Book excerpt: "During the past few years both Industry and Government have collected high quality regional and wellsite specific SAR imagery of ice conditions for the southern Beaufort Sea. These data currently exist in a variety of forms including digital data, quality controlled and partially analyzed images, and ice atlases. Industry and Government recognize that these historical data sets contain some quantitative information pertaining to ice islands and multi-year hummock fields. To this end, the Environmental Studies Revolving Fund wishes to consolidate available data and implement a program to collect new data on extreme ice features. Once analyzed, quantitative information for each feature will be retained in a data base application and a hard copy of the imagery will be archived in an extreme features atlas. Additionally, ICL will implement an airborne data acquisition plan in conjunction with the Atmospheric Environment Service to collect extreme ice feature data on an ongoing basis"--ASTIS database.

Book excerpt: Sea Ice: Physics and Remote Sensing addresses experiences acquired mainly in Canada by researchers in the fields of ice physics and growth history in relation to its polycrystalline structure as well as ice parameters retrieval from remote sensing observations. The volume describes processes operating at the macro- and microscale (e.g., brine entrapment in sea ice, crystallographic texture of ice types, brine drainage mechanisms, etc.). The information is supported by high-quality photographs of ice thin-sections prepared from cores of different ice types, all obtained by leading experts during field experiments in the 1970s through the 1990s, using photographic cameras and scanning microscopy. In addition, this volume presents techniques to retrieve a suite of sea ice parameters (e.g. ice type, concentration, extent, thickness, surface temperature, surface deformation, etc.) from space-borne and airborne sensor data. The breadth of the material on this subject is designed to appeal to researchers and users of remote sensing data who want to develop quick familiarity with the capabilities of this technology or detailed knowledge about major techniques for retrieval of key ice parameters. Volume highlights include: Detailed crystallographic classification of natural sea ice, the key information from which information about ice growth conditions can be inferred. Many examples are presented with material to support qualitative and quantitative interpretation of the data. Methods developed for revealing microstructural characteristics of sea ice and performing forensic investigations. Data sets on radiative properties and satellite observations of sea ice, its snow cover, and surrounding open water. Methods of retrieval of ice surface features and geophysical parameters from remote sensing observations with a focus on critical issues such as the suitability of different sensors for different tasks and data synergism. Sea Ice: Physics and Remote Sensing is intended for a variety of sea ice audiences interested in different aspects of ice related to physics, geophysics, remote sensing, operational monitoring, mechanics, and cryospheric sciences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring real-world examples and practical methodology, this rigorous text explores time dependence in the mechanics of ice. Emphasizing use of full scale data, and implementing risk-based design methods, mechanical theory is combined with design and modelling. Readers will gain understanding of fundamental concepts and modern advances of ice mechanics and ice failure processes, analysis of field data, and use of probabilistic design methods, with applications to the interaction of ships and offshore structures with thick ice features or icebergs. The book highlights the use of viscoelastic theory, including nonlinearity with stress and the effects of microstructural change, in the mechanics of ice failure and fracture. The methods of design focus on risk analysis, with emphasis on rational limit-state principles and safety. Full discussion of historical discoveries and modern advances – including Hans Island, Molikpak, and others – support up-to-date methods and models to make this an ideal resource for designers and researchers.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the ten most cited articles that have appeared in the journal Atmosphere-Ocean since 1995. These articles cover a wide range of topics in meteorology, climatology and oceanography. Modelling work is represented in five papers, covering global climate model development; a cumulus parameterization scheme for global climate models; development of a regional forecast modelling system and parameterization of peatland hydraulic processes for climate models. Data rehabilitation and compilation in order to support trend analysis work on comprehensive precipitation and temperature data sets is presented in four papers. Field studies are represented by a paper on the circumpolar lead system. While the modelling studies are global in their application and applicability, the data analysis and field study papers cover environments that are specifically, but not uniquely, Canadian. This book will be of interest to researchers, students and professionals in the various sub-fields of meteorology, oceanography and climate science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic seas. The requirement is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are known to exist offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social and human environment has to be understood and respected. This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.
