Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Mikhail Epstein offers a systematic theory of modalities (the actual, possible, and necessary), as applied to the discourse of philosophy in its post-Kantian and especially post-Derridean perspectives. He relies on his own experience of living in the USSR and the US, dominated respectively by imperative and possibilist modalities. Possibilism assumes that a thing or event acquires meaning only in the context of its multiple possibilities, inviting counterfactual and conditional modes of description. The author focuses on the creative potentials of possibilistic thinking and its heuristic value. The book demonstrates the range of modal approaches to society, culture, ethics, and language, and outlines potentiology as a new philosophical discipline interacting with ontology and epistemology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On January 20, 1994 the worshippers at the Toronto Airport Vineyard Church began to feel the Holy Spirit move them. They began to laugh uncontrollably, collapse to the floor, stagger as if drunk. But what was truly startling in this occurrence—now commonly known as the Toronto Blessing—is that these manifestations keep appearing at the Toronto church and have sparked a worldwide charismatic revival. Visitors from around the world have come and started revivals in their home churches upon return. In Main Street Mystics, Margaret Poloma explains what is happening with this contemporary charismatic revival without explaining it away. From her unique position as both a scholar and a pilgrim, Poloma offers an intimate account of the movement while always attempting to understand it through the lenses of social science. She looks at Pentecostalism as a form of mysticism, but a mysticism that engages Pentecostals and charismatics in the everyday world. With its broad overview and up-close portraits, Main Street Mystics is essential for anyone wanting to understand the ever renewing movement of Pentecostalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars increasingly recognise that understanding the history of religion means understanding worship and devotion as well as doctrines and polemics. Early modern Christianity consisted of its lived experience. This collection and its companion volume (Worship and the Parish Church in Early Modern Britain, ed. Natalie Mears and Alec Ryrie) bring together an interdisciplinary range of scholars to discuss what that lived experience comprised, and what it meant. Private and domestic devotion - how early modern men and women practised their religion when they were not in church - is a vital and largely hidden subject. Here, historical, literary and theological scholars examine piety of conformist, non-conformist and Catholic early modern Christians, in a range of private and domestic settings, in both England and Scotland. The subjects under analysis include Bible-reading, the composition of prayers, the use of the psalms, the use of physical props for prayers, the pious interpretation of dreams, and the troubling question of what counted as religious solitude. The collection as a whole broadens and deepens our understanding of the patterns of early modern devotion, and of their meanings for early modern culture as a whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are to take to heart our personal holiness simply because we have been saved to do so. The process of sanctification is essentially a three fold work: First, sanctification is the cleansing of the soul from sin. Second, sanctification brings us to full stature in Christ. Third, sanctification separates us to the Lord for His purposes. There will be, in practicality, varying degrees of thoroughness relative to the riddance of sin versus growth in Christ-like stature because of the varying degrees of human cooperation with the Holy Spirit or lack thereof. Still, sanctification is the active work of the Spirit though such a calling may appear passive, even absent, due to the lack of knowledge, the slothfulness and the rebellion of the saint. It is these three that best represent much of our present religious atmosphere. Where there is lack of knowledge [about sanctification] there has to be indolence, laziness and rebellion in the form of indifference about personal holiness. And rebellion is a very strong word that should not be used without qualification by the one making the charge or taken lightly by the one addressed. To use the word with its' passive counterpart in this case, indifference, is to bring an indictment against a sizeable portion of the body of Christ. Life is about sin, death then hell. Or life is about God, Christ and responding to the Holy Spirit. To grasp the continual need of sanctification one has to know who the real enemy is in order to receive real relief by sanctification. The real enemy is within. We are self deceived, whose roots of deception are affixed to Satan, Adam and the fall; in that order, eventuating in our fallen nature, in desperate need of God's provisions. And thankfully God has supplied us with every provision through the process of sanctification. Marc presently lives in Orlando Florida where he pastors Blessed Fellowship Orlando, an outreach ministry of Orlando Prayer and Worship Center, Senior Pastor Roy Futch.

Book excerpt: Sparks for Inspiration from the Ignatian Flame Gerard Manley Hopkins, SJ, famously wrote that “the world is charged with the grandeur of God.” This quote points toward a key principle of the Ignatian tradition: that God is found in all things, in all places. Yet this is just one of an abundance of inspirational ideas that stem from Ignatian spirituality. To really understand what this unique yet highly practical spirituality is all about, it helps to look at it through many different lenses and to hear about it from many different voices. Charged with Grandeur contains more than 100 insightful and inspiring Ignatian thoughts from dozens of writers, including James Martin, SJ; Margaret Silf; and Monika Hellwig. The entries are conveniently grouped under 11 different Ignatian themes. Rather than throw readers into the deep end, Charged with Grandeur allows readers simply to dip their toes into the 500-year-old Ignatian tradition and to be inspired by the many riches it offers.

Book excerpt: Jesus died with a psalm on his lips. For millennia, humans have been shaped by the Psalms. And before the Nazis banned him from publishing, German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer published this book on the Psalms. What comfort is found in the Psalter? What praise, and what challenge? What threat? In the pages of Psalms: The Prayer Book of the Bible, discover the richness this book of Scripture held for Bonhoeffer, and learn to pray psalms along with Christ. First published in 1940, this classic reveals how the Psalms are essential to the life of the believer and offers Bonhoeffer's reflections on psalms of thanksgiving, suffering, guilt, praise, and lament. Now with an introduction by Walter Brueggemann and excerpts from the Psalms, Bonhoeffer's timeless work offers contemporary readers ancient wisdom and resources for the living of these days. Includes a biographical sketch of Bonhoeffer written by his friend and biographer Eberhard Bethge.
