Book Synopsis The Cone Sisters of Baltimore by : Ellen B. Hirschland
Download or read book The Cone Sisters of Baltimore written by Ellen B. Hirschland and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2008-07-03 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were friends with Picasso and Matisse. They ran in the same circles as Gertrude and Leo Stein. They avidly purchased works by Manet, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat, and Degas at a time when other Americans didn't. They were two Victorian women from Baltimore buying avant-garde art in Paris, attending salons with friends, and building a collection that would initially puzzle and eventually awe the art world. Over a period of fifty years, sisters Caribel and Etta Cone amassed one of the most acclaimed collections of late-nineteenth and twentieth-century art in America. Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta were two halves of an idiosyncratic team who used the fortures of their German Jewish immigrant family to seek out works that imspired and pleased them, regardless of public opinion. This richly illustrated biography documents their lives from a unique perspective: that of their great-niece and their great-great-niece. Ellen B. Hirschland and her daughter Nancy Hirschland Ramage delve into Claribel's and Etta's world, following the sisters through letters and personal stories as they travel to meet the artists whose work would turn their adjoining apartments into a virtual museum. The sisters' experiences in Paris in the 1910s and 1920s provide an exceptional view of the bright artistic ferment in the city at that time. Only time would vindicate their keen vision and unwavering taste.

Book excerpt: For four and a half decades, Etta and Claribel Cone roamed artists' studios and art galleries in Europe, building one of the largest, most important art collections in the world. At one time, these two independently wealthy Jewish women from Baltimore received offers from virtually every prominent art museum in the world, all anxious to house their hitherto private assemblage of modern art. In 1949, they awarded all their holdings to the Baltimore Museum of Art. In 2002, that collection was valued at nearly $1 billion, making them two of the most philanthropic art collectors of our age.Yet, for complex reasons, the story of the Cone sisters has never been fully or accurately told.Mary Gabriel, an art-minded journalist and women's historian, has, at long last, brought the little-known sisters to life, and shone the spotlight on their remarkable achievements.

Book Synopsis The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815-1850 by : Mark Westgarth
Download or read book The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815-1850 written by Mark Westgarth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than the customary focus on the activities of individual collectors, The Emergence of the Antique and Curiosity Dealer in Britain 1815–1850: The Commodification of Historical Objects illuminates the less-studied roles played by dealers in the nineteenthcentury antique and curiosity markets. Set against the recent ‘art market turn’ in scholarly literature, this volume examines the role, activities, agency and influence of antique and curiosity dealers as they emerged in the opening decades of the nineteenth century. This study begins at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, when dealers began their wholesale importations of historical objects; it closes during the 1850s, after which the trade became increasingly specialised, reflecting the rise of historical museums such as the South Kensington Museum (V&A). Focusing on the archive of the early nineteenth-century London dealer John Coleman Isaac (c.1803–1887), as well as drawing on a wide range of other archival and contextual material, Mark Westgarth considers the emergence of the dealer in relation to a broad historical and cultural landscape. The emergence of the antique and curiosity dealer was part of the rapid economic, social, political and cultural change of early nineteenth-century Britain, centred around ideas of antiquarianism, the commercialisation of culture and a distinctive and evolving interest in historical objects. This book will be of interest to scholars in art history, histories of collecting, museum and heritage studies and nineteenth-century culture.
Book Synopsis Foundations of the Nazi Police State by : George C. Browder
Download or read book Foundations of the Nazi Police State written by George C. Browder and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2004-05-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The abbreviation "Nazi," the acronym "Gestapo," and the initials "SS" have become resonant elements of our vocabulary. Less known is "SD," and hardly anyone recognizes the combination "Sipo and SD." Although Sipo and SD formed the heart of the National Socialist police state, the phrase carries none of the ominous impact that it should. Although no single organization carries full responsibility for the evils of the Third Reich, the SS-police system was the executor of terrorism and "population policy" in the same way the military carried out the Reich's imperialistic aggression. Within the police state, even the concentration camps could not rival the impact of Sipo and SD. It was the source not only of the "desk murderers" who administered terror and genocide by assigning victims to the camps, but also of the police executives for identification and arrest, and of the command and staff for a major instrument of execution, the Einsatzgruppen. Foundations of the Nazi Police State offers the narrative and analysis of the external struggle that created Sipo and SD. This book is the author's preface to his discussion of the internal evolution of these organizations in Hitler's Enforcers: The Gestapo and the SS Security Service in the Nazi Revolution.

Book Synopsis Beautiful Loot by : Konstantin Akinsha
Download or read book Beautiful Loot written by Konstantin Akinsha and published by Random House (NY). This book was released on 1995 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In what has been called one of the most important pieces of investigative journalism ever undertaken in the art world, Konstantin Akinsha and Grigorii Kozlov tell the story of how the Russians stole millions of art objects from European museums and private collectors in the final days of World War II and hid them away for fifty years. The Nazi confiscation of art from Jewish families and occupied countries has been well documented, but the story of what happened to the art after the Nazis were defeated in 1945 was virtually unknown until recently." "Secret "trophy brigades" were established early in 1945, with specific instructions from Stalin to remove art from Germany and ship it back to the USSR on special trains. This operation began while the fighting was still going on and was conducted at a frenzied pace for several months. It was the most prodigious transport operation of artworks in the history of mankind. Trophies were being removed from Germany as late as 1948." "Works by such masters as Botticelli, El Greco, Goya, Delacroix, Picasso, Velazquez, Matisse, Renoir, Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, and Degas made their way to the Soviet Union." "It was not until the late 1980s, when the Soviet Union began to dissolve, that it was possible to piece together this story. Akinsha and Kozlov were instrumental in revealing it to the West and in forcing Russian authorities to acknowledge the existence of the secret depositories. The Hermitage exhibited its collection of previously hidden Impressionist paintings early in 1995, but the Russians have been adamant in their refusal to return the stolen things, and the fate of the trophy art continues to be hotly debated."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis European Textiles by : Christa C. Mayer-Thurman
Download or read book European Textiles written by Christa C. Mayer-Thurman and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2001 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume catalogues the more than 250 textiles and objects made of fabric that were part of Robert Lehman's bequest to the Metropolitan Museum in 1975. Many of these textiles were used as hangings, covers, or upholstery to embellish the Lehmans' elegant townhouse in Manhattan. They represent sixty-five years of assembling, owning, and living with historic fabrics on a day-to-day basis, and they document an American style of living and interior decoration that has largely disappeared. Among the highlights of the collection are two series of embroidered roundels from fifteenth-century Flanders that illustrate the lives of Saints Martin and Catherine of Alexandria; four large tapestries, including the Last Supper after Bernaert van Orley that is arguably the finest Renaissance tapestry in an American collection; and a number of ecclesiastical vestments and panels of magnificent silks and velvets in an array of techniques and styles that span six centuries. Comparative illustrations supplement the catalogue entries. Glossary, bibliography, and index. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
