Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuity: The Presidential Address to the British Association for 1913 Another is to take refuge in rather vague forms of statement, and to shrink from closer examination of the puzzling and the obscure. Another is to deny the existence of any thing which makes no appeal to organs of sense, and no ready response to laboratory experiment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Association for the Advancement of Science, Toronto Meeting, 1897: The President's Address and the Sectional Addresses Aristotle declared that it is unbecoming to praise the gods. Observing his canon, I shall say nothing as to the wisdom and the justice of our Executive in sometimes selecting a pure mathematician to preside over this Section. I shall only appeal to your indulgence in accepting the opportunity they have thus given me of speaking more specially about my own subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuity: The Presidential Address to the British Association for 1913 Sir John Lubbock, first Baron Avebury, cultivated science in a spirit of pure enjoyment, treating it almost as one of the Arts; and he devoted social and political energy to the welfare of the multitude of his fellows less fortunately situated than himself. Through the untimely death of Sir George Darwin the world has lost a mathematical astronomer whose work on the Tides and allied phenomena is a monument of power and achievement. So recently as our visit to S. Africa he occupied the Presidential Chair. Within the last month I have heard of the premature death of John Milne, who was apparently at the height of his energy and usefulness. His enthusiasm and persevering work for Seismology has resulted in an international organisation centring round his personality. He has, I am told, left £1000 to help continue the work, and it behoves us to see that no sinews of war shall be lacking to assist survivors in organising and continuing the attack in this immensely important field of combined and co-operative research. Book Synopsis Popular Lectures and Addresses by : William Thomson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Thomson, Baron Kelvin (1824-1907), was educated at Glasgow and Cambridge. While only in his twenties, he was awarded the University of Glasgow's chair in natural philosophy, which he was to hold for over fifty years. He is best known through the Kelvin, the unit of measurement of temperature named after him in consequence of his development of an absolute scale of temperature. These volumes collect together Kelvin's lectures for a wider audience. In a convivial but never condescending style, he outlines a range of scientific subjects to audiences of his fellow scientists. The range of topics covered reflects Kelvin's broad interests and his stature as one of the most eminent of Victorian scientists. Volume 2 is mainly concerned with geology and was actually published last, in 1894. It includes additional lectures given between 1866 and 1893 that were not included in the other two volumes.
