Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External fixation is one of the most versatile treatment options for fracture repair in small animals. The advantages include enhancing both the mechanical and biologic environment for optimal fracture healing. Veterinary external fixation is evolving and there are now improved techniques, better instrumentation and a continuing reduction in the incidence of complications. General veterinary practitioners can master the techniques and equipment costs are low. This book offers a highly practical guide to the use of linear external fixators in small animal practice. Divided into two sections, the first section reviews essential knowledge and technical details that underpin the successful treatment of a clinical case. The second is a collection of case studies selected to show the range of fracture types and fixator systems available. Within each case there is discussion of treatment options and clinical decision-making. Follow-up radiographs then provide invaluable insight into the normal radiographic appearance of healing and healed fractures. The authors have put together an intensely practical book that will no doubt prove to be the perfect learning tool for the surgical resident and practising veterinarian. Key features: A unique approach ensures the book is both practical and easy to read Written to appeal to practising veterinarians world-wide Contains over three hundred high quality radiographs Structured for detailed study or quick reference

Book excerpt: This textbook emphasizes the fundamentals of bone fracture and its fixation, including advanced techniques of osteosynthesis in both small and large animals. Various fracture fixation techniques and devices have been described in simple language with the help of sketches and photographs. The chapter on the basic considerations in fracture fixation narrates bone structure and types, bone development and growth regulation, types of fracture and fracture healing, first aid and emergency treatment, selection of fracture fixation technique, anesthetic management, and fracture fixation implants and instruments. The book highlights principles of different external, internal, and external skeletal fixation techniques. It also presents various basic and advanced techniques used to manage specific fractures in different bones, separately for small and large animal patients. It also includes specific topics like fracture fixation in young, osteoporotic, and avian bones, open fracture management, bone grafts and scaffolds, and fracture fixation complications. Towards the end, the book elucidates miscellaneous but essential topics in veterinary orthopedics such as metabolic bone diseases, antebrachial bone deformities, joint luxations, arthritis, common tendon, and ligament injuries, bone tumors, and physiotherapy and rehabilitation of patients. This textbook is essential reading for veterinary students, practitioners, and researchers working in veterinary orthopedic surgery.

Book excerpt: This successful book, first published in 1980 and now in its fourth edition, provides an authoritative guide for busy practitioners trying to keep pace with current trends in small animal orthopaedic surgery. In this new edition Hamish Denny and Steven Butterworth have retained the same practical approach but have completely rewritten and updated the book to provide a comprehensive review of orthopaedic and spinal conditions in the dog and cat. The illustrations have also undergone a major overhaul and the many line drawings are now combined with photographs and radiographs to clarify diagnostic and surgical techniques. Although the size of the book has increased, its regional approach to problems still enables the reader to use it as a rapid reference guide. It will prove an invaluable source of information for veterinary practitioners diagnosing and treating orthopaedic and spinal problems, while postgraduate students taking further qualifications in orthopaedics will find a sound basis for their studies and further reading provided here.

Book excerpt: Small Animal Distal Limb Injuries provide the small and mixed animal practitioner with a definitive but practical, step-by-step guide to the management of soft tissue, orthopedic and athletic injuries of the distal limbs in dogs and cats. Includes specific coverage of injuries that occur from the carpal/tarsal areas to the digits of dogs and cats. All wounds and injuries are covered and all commonly performed management and bandaging techniques are presented as step-by-step black and white line drawings supplemented by before and after photographs. Regional anatomy is presented for orientation. The work is intended to consolidate, in a single volume, all of the applied clinical information needed for the effective management of distal limb injuries and their reconstruction. This book contains medical and surgical guide lines which are not currently available in the veterinary literature. It spans four important areas of small animal practice (wound healing, bandaging, orthopedic trauma and injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons) which are of general interest to every practitioner. It contains up to date information regarding applicable drugs and is heavily illustrated. All three authors are very well known to the veterinary community and active on the meeting circuit. Of great use to undergraduate veterinary students in the latter years of study and to postgraduate students, as well as all small animal and mixed animal practitioners, trainers and others involved with athletic or working dogs.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: External fixation is now being used widely to maintain fractures, osteo tomies, and arthrodeses in a desired position during consolidation. Whereas external fixation has been readily accepted in European countries, its use has weathered a rather stormy course in North America, especially in the treatment of fractures. Only recently has external fixation found its rightful place on this continent as well. Many different models are on the market today, and the practitioner is faced with a difficult decision in selecting a model. Should he buy a system where the fracture has to be reduced first, or should he work with a device permitting a reduction after insertion of the pins? To enable surgeons to study the different systems, to discuss their advantages and disadvantages, and to permit them to put their hands on these devices and inspect them personally, the Division of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Ottawa organized an applied basic science course in May 1981, External Fixation of Fractures. During this course, all major systems were pre sented to the participants. As happened during the course "Internal Fixation of Fractures" held two years ago, the rigidity of internal fixation was frequently and intensively debated. Whereas the rigidity of internal fixation cannot be altered during the course of healing, the rigidity of external fixation can be changed. In fact, with progression of union, rods of increasing elasticity can be used.
