Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extinct and Vanishing Mammals of the Western Hemisphere, Vol. 11: With the Marine Species of All the Oceans May 1, 1942, is likely to be a significant date in the history of conservation, for on that day the "Convention on Nature Protection and Wildlife Preservation in the American Republics" came into effect for the seven American countries, including the United States, that had deposited ratifications with the Pan American Union. Twelve other Republics have now signed the Treaty, and it is hoped that their ratifications are soon to follow. Publication of the present volume, devoted to the extinct and vanishing mammals of the New World, including certain marine mammals of all the oceans, is therefore particularly timely. Its author, Dr. Glover M. Allen, of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, who died on February 14, 1942, was one of the great naturalists of his day. His profound knowledge of mammals and birds was the result not only of a life-time study in museums but also of intimate observation of animals in their native habitats - in Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, and South America, as well as in many parts of his own country. The final preparation of this report was one of the last projects that Dr. Allen completed before his untimely death. We know that he thought of it as one might think of the clearing of a new trail into a virgin forest. It will, indeed, be the opening of the way to a wider understanding of the genuine need for international cooperation, if the vanishing wildlife of the Americas is to be preserved for the benefit of future generations. This volume is dedicated to Dr. Allen's friend Dr. John C.Phillips, founder and first chairman of the American Committee for International Wildlife Protection. It was largely due to Dr. Phillips's vision that in May 1936 a project for a comprehensive study of the recently extinct and vanishing mammals of the world was undertaken under the auspices of the American Committee. Information on this subject had never been assembled, and it was felt that such a report, if carefully prepared, would be invaluable to the work of the Committee in helping to determine those species of mammals most urgently in need of protection and, at the same time, to estimate factors that might have caused the extinction of species. Book excerpt: In The Empty Ocean, acclaimed author and artist Richard Ellis tells the story of our continued plunder of life in the sea and weighs the chances for its recovery. Through fascinating portraits of a wide array of creatures, he introduces us to the many forms of sea life that humans have fished, hunted, and collected over the centuries, from charismatic whales and dolphins to the lowly menhaden, from sea turtles to cod, tuna, and coral. Rich in history, anecdote, and surprising fact, Richard Ellis’s descriptions bring to life the natural history of the various species, the threats they face, and the losses they have suffered. Killing has occurred on a truly stunning scale, with extinction all too often the result, leaving a once-teeming ocean greatly depleted. But the author also finds instances of hope and resilience, of species that have begun to make remarkable comebacks when given the opportunity. Written with passion and grace, and illustrated with Richard Ellis’s own drawings, The Empty Ocean brings to a wide audience a compelling view of the damage we have caused to life in the sea and what we can do about it. Book excerpt: The Real Thing is the first official biography of Ian McTaggart Cowan (1910–2010), the “father of Canadian ecology.” Authorized by his family and with the research support and participation of the University of Victoria Libraries, Briony Penn provides an unprecedented and accessible window into the story of this remarkable naturalist. From his formative years roaming the mountains around Vancouver looking for venison to his last years finishing the voluminous and authoritative Birds of British Columbia, Cowan’s life provides a unique perspective on a century of environmental change—with a critical message for the future. As the head and founder of the first university-based wildlife department in Canada, Ian McTaggart Cowan revolutionized the way North Americans understood the natural world, and students flocked into his classrooms to hear his brilliant, entertaining lectures regarding the new science of ecology. His television programs in the 1950s and ’60s, Fur and Feathers, The Web of Life and The Living Sea, made him a household name around the world. He was also responsible for hiring a young David Suzuki, who followed in his nature-show-host footsteps. Illustrated throughout with colour and black-and-white photos from all aspects of Cowan’s life, The Real Thing takes the reader on an adventurous and inspirational journey through the heart of North American ecology, wilderness, landscape and wonder.
