Book excerpt: Meet Johnny Anonymous. No, that’s not his real name. But he is a real, honest-to-goodness pro football player. A member of the League. A slave, if you will, to the NFL. For the millions of you out there who wouldn’t know what to do on Sundays if there wasn’t football, who can’t imagine life without the crunch of helmets ringing in your ears, or who look forward to the Super Bowl more than your birthday, Johnny Anonymous decided to tell his story. Written during the 2014–2015 season, this is a year in the life of the National Football League. This is a year in the life of a player—not a marquee name, but a guy on the roster—gutting it out through training camp up to the end of the season, wondering every minute if he’s going to get playing time or get cut. Do you want to know how players destroy their bodies and their colons to make weight? Do you wonder what kind of class and racial divides really exist in NFL locker rooms? Do you want to know what NFL players and teams really think about gay athletes or how the League is really dealing with crime and violence against women by its own players? Do you wonder about the psychological warfare between players and coaches on and off the field? About how much time players spend on Tinder or sexting when not on the field? About how star players degrade or humiliate second- and third-string players? What players do about the headaches and memory loss that appear after every single game? This book will tell you all of this and so much more. Johnny Anonymous holds nothing back in this whip-smart commentary that only an insider, and a current player, could bring. Part truth-telling personal narrative, part darkly funny exposé, NFL Confidential gives football fans a look into a world they’d give anything to see, and nonfans a wild ride through the strange, quirky, and sometimes disturbing realities of America’s favorite game. Here is a truly unaffiliated look at the business, guts, and glory of the game, all from the perspective of an underdog who surprises everyone—especially himself. JOHNNY ANONYMOUS is a four-year offensive lineman for the NFL. Under another pseudonym, he’s also a contributor for the comedy powerhouse Funny Or Die. You can pretty much break NFL players down into three categories. Twenty percent do it because they’re true believers. They’re smart enough to do something else if they wanted, and the money is nice and all, but really they just love football. They love it, they live it, they believe in it, it’s their creed. They would be nothing without it. Hell, they’d probably pay the League to play if they had to! These guys are obviously psychotic. Thirty percent of them do it just for the money. So they could do something else—sales, desk jockey, accountant, whatever—but they play football because the money is just so damn good. And it is good. And last of all, 49.99 percent play football because, frankly, it’s the only thing they know how to do. Even if they wanted to do something “normal,” they couldn’t. All they’ve ever done in their lives is play football—it was their way out, either of the hood or the deep woods country. They need football. If football didn’t exist, they’d be homeless, in a gang, or maybe in prison. Then there’s me. I’m part of my own little weird minority, that final 0.01 percent. We’re such a minority, we don’t even count as a category. We’re the professional football players who flat-out hate professional football.

This is the perfect job for a woman who exists in the background. Can Mary prove herself, or will this assignment be her last?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three dirty true confessions have been carefully selected for your entertainment. This book is dirty. Only by sharing the nitty-gritty, lurid details of a sex life gone awry can you ever hope to help another human suffering with a similar situation. As "Jessica M" from The Debutant's Fall writes, "Sometimes something good can come of even the most outrageous experience." These people are looking for redemption, freedom. They want to unburden themselves. Share their shame, their humiliation. They need to expose themselves to you. This book is true. Or at least as true as I can legally make it. Know, dear reader, that I have changed the names of all the people who have trusted me with their sexual confessions--these three scintillating tales of sexual degradation. I have also changed particular identifying details--like the names of cities, schools, and even the names of certain web sites--so that it's harder for the curious reader to match the stories in these pages to the real life people who have shared their torrid secrets. As the editor, I claim the right to title all the stories. There is a good reason for this. I am sure Jessica M. wouldn't have selected, The Debutante's Fall, as the title for her story. But once you read it, you will realize no other title will do. While it's titillating to read about how she prostituted herself with a black man in her sophomore year of college, the remarkable thing about Jessica's story is that she might as well still be prostituting herself today, as the wife of rising Fortune 500 executive. Or consider Brad W., an undergraduate student who took advantage of his friend when she had too much to drink in the story, He Sends His Regrets. Even if Brad was never convicted by a court, he has been condemned by his own mind. You will be shocked at the dirty things his own guilt drives him to do. Of course, he sends his regrets. What else could he send? And finally there is Milton Pearl who writes that he has nothing to confess in the story, The Price of Fame. Don't you believe him. Someone is responsible for his eighteen-year-old daughter's indoctrination into the porn entertainment industry. Milton may not have held the camera, but he held something in his hand as he enjoyed the fruit that industry has to offer, and that sort of willful indulgence makes him just as culpable of his daughter's career choice as if he were her producer. The people who wrote these stories are deviates. Philanders. They are devils and scallywags. You must read between the lines to come to your own conclusions about the truth of what they reveal. This book is better than an episode of the trashiest television talk show. This book was created in the spirit of The Phil Donahue Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Geraldo, and of course The Jerry Springer Show. While it's true that confession is good for the soul, it's even better for the libido. Huck Pilgrim

Book excerpt: The memoir of a high-functioning, law-abiding (well, mostly) sociopath and a roadmap—right from the source—for dealing with the sociopath in your life. “[A] gripping and important book . . . revelatory . . . quite the memorable roller coaster ride.”—The New York Times Book Review As M.E. Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, “We are your neighbors, your coworkers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent—even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence. Who are we? We are highly successful, noncriminal sociopaths and we comprise 4 percent of the American population.” Confessions of a Sociopath—part confessional memoir, part primer for the curious—takes readers on a journey into the mind of a sociopath, revealing what makes them tick while debunking myths about sociopathy and offering a road map for dealing with the sociopaths in your life. M. E. Thomas draws from her own experiences as a diagnosed sociopath; her popular blog, Sociopathworld; and scientific literature to unveil for the very first time these men and women who are “hiding in plain sight.”

Book excerpt: Why do people confess to crimes they did not commit? And, surely, those cases must be rare? In fact, it happens all the time—in police stations, workplaces, public schools, and the military. Psychologist Saul Kassin, the world’s leading expert on false confessions, explains how interrogators trick innocent people into confessing, and then how the criminal justice system deludes us into believing these confessions. Duped reveals how innocent men, women, and children, intensely stressed and befuddled by lawful weapons of psychological interrogation, are induced into confession, no matter how horrific the crime. By featuring riveting case studies, highly original research, work by the Innocence Project, and quotes from real-life exonerees, Kassin tells the story of how false confessions happen, and how they corrupt forensics, witnesses, and other evidence, force guilty pleas, and follow defendants for their entire lives— even after they are exonerated by DNA. Starting in the 1980’s, Dr. Kassin pioneered the scientific study of interrogations and confessions. Since then, he has been on the forefront of research and advocacy for those wrongfully convicted by police-induced false confessions. Examining famous cases like the Central Park jogger case and Amanda Knox case, as well as stories of ordinary innocent people trapped into confession, Dr. Kassin exposes just how widespread this problem is. Concluding with actionable solutions and proposals for legislative reform, Duped shows why the stigma of confession persists and how we can reform the criminal justice system to make it stop.

For many years this author had maintained the attitude that the multifarious erotic experiences that are the subject of this book ought to remain in the minds of the participants, to be reawakened, revisited and enjoyed only by them. This instinctive assessment gradually morphed into a realization that there lies no shame in sharing one's sexual adventures with whoever cares to visit them and / or vicariously participate. The abiding caveat being, of course, to scrupulously maintain the privacy of the individuals who unwittingly share this largesse allowing for the enjoyment of countless third party participants. This book then is dedicated to those who venture to enjoy the erotic journeys of the senses. Are there those that do not ?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Male Confessions examines how men open their intimate lives and thoughts to the public through confessional writing. This book examines writings—by St. Augustine, a Jewish ghetto policeman, an imprisoned Nazi perpetrator, and a gay American theologian—that reflect sincere attempts at introspective and retrospective self-investigation, often triggered by some wounding or rupture and followed by a transformative experience. Krondorfer takes seriously the vulnerability exposed in male self-disclosure while offering a critique of the religious and gendered rhetoric employed in such discourse. The religious imagination, he argues, allows men to talk about their intimate, flawed, and sinful selves without having to condemn themselves or to fear self-erasure. Herein lies the greatest promise of these confessions: by baring their souls to judgment, these writers may also transcend their self-imprisonment.
