However, research has addressed this question only recently. In this paper, I propose a model that describes how firms develop a capability to create and develop ventures through corporate venture capital, alliances, and acquisitions. The model is based on two longitudinal case studies of large corporations operating in the information and communication technology sector in Europe. At the core of this model are learning processes that enable the firm to build up an external corporate venturing capability, by utilizing learning strategies both within and outside venturing relationships. To build this new capability, firms engage in acquisitive learning. Critical to deepening the capability acquired is adaptation of all knowledge to the firm specific context through experiential learning mechanisms. I also discuss the important role that initial conditions and knowledge management practices play in determining the direction and effectiveness of specific learning processes that lead to an external corporate venturing capability.

Book excerpt: Corporate Entrepreneurship and Venturing is positioned at the crossroads of the strategy and entrepreneurship fields. The common theme is how and why corporate entrepreneurship and corporate venturing can contribute to innovation and strategic renewal in large established companies, in particular it explores ways to balance exploitation and exploration in established companies. The issue is how the locus of entrepreneurship affects the way corporate entrepreneurship addresses the exploitation/exploration challenge. In some chapters corporate entrepreneurship is dispersed across the organization and they examine the key elements of an entrepreneurial culture and the organizational conditions that are favorable to entrepreneurial initiatives. The other chapters contribute to the discussion on the potential role of corporate venturing which is separated from the main parts of the organization. They examine the advantages and disadvantages of corporate venture capital programs as particular forms of focused corporate entrepreneurship.

Book excerpt: Recently, the volume of research on external venturing and exploration has significantly increased. At the same time, William Ocasio's model of the attention-based view has been increasingly utilized when explaining organizational behavior. The intent of this thesis is to apply Ocasio's model to the context where a corporate parent makes a direct investment into an external venture in order to increase exploration. It is analyzed how attention regulators have to be composed in order to achieve a focus on radical innovation within the considered external venture. After a brief introduction into the fields of external venturing and the attention-based view, an own adaption of Ocasios model is introduced to directly address the specific context of the external venture direct investment. By using a literature analysis it is analyzed how the different attention regulators of the structural dimension affect attention channalization towards innovation within the external venture. In a last part this thesis proposes an adaption of the underlying model of the attention-based view building on the insights of the analysis of literature in order to fit the context of external ventures striving for innovation. The key insight of this thesis is that decision making is finally a top management's or decision maker's task and thus the attention regulator player is of special interest. It is most important to control the individual cognitive decision making process of a player. A rearrangement of the other attention regulators as well as a careful selection of the regarded decision maker regarding to traits is necessary to successfully channelize cognitive information processing.

Book excerpt: How do external venturing units effectively achieve external knowledge search and integration of their initiatives with mainstream organizational units? We investigate this largely unexplored question through an inductive study of 17 corporate venture capital units. We document a set of five novel practices that influence the efficacy of a unit's external search and internal integration, and identify how these practices complement a broader set of practices used by all units. We highlight the entrepreneurial nature of managing an external venturing unit, often to overcome unfavorable corporate contexts, a perspective that prior research has largely overlooked. Our findings provide unique insights into why some corporate investors are better at learning from external startups than others.

We compare different forms of external corporate venturing, namely corporate venture capital investments, alliances, joint ventures, and acquisitions, as alternative avenues for interorganizational learning. Furthermore, we test the effects of multiple relational characteristics on the type of learning outcomes. Our empirical analysis is based on citations in patents filed by a sample of 110 largest U.S. public information and communications technology companies during the years 1992-2000. We find that corporate venturing mode and technological relatedness have significant effects on the likelihood of explorative learning.

Book excerpt: All the talk about "open innovation" and externally-focused innovation assumes that "one size fits all" in terms of what network-centric innovation is and how companies should harness external creativity. But the reality is that there is no one right way to master this tool. For instance, loosely governed community-based innovation projects are a very different animal from tightly-orchestrated development projects driven by a large firm. As the landscape of network-centric innovation becomes more diverse and more confusing, there is a desperate need to structure the landscape to better understand different models for network-centric innovation. This book brings clarity to the confusion. Further, it argues that managers cannot rely on anecdotal success stories they read about in the press to implement a network-centric innovation strategy. They need rigorous and analytical advice on what role their company should play in an innovation network, what capabilities they need to create, and how they need to prepare their organization for this significant shift in the innovation approach. This book offers a practical and detailed roadmap for planning and implementing an externally-focused innovation strategy.

However, little research exists that would analyze whether there are systematic differences in learning outcomes across different governance modes. In this paper, we systematically analyze how the governance choice between different external corporate venturing modes (i.e. corporate venture capital investments, alliances, joint ventures and acquisitions) influences the learning outcomes from corporate venturing. Based on learning theory, we develop hypotheses predicting how the characteristics of these governance modes affect learning outcomes in the corporation.
