The origin and evolution of highly collimated and highly energetic outflows from the nuclei of some galaxies remains, after over 30 years of intensive study, and enigmatic process. We still do not know how these jets are collimated, or what they contain beyond relativistic particles and magnetic fields, much less how they come to be in the first place. If we could unravel the mystery of their origins, then it is clear that new and significant constraints could also be placed on the origin and evolution of the "central engine," presumably a massive black hole, that creates them. This is turn would give rise to new constraints on the formation and evolution of the parent galaxies and their environment. The quest for insights into the nature of these objects has always been made difficult by the last of information conveyed by their simple power law radiation spectrum, and so much of the information gained must be inferential. However, the hope remains that by gaining an understanding of the interaction of these objects with their environment we may be able to deduce the key parameters of the jets themselves. This strategy of working from "the outside in" is showing increasing promise as higher resolution observations with increasing sensitivity are being made over increased coverage in wavelength, especially as these are cast against results from sophisticated theoretical calculations that include three-dimensional MHD simulations."--Publisher's website.

Most of the newly discovered objects - a majority of the catalog -are unidentified sources, with a clearly predominant Galactic population. Are all these radio-quiet pulsars, like Geminga, or is there a novel type of celestial object, awaiting identification? In spite of the limited angular resolution provided by EGRET and COMPTEL, there is still much to learn about unidentified ,-ray sources: correlation studies, multiwavelength observations and theoretical work can provide valuable clues, specially if these efforts are carried out in a coordinated manner. The aim of this workshop, held from October 9 to 11, 2000, at the Instituto N acional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica, at Tonantzintla, Mexico, was to gather experts on the subject, including observational as tronomers specialized in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, in an effort to address the question of the Nature of Galactic high-energy gamma-ray sources, both from the theoretical and observational perspec tive, and elaborate schemes for future identification studies which can make use of existing and forthcoming facilities.

The meeting began with review talks on magnetic phenomena near the solar photosphere, corona, and in stellar winds, since these nearby "laboratories", studied for many years, provide much of the prior knowl edge of magnetic effects in astrophysical plasmas. The Symposium contained presentations of considerable new work concerning the role of magnetic fields in accretion disks, bipolar outflows, and related magnetic phenomena in molecular clouds and star forming regions. Both observa tions and related theory of the large-scale magnetic fields in the Milky Way were covered, in addition to a session on the more general theme of magnetohydrodynamics of galactic magnetic fields. Dynamo mechanisms were discussed in considerable detail. It was apparent that recent observational data on polarized emission from external galaxies are now of sufficiently high quality that meaningful tests of large-scale field amplification, and of ideas on the origin of galactic magnetic fields, can be undertaken. Both new observations and numerical simulation work were described in the context of active galaxy nuclei, supernova remnants, radio source jets and extended lobes, and also in the environment of galaxy clusters. Recent large-scale computer simulations incorporating magnetic fields in star formation, radio source jets, and many other phenomena were presented, and much of this was very new.
