Book excerpt: It started as a joke—but it’s not funny anymore. Even though Ezra’s got good friends and can make everyone laugh, he feels like he’s invisible, both at home and at school. To make things worse, he’s the only kid in his group without a phone—left out of plans and shared jokes and games. Finally, at the end of fifth grade, his parents come through. The phone changes everything. Ezra texts his friends all the time, can instantly keep up with his favorite teams, and boredom is a memory. Best of all, the funny pictures he’s posting on social media are getting a lot of attention. Other kids—including the popular kids—are noticing him for the first time. Then he takes a photo that pushes things over the edge, and suddenly he’s in the principal’s office with his parents ... Amy E. Feldman’s debut is smart, laugh-out-loud funny, fast-moving—a great read that also takes on the very serious subject of kids and phone use. Middle-grade readers will recognize Ezra as one of their own, and the author’s light touch allows her to address an issue parents might not recognize, but kids need to be aware of. Ezra Exposed is just right for fans of Gordon Korman, Tom Angleberger, and Rebecca Stead. Book excerpt: Canada's "no. 1 defender of freedom of speech" and the bestselling author of Shakedown makes the timely and provocative case that when it comes to oil, ethics matter just as much as the economy and the environment. In 2009, Ezra Levant's bestselling book Shakedown revealed the corruption of Canada's human rights commissions and was declared the "most important public affairs book of the year." In Ethical Oil, Levant turns his attention to another hot-button topic: the ethical cost of our addiction to oil. While many North Americans may be aware of the financial and environmental price we pay for a gallon of gas or a barrel of oil, Levant argues that it is time we consider ethical factors as well. With his trademark candor, Levant asks hard-hitting questions: With the oil sands at our disposal, is it ethically responsible to import our oil from the Sudan, Russia, and Mexico? How should we weigh carbon emissions with human rights violations in Saudi Arabia? And assuming that we can't live without oil, can the development of energy be made more environmentally sustainable? In Ethical Oil, Levant exposes the hypocrisy of the West's dealings with the reprehensible regimes from which we purchase the oil that sustains our lifestyles, and offers solutions to this dilemma. Readers at all points on the political spectrum will want to read this timely and provocative new book, which is sure to spark debate.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intensely personal, and philosophical, account of why white America’s racial unconscious is not so unconscious An Essay for Ezra is a critique of terror that begins but by no means ends with the presidency of Donald J. Trump. A father addresses his son and a boy shares his observations in a dynamic dialogistic exchange that is a commentary of and for its time, taking the measure of racial terror and of white supremacy both in our moment and as a historical phenomenon. Framed through the experiences of the author’s biracial son, An Essay for Ezra is intensely personal while also powerfully universal. Drawing on the social and political thought of James Baldwin and Martin Luther King, Grant Farred examines the temptation and the perils of essentialism and the need to discriminate—to engage the black mind as much as the black body. With that dialectic as his starting point, Farred engages the ideas of Jameson, Barthes, Derrida, Adorno, Kant, and other thinkers to derive an ethics of being in our time of social peril. His antiessentialist racial analysis is salient, especially when he deploys Dave Chappelle as a counterpoint to Baldwin—and Chappelle’s brilliant comic philosophic voice jabs at both racial and gender identity. Standing apart for its willingness to explore terror in all its ambivalence, this theoretical reflection on racism, knowledge, ethics, and being in our neofascist present brings to bear the full weight of philosophical inquiry and popular cultural critique on black life in the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books of Ezra and Nehemiah represent a significant turning point in biblical history. They tell the story not only of the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem but also of the resurrection of God’s people from the death of exile. Hannah Harrington thus begins her commentary with an evocative description of these books as “the story of a new Israel forged out of the old” and “the text of a people clinging to their genealogical past and attempting to preserve their heritage while walking forward into uncharted territory.” Throughout this commentary, Harrington combines analytical research on the language and culture behind the books of Ezra and Nehemiah with challenging thoughts for the Christian church today, bringing to bear a unique perspective on these books not as the end of Old Testament history but as early documents of the Second Temple period. Accordingly, Harrington incorporates a wealth of information from other Jewish literature of the time to freshly illuminate many of the topics and issues at hand while focusing on the interpretation and use of these books for Christian life today.

In his first fight, Rafe slipped, and his opponent cut his side. The pain showed him his true purpose. Since then, he has never lost a fight, and he has never again been cut. Rafe has only eight fights left before he can claim his reward, but Ezra Clayton is not certain he wants to free the greatest gladiator the South has ever known. As the deadline draws near and the blood continues to flow, Rafe knows that if his freedom is denied, he will have to take it, as he has taken so many lives: with his two bare hands.

Book excerpt: The historical development of the human species has impacted our world with numerous changes, which have altered natural ecological formats beyond what could have been perceived during ancient human history. Humanity has inundated the Earth with such vastness it has caused disarray and loss of natural balance among what are viewed as lesser beings. The terrestrial non-human life forms have been challenged to adapt to the ubiquity of human imposed negative influences. Wolves have been an earthly presence for nearly a million years functioning the same as they do currently. Wolf and human character traits are amazingly similar. Ancient human hunter-gatherer civil design formed and operated exactly like we observe present day wolves. Tribes were small in number, socially connected, and completely reliant on unity and harmonious function installed as a means of survival. The wolf pack is a perfected uniform social order and these wolves are among the most adaptable planetary organisms. They function and survive in the harshest climates and remain a presence especially in high latitudes. I was inspired to create a story displaying the importance and necessity of predators like wolves to be allowed opportunity to continue as a viable species. Ecological balance is dependent on predatory animals as a means to gain longevity. Natural science has only recently truly understood the importance of wolves in the arctic and other remote regions of the world. It’s a hope as the human species confronts its future wolves will be included.
