Book Synopsis Socialism and Foreign Policy by : Kenneth E. Miller
Download or read book Socialism and Foreign Policy written by Kenneth E. Miller and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended as a contribution to the study of the relation of political ideas and governmental policies. It seeks to examine and evaluate the British Labour Party's early efforts to apply socialist theories to foreign policy actions. Since I have focused on these ideas and events, I have not attempted to take into account happenings on the British domestic front that, though important to the Labour Party and the trade unions, did not directly affect foreign policy. Nor are matters of imperial or Commonwealth policy considered, except as they relate to the development of socialist theories and interpretations or as they influenced Great Britain's relations with other independent states. I must express my appreciation for their assistance to Drs. Malcolm Moos, Thomas 1. Cook, and Carl B. "Swisher, under whose direction this project first began at the Johns Hopkins University; to Mrs. E. Rickman of the Labour Party's Library and to Mrs. Gladys D. Cremer of the Fabian Society, for access to various Labour and socialist ma terials; to the Rutgers University Research Council for grants in support of some of the research; and to Mrs. Edward Teifeld and Mrs. Boris Pritsky for the wearisome efforts of typing various versions of the manuscript. The responsibility for errors is, of course, mine. The book is dedicated to my wife Marilyn, who aided so greatly in its preparation, not least by a tactful and appropriate balance of patience and impatience.

Download or read book Union Futures written by Jane Wills and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, Jane Wills argues that more needs to be done if the forms, structures and strategies of trade unionism are to measure up to the changing contours and complexities of capitalist society and the needs of workers in the 21st century. Highlighting some of the lessons tobe learned from contemporary organizing campaigns, Wills argues that unions have much to gain from building new networks. She argues that workplace and trade union organization needs to be sustained and supplemented through connections to other trade unionists and allies in the locality and further afield. By building networks around a positive agenda for change, unions can reach out and appeal to a new generation of workers.

Book Synopsis Sick-Note Britain by : Adrian Massey
Download or read book Sick-Note Britain written by Adrian Massey and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Adrian Massey has worked at the intersection of medicine and society for decades. He argues compellingly that our hyper-medicalized society has falsely equated sickness with illness, and sickness with unfitness to work--whereas sickness is primarily a social problem requiring social, not medical, solutions. Sick-Note Britain lays bare Britain's gross error: when doctors cannot 'fix' anxiety or chronic pain, workplace attendance is still treated as a matter for arbitration by our strained primary care service. What is needed is a tailored, employer-employee contractual solution, but obstacles block this approach: excessively complex employment law constraining both sides; an outdated benefits system that overburdens doctors and traumatizes the vulnerable; and a workplace culture that is too inflexible to keep sick employees in work. This is a blistering condemnation of a sham system that works for nobody, and an urgent call to rethink how we manage sickness--for the sake of our economy, our wellbeing, and our health service.

Book Synopsis The People's Flag and the Union Jack by : Gerry Hassan
Download or read book The People's Flag and the Union Jack written by Gerry Hassan and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Labour Party has at times been a force for radical change in the UK, but one critical aspect of its makeup has been consistently misunderstood and underplayed: its Britishness. Throughout the party's history, its Britishness has been an integral part of how it has done politics, acted in government and opposition, and understood the UK and its nations and regions. The People's Flag and the Union Jack is the first comprehensive account of how Labour has tried to understand Britain and Britishness and to compete in a political landscape defined by conservative notions of nation, patriotism and tradition. At a time when many of the party faithful regard national identity as a toxic subject, academics Gerry Hassan and Eric Shaw argue that Labour's Britishness and its ambiguous relationship with issues of nationalism matter more today than ever before, and will continue to matter for the foreseeable future, when the UK is in fundamental crisis. As debate rages about Brexit, and the prospect of Scottish independence remains live, this timely intervention, featuring contributions from a wealth of pioneering thinkers, offers an illuminating and perceptive insight into Labour's past, present and future.
