Maclaren was converted and publicly baptized at the age of twelve. He was educated at Glasgow High School and Glasgow University. In 1842, at the age of sixteen, Maclaren entered Stepney College, a Baptist institution in London. He took his BA degree at the University of London before he was twenty. The following year he began his ministry at Portland Chapel, Southampton. He worked there for twelve years and developed a reputation as a powerful preacher. He then accepted an invitation to become pastor at Union Chapel, Fallowfield, Manchester, where he remained until his retirement in 1903.

The other Gospels begin with Bethlehem; John begins with 'the bosom of the Father.' Luke dates his narrative by Roman emperors and Jewish high-priests; John dates his 'in the beginning.' To attempt adequate exposition of these verses in our narrow limits is absurd; we can only note the salient points of this, the profoundest page in the New Testament.

Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar known for his staunchly Calvinist and Puritan-like teachings. Though born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society (an occult gnostic group popular in England during that time), and quickly rose in prominence within their ranks. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was the verse, Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Therefore the Gospel ends with it. But it is also the starting-point of the Christ's heavenly activity, of which the growth of His Church, as recorded in the Acts, is the issue. Therefore the Book of the Acts of the Apostles begins with it. The keynote of the 'treatise' lies in the first words, which describe the Gospel as the record of what 'Jesus began to do and teach, ' Luke would have gone on to say that this second book of his contained the story of what Jesus went on to do and teach after He was 'taken up, ' if he had been strictly accurate, or had carried out his first intention, as shown by the mould of his introductory sentence; but he is swept on into the full stream of his narrative, and we have to infer the contrast between his two volumes from his statement of the contents of his first.
