. Including such revered tales as the Tortoise and the Hare, to lesser known but equally as insightful stories such as the Mountain and the Mouse, Aesop’s Fables have provided timeless guidance to young children through the guise of anthropomorphized animals. Using common animals in this manner has been a treasured vehicle for young readers to better understand and relate to the world around them. Aesop’s oral stories had been passed down through generations to celebrate the morality of life before being captured on the page. Other well-known fables in this collection include; The Goose Who Laid the Golden Eggs, The City Mouse, and The Kid and the Wolf. This translation was compiled by George Fyler Townsend. With eye-catching new covers and a new note about the author, this edition of Aesop's Fables is both modern and readable.

Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables Illustrated: A New Revised Version from Original Sources by Aesop, with hundreds of illustrations by Harrison Weir, John Tenniel and Ernest Griest. Translation by George Fyler Townsend. This is a collection of tales by the Greek storyteller Aesop. Most of the tales included here were translated and edited by Reverend George Fyler Townsend (1814-1900) in England and published under the title, Aesop's Fables. Townsend's translations were influential on many subsequent collections of fables. Some of the tales included here were taken from the book How to Tell Stories to Children and Some Stories To Tell, by Sara Cone Bryant and published in London in 1918. In some cases, we have included both Townsend's version and Bryant's version of the same tale. Numerous tales credited to Aesop were gathered across the centuries and in many languages in a storytelling tradition that continues to this day. Many of the tales are characterized by animals and inanimate objects that speak, solve problems, and generally have human characteristics.

Book excerpt: Aesop's Fables by Aesop - Translated by George Fyler Townsend - THE TALE, the Parable, and the Fable are all common and popular modes of conveying instruction. Each is distinguished by its own special characteristics. The Tale consists simply in the narration of a story either founded on facts, or created solely by the imagination, and not necessarily associated with the teaching of any moral lesson. The Parable is the designed use of language purposely intended to convey a hidden and secret meaning other than that contained in the words themselves; and which may or may not bear a special reference to the hearer, or reader. The Fable partly agrees with, and partly differs from both of these. It will contain, like the Tale, a short but real narrative; it will seek, like the Parable, to convey a hidden meaning, and that not so much by the use of language, as by the skilful introduction of fictitious characters; and yet unlike to either Tale or Parable, it will ever keep in view, as its high prerogative, and inseparable attribute, the great purpose of instruction, and will necessarily seek to inculcate some moral maxim, social duty, or political truth. The true Fable, if it rise to its high requirements, ever aims at one great end and purpose representation of human motive, and the improvement of human conduct, and yet it so conceals its design under the disguise of fictitious characters, by clothing with speech the animals of the field, the birds of the air, the trees of the wood, or the beasts of the forest, that the reader shall receive advice without perceiving the presence of the adviser.
