Book excerpt: "In The Potter's Promise, Dr. Leighton Flowers reveals, by means of a refreshingly clear and persuasive writing style, the theological and philosophical arguments that compelled him to abandon his previously held Calvinistic convictions. While some Traditionalists have a tendency to avoid certain Bible verses, Dr. Flowers tackles them fearlessly, placing them in their proper context in a manner consistent with the entirety of God's Word. Calvinists have sometimes been known to object to Traditional writers and thinkers by making the claim, 'You just don't understand Calvinism.' Any such charge leveled against Dr. Flowers rings hollow. Having heard all the arguments Calvinism has to offer, he nevertheless disaffirms it. Every Calvinist needs to read this book to challenge their thinking and consider the other side. Every Traditionalist needs to read this book to become better equipped in defending their own view of salvation doctrine."--Dr. Rick Patrick, Executive Director of Connect 316 and Senior Pastor.

Book Synopsis Paul's Use of the Old Testament in Romans 9.1-9 by : Brian J. Abasciano
Download or read book Paul's Use of the Old Testament in Romans 9.1-9 written by Brian J. Abasciano and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-02-07 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation builds upon recent developments in the study of Paul's use of Scripture that center around the concept of "intertextuality." Abasciano uses an exegetical method that incorporates into a thorough traditional exegesis a comprehensive analysis of Paul's use of Scripture against the background of interpretive traditions surrounding the texts alluded to, with great emphasis placed on analyzing the original contexts of Paul's citations and allusions. Such an intertextual exegesis is conducted in Romans 9:1-9 with an awareness of the broader unit of chapters 9-11 especially, and also the epistle as a whole. The study finds that many of the themes Paul deals with in Romans 9-11 are also present in ancient Jewish and Christian interpretive traditions surrounding the passages he invokes, and more importantly, that Paul's scriptural quotations and allusions function as pointers to their broad original contexts, from which he developed much of the form, content, and direction of his argument, holding significance for a number of exegetical details as well as broader themes and rhetorical movements. The final chapter seeks to draw conclusions concerning the significance of Paul's use of the Old Testament in Romans 9:1-9 for the exegesis and theology of Romans and for Pauline intertextuality. The identity of the true people of God is central to Romans 9-11 and the epistle. And Paul's use of Scripture is contextual and referential, calling for attention to Pauline intertextuality in standard exegetical procedure. JSNTS 301

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The doctrine of predestination is an important starting point for the study of Christian theology thought from a Reformed theological perspective. This doctrine is essential because it is one of the central themes from the Bible that has been the reason for many debates among many theologians in the history of the church. Despite the different views held by mainline Protestant theologians like Martin Luther, John Calvin, and Jacobus Arminus, this book points to Scripture as the basis for Reformed soteriology. It uses the tools of biblical interpretation to show how the entire Bible addresses the doctrine of predestination so that theology students, pastors, Bible teachers, and anyone interested in Christian theology will better understand predestination from a Reformed perspective toward an effective ministry today.
