By 1962, traditional exports constituted agricultural products and unprocessed minerals with coffee accounting for approximately 51 percent of the foreign exchange earnings. This study sought to identify the plausible determinants of export growth in Uganda following a series of contradictions on the subject.Export growth rate was regressed on Gross Domestic Product, Terms of Trade, foreign price level, Real exchange rate and Foreign Direct Investment and findings revealed that Terms of Trade and foreign price level significantly affect Export growth. It is recommended that the motive of Foreign Direct Investment be changed from capturing the domestic market to production for export. There is need to diversify exports preferably to include manufactured goods but emphasis should be put on utilizing the newly discovered oil which if exported would attract higher prices than the current blend of exports. This work provides literature on what drives export growth in developing countries and also the role of foreign direct investment in determining export structu

This is because favourable firm performance as a business activity is important not only to the export company but also the national economy. At firm level, good performance brings about company growth through profit re-investment and development of company's facilities and resources. At industry and national economy level, it results in innovation and quality development, government revenue through taxes, employment, and infrastructural developments among others. All these consequently improve livelihood, standard of living of the citizen and economic development in a country. For these reasons, practitioners and academics remain interested in issues of acceptable level of FEP. Practitioners strive to achieve firm export objectives especially objectives of profitability and growth; and academics want to explain the factors and other issues underlying FEP. The available literature indicates that it is not clear what determines acceptable level of FEP. The literature further indicates that knowledge on FEP is fragmented, contradictory, and full of controversies, lacking consensus and the theory on FEP is still at infancy stage of development. Export corporations are reportedly facing challenges in operationalising their export objectives, leading to continued poor performance. Therefore the objective of this study is to examine the literature to identify the determinants of FEP in the context of Uganda, and then to propose a model to gain insight into the dynamics in order to generate new understanding and explanation of FEP. Examination of literature identified export market orientation, export market environment, and organisational learning as independent variables. In addition, export market information system, export market strategy, and organisational innovations capability were also identified as mediators. Quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from 250 firms in some industries in the export sector. Psychometric analyses covering reliability, exploratory, confirmatory, and validities analyses were performed. Finally, structural equation modelling was used to validate and analyse the hypothesised relationships in the study. The results indicate that the independent variables indirectly relate to FEP. This implies that an export development or promotion corporation needs to invest in implementation and practice of these variables. The key variable that have been empirically identified as determining FEP include export market orientation, export market environment and organisational learning as independent variables; and export market information system, export market strategy and organisational innovations capability as mediating variables. Appropriate implementation and practice of these variables would create competitive edge hence in export firms, hence, improving FEP. This would consequently enable the firms to realise their export objectives, and other economic benefits due to good export performance. In conclusion, from the perspective of Uganda, good FEP is determined by export market orientation, export market environment and organisational learning. These determinants yield better influence through export market information system, export market strategy and organisational innovations capability as mediators.

Book excerpt: "Pursuit of an exchange rate policy that promotes the competitiveness of exports would be greatly facilitated if the policy maker were able to establish the level of misalignment of the exchange rate and thereby try to correct for it. The motivation of this study for Uganda was therefore to derive the equilibrium exchange rate path, determine the levels of misalignment of the exchange rate and assess their impact on the performance of nontraditional exports. Estimating the equilibrium real exchange rate (ERER) involved: (a) estimation of the real effective exchange rate (REER) by the cointegration and the error correction mechanism (ECM) approaches, (b) filtering transitory factors from the "fundamentals" using the Hodrick-Prescott filter approach and the Elbadawi moving average (MA) methodology, and (c) estimating the ERER using the permanent components of the fundamentals. We find that the magnitude of misalignment, derived as the deviation of REER from ERER, greatly reduced during the period 1991-1999, when the exchange and payments system was liberalized as part of the overall improved macroeconomic management. Further, given that over-valuation of the exchange rate in excess of 15% hampers non-traditional export performance, our results suggest that the exchange rate policy should aim at minimizing over-valuation and, in fact, albeit the inflation objective, over-depreciate REER to boost non-traditional export competitiveness. An explicit estimate of the equilibrium exchange rate is therefore an important variable in exchange rate policy and export competitiveness debates"--African Economic Research Consortium web site.

Most existing analyses see the sector's problems as quality deterioration, poor marketing position in the global market, weak regulatory framework, and poor infrastructure. Recommendations range from setting up a coffee auction to increasing the share of specialty coffees. This paper concludes that such advice has been largely inconsistent with the stylized facts of the Ugandan coffee industry. It argues that the coffee wilt disease and the effectiveness of the coffee replanting program are the two key issues on which policymakers and the donor community should focus their activities and allocate their resources.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, , language: English, abstract: This paper assesses the patterns of export product diversification and identifies its determinants in four east African countries particularly focus on the case of Ethiopia. In addition to this, the study develops lessons from East Asian countries as best experience to know the way they have followed to achieve export product diversification with less than three decades. The research conducts Herfindahl-Hirschman index to see the degree of export product diversification, balanced panel data to examine determinants of export product diversification using GLS random effect model and descriptive statistics for the year 1995-2014. The statistical data collected from WDI, UNCTAD, ERCA, NBE and ADI data bases. The study also conducts Huasman specification test to select the best model for the study and Breusch-Peagan test to check the existence of heteroscedasticity and used one year lag-values in log form to detect the endogeneity problems and some of the variables like labor force and saving effect may not observed immediately on diversification. According to the finding, the HHI for east African countries export product diversification shows as they concentrated on few products. However it shows an improvements from year to year with gradual changes. In 1995-2014 Ethiopia, Rwanda and Ugandan export highly concentrated but since 2001 Ethiopia and Uganda export performance shows moderately improved compare to the previous years. The regression result of the study suggests that exchange rate, gross domestic saving, inflation, PGDP, openness to trade, labor force and foreign direct investment suggests as they have positive contribution to export diversification. Likely, the regression result of labor force showing the highest relatively compare to other explanatory variables. [...]

Book excerpt: Driven by increased demand from both local and export markets and facilitated by far-reaching liberalization and privatization policies, the dairy sub-sector in Uganda has undergone significant changes in the last decade. With a comparative advantage in milk production, the southwest of Uganda has started to attract considerable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in processing capacity, mainly targeting the export market. As a result, processing capacity increased five-fold and dairy became Uganda's third most important export product, coming from negligible amounts a decade earlier. In this study, we use observational data collected at different nodes within the value chain to compare the structure of the chain and the roles and economic activities of different actors between export-led value chains and value chains that cater for the local market. Doing so allows us to identify the technological and institutional innovations that both result from the emergence of export-led dairy value chains and at the same time drive further upgrading. Our analysis underscores the importance of milk collection centers, which often take the form of farmer cooperatives, in providing many of the sup- port services that enable other actors in the value chain to produce sufficient milk, and maintain milk sanitation levels necessary for an export sector to emerge.

It also discusses how these institutional investors transit shocks to the rest of the financial sector and economy. The crisis has re-ignited the policy debate on key issues such as: 1) the need for countercyclical funding and solvency rules; 2) the tradeoffs implied in marked based valuation rules; 3) the need to protect contributors towards retirement from excessive market volatility; 4) the need to strengthen group supervision for large complex financial institutions including insurance and pensions; and 5) the need to revisit the resolution and crisis management framework for insurance and pensions.
